Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

As others have mentioned, never assume something as critical as the IMS was replaced without clear documentation.
Leading evidence: 'Replace without clear documentation' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check $15k' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You could walk in with a check for $15k after doing the above and see what he says.

Suggestion
It's worth every bit of $16,500.00 ($3k IMSB change...or $5k if you do the Solution)...

Suggestion
If it isn't leaking from the rear main seal/IMS area I would just change the oil regularly, monitor and do the IMS when you need a clutch.

There's no one right answer to you questions but this, if the IMSB was not noted as replaced then consider it was not.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Cliff notes:
2002 Carerra 2 with basic options, with 65K miles, asking $20k.
Interior is a 8-9 I'd say, exterior is more like a 7. Could really use some
touch-up paint
.
Carfax: No damage history, extensive and maintenance/service history at a certified porsche garage.
IMS: Unclear if it has been done. Entire transmission was removed and reinstalled in Jan 2005 @ 16k miles so stands to reason that they may well have done it then.
Love the color, seller is a small business type guy who is super reasonable. Brand new tires, and according to him, his porsche mechanic looked at it and gave him a list of a few small things, most of which he has addressed including the aforementioned new tires and some fluids. I've driven it twice and it drives phenomenally well. All the gadgets work, and I am pretty much in love with the type.
Am thinking I will buy it and drive it like it's intended and do the IMS when I feel like it or if the time comes for a new clutch, or maybe never if the car is functioning well and the oil looks OK.
1. With that in mind, is this a reasonable deal?
2. Am I being ridiculous for putting any value in the fact that the transmission was removed/reinstalled, and using that as to think the IMS may have been addressed?
3. Is there any such thing as being "out of the woods" with regards to the IMS not failing henceforth if the mileage is at 65k now?
There's no one right answer to you questions but this, if the IMSB was not noted as replaced then consider it was not. Also, if it had been done, it's recommended service life has long past unless the IMS Solution was used.
IMSB's don't care when they fail, could be 66K miles or 166k miles, or maybe never...Only you can decide what's the best course to take.
Looks like something I would consider looking at. But I'm sure the experts will check in and call it junk.
I would not assume the IMSB was replaced at 16k. There really shouldn't be anything other than a leaking RMS (or paranoia about the IMSB) to warrant dropping the transmission so early. If you have that much information, it would stand to reason there would be notes on
why
.
Please keep us informed as you proceed. Good luck.
Sounds like a great deal. If it isn't leaking from the rear main seal/IMS area I would just change the oil regularly, monitor and do the IMS when you need a clutch.
Have you really researched these cars yet?
I noticed you're really focused on the IMSB. That's just one of the many problems these engines have. You will never be "out of the woods" with these engines unless you have the engine rebuilt properly from the ground up. I see many people spending several thousands of dollars on the IMSB. Sinking even more money into an engine with many other potential causes of engine failure unresolved.
I highly recommend you research more before buying. These cars are not for everyone. There's a thread still on the first page of the forum right now where an owner owned it less than a year, paid $22k for it, another $10k in repairs, still had issues, and traded it in.
Lots of people are intrigued by these cars' low values. They are low for a reason.
It's a $35k car no matter what you pay for it and can get much more expensive at a moments notice. Proceed with caution!
Good luck!
It doesn't look like a bad deal to me. Little things can be fixed and it looks like it's been fairly well documented. I would just assume the IMS needs to be done if it wasn't in the last six years and budget for that. If everything else ticks the boxes it seems reasonable.
It sounds like you're ready to pull the trigger...
Have you taken it yourself to obtain an idependent PPI? Get a good look at it while it's in the air. Did you look at the coolant? Oil filler neck? As others have mentioned, never assume something as critical as the IMS was replaced without clear documentation.
I'm not aware of any engine that becomes worry-free after reaching a certain number of miles. Anything mechanical/electrical can fail at any time. That's not to be pessimistic, but just realistic.
You could walk in with a check for $15k after doing the above and see what he says. Overall, it looks to be in good shape from the pictures.
Seems pretty fair. I would want to be around high 18’s and reason with the guy about the bearing. Seems like an honest car. A lot depends on your location. In California if you are patient you can find some crazy deals. I don’t know what it’s like deal hunting in other parts of the country. Can’t be better for the most part
Check to see if the option white sticker is on hood. , you will see what it came with. Maybe a limited slip rear or if no sticker could have have hood replaced. Looks like a nice clean car ,but it doesn’t have a full leather interior like they are saying or calling a leather interior. Good luck. They made a lot of them and you can get a more loaded car for same price
PPI today. There was a drop of oil on the RMS. We have found an agreeable price. Will plan to do IMS/RMS and a bunch of other preventative maintenance early in my ownership of this fine, fine automobile/bomb.
