Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After having recent oil and filter changed at my local indy I took a spirited drive then garaged my 996. Over the weekend I backed the car out of the garage to wash it, but noticed that about 3-4 tablespoons of motor oil had leaked onto the garage floor near the left rear tire. I drove the 996 and everything looked and sounded normal. The oil pressure was between 4-5 bars and temperature was normal. I cleaned up the oil, garaged the car and today there is no oil on the garage floor. I'll return to the indy for a look underneath, so in the meantime what's your opinion as to what might have happened? TYVM! /X3

POST 4Original post

Factory cannister/cartridge setup? O-ring in the wrong groove? It's happened before.

POST 5Original post

Left rear? As in near the oil filter itself or the other side of the engine? If left rear might be AOS or AOS hose to bank 1-3, if right maybe residual from the change.

POST 8Original post

Was the oil real stinky? Are your exhaust tips level and in the proper position? It could be a leaky motor mount. But unlikely.

POST 9Original post

Or a leaking cam cover plug. Was it over filled?

POST 10Original post

If you've got a cab, check the hydraulic cylinder on the left side. When it leaks, it dumps hydraulic fluid in front of the rear tire. If the oil you saw was super clean, that might be it.

Fresh oil. /X3

Take it back to who did the oil change. Most likely leaking at the drain plug gasket or the oil filter housing.

For the future.....The drain plug gasket should be replaced EVERY oil change. You may want to stress this if you go to the same garage again.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 16157244

If you're talking crush washer, how did they remedy with out draining oil?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 16157307

You can pull the plug and quickly change it without to much of a mess (maybe 1/3 qt loss) I had the same issue, one more ft pound and no more drip. Turns out my torque wrench is not accurate.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 16157307

Either catch the oil in a clean container for re using or pull plug, insert finger, replace crush washer, reinstall drain plug, torque to spec, top off with fresh fluid. Just my guess

You must have cat like quickness, and three hands.😎

Pull the plug and stick a finger in the hole. Replace washer with the other hand and quickly reverse your actions...I've only had to do this once and it turned out better (less messy) than I expected. I can see how this could easily take a hard left turn though

Not really, prepare yourself and plan for the worst/hope for the best.

POST 25Original post

I had to do the same thing when I was a little overfilled. You need to be quick or have a large clean container. The hardest part is getting the plug initially seated while the oil is still pouting out. Totally doable
