If and when I get 18s, I will be running 235s and 285s (as opposed to 225s and 285s) to try and address the understeer issues a bit, as well as trying to get a little more negative camber in front.

I'd run the 285/30 as it's "designed" to be on there.

However, also in this TSB it says "The wing seam and if necessary the rear spoiler must be reworked on vehicles up to and mincluding MY 2001 if running 285/30 tires.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Getting ready to change back over to Summer tires. I am installing 18s for the first time on a 01 996C2, have been using 17" previously.
I am leaning towards Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s, but not sure which tire size to go with. I am looking for a smoother ride, car is a daily driver (no track use).
Option 1: 225/40R18 and 265/35R18
or
Option 2: 225/40R18 and 285/30R18
I am thinking the 265/35 would be smoother?
Thanks!
not trying to jack your thread, but i have '99 996 w/18" turbo look wheels (7.5 " front, 10" rears) and have also been interested in going w/a 225/40 front set-up and a 285/30 rear. i have heard that w/this set-up, the front wheels should be 8" wide for greater stability. is this true? any feedback appreciated as i may be tracking my 996 this year and don't want to find out the hard way.
To vrusso:
You must have a boxster front wheel as all the 911 fronts in 18" were 8" wide.
With a 7.5" front you're going to be limited in the width of tire you can run, already the 911 understeers quite a bit in stock form. I think you're wasting your time with a 7.5" rim and should invest in getting the correct rims and tires for the car.
If and when I get 18s, I will be running 235s and 285s (as opposed to 225s and 285s) to try and address the understeer issues a bit, as well as trying to get a little more negative camber in front.
To the original poster, while technically the 265 has a little bit more sidewall and technically will be a little bit more forgiving, the difference between a 35 and 30 series sidewall is pretty small, while 265 on a 10" wide rim is a bit narrow. Nothing too narrow to be dangerous mind you, but not really optimal. I'd run the 285/30 as it's "designed" to be on there.
lowside67,
thx for your reply, but the 18" oem turbo look wheels i spoke of were original options for the car - they came from the factory w/7.5" fronts and are not boxster rims. i love the carrera 5 spoke wheels but haven't had any luck finding a reasonable set. anyone out there with a set?
hi vrusso. I'm not going to presume to insult your intelligence, but I know for absolute fact that the 18" turbo twists are 8" in the front! Have you got the part # from your front wheel so we can figure out exactly what/where they are?

According to the TSB #4440 (8/10/04) there were 7.5 and 8" versions of many wheels.
However, also in this TSB it says "The wing seam and if necessary the rear spoiler must be reworked on vehicles up to and mincluding MY 2001 if running 285/30 tires. Does anyone know what this means??
Those rims are super easy to clean. One of the best designs!! My rims are the real thing though, I don't know what the disadvantages of replicas are if any?
