If its shifting and engageing the gears it sounds like its fine,There is no snap on tool to adjust the cables for the BM, therefor if you play around with it MAKE sure you mark it.

Suggestion

I would suggest running through the gears after you reclip your cables to make sure it goes through the gears smoothly, if it doesn't, adjust.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I installed mine last night and everything went smoothly, but when I snapped the shift rods back in I was unsure on the adjustment. You can move the shifter fore and aft which would effect where the rod falls in the carrier. I just tried to place the shifter near center and had the rod in nuetral and then snapped it in. If you have done this mod, you should know what I am talking about. I took the car out for a test drive and all gears engaged fine, but I was not going through them quickly at high power. My concern is that it seems you could place the rod in slightly off and have the shifter engaging fully in 1-3 and 5 and only part way in 2-4 and 6 or vise versa. This may cause you to pop out of gear on the partially engaged ratios or cause undue wear. I hope that this all makes sense to someone and they can tell me how to ensure that rod placement in the carrier is correct. The directions just show putting the rod back in, but there is definately an adjustment aspect to that. Any help would be appeciated. Thanks, Pat

POST 2Original post

If its shifting and engageing the gears it sounds like its fine,There is no snap on tool to adjust the cables for the BM, therefor if you play around with it MAKE sure you mark it. It sounds like its fine, I dont think the amount your talking about is going to throw it off.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know that I have read that on this forum, but last night I was reading the B & M instructions and I do not think that it said anything about marking the shaft. Anyway, now that I have forgotten that step, is there any way to make sure that I have it put back together right? As I said, it goes through all of the gears smoothly now, but I have not exposed it to any hard shifting under power like you would do at a track event. I just want to ensure that I do not have ite slightly off and cause undue wear that might result in large problems down the line. I appreciate any help anyone can give. Also, I do not need any "you should have marked them" comments. I know! I screwed up...where do I go from here? Thanks, Pat

POST 4Original post

I just installed the schnell SS today and I know exactly what you are talking about. During replacement I noticed that even though I placed the cables in the same spot the metal shifter was making contact with the plastic holder in 1,3,5. gears were engaging but just barely. I then adjusted the cables so that the gears engaged without contact. I would suggest running through the gears after you reclip your cables to make sure it goes through the gears smoothly, if it doesn't, adjust. SS is still the best bang for the buck as far as mods go. I was skeptical about the schnell but after putting some mles on today it is noticeably smoother than the B&M I had in my 986, and was only $150.

POST 5Original post

Don't worry! You did not need to mark them. Trully if it is going through the gears smoothly you did it right. You would know if it was off. Relax and have fun with the shorter throws!
