Turned out that one of the seals had blown out of the steering rack - seems like it was due to the tech cranking the front wheels when parking my car...

Suggestion
You can do the obvious things like check for fluid levels, cavitation in the pump, and rack damage, but if it is only at full lock, it may not be an issue.
Leading evidence: 'tech cranking the front wheels' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'tech cranking the front wheels' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fluid levels, cavitation in the pump, and rack damage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Cost me $1100 for the privilege of having them replace my steering rack (and f'up my alignment...) after breaking it.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello, new to forum. 2001 996 base Cab: Experiencing loud sound and vibration only during left full wheel lock and when the car is in motion. Before posting I searched and found similar threads on this, but the noise is described differently than what Im experiencing. I made a short video (link below), and the sound can be heard fairly clearly, but its much louder in person. Im not very mechanically inclined, so may not be able to answer too many additional questions, but a friend got it on a lift and said he could recreate the sound when going to a left full lock. It doesnt happen when the car is on the ground and not moving and in full lock. It seems to be getting worse. Power steering fluid fine. Also should add that when stationary and when I turn the steering wheel to either side, I do get that sort of clicking noise Ive read about in other posts. Unsure if its related or not.
Id be grateful for the expertise from more experienced members who might be able to venture a guess of what it might be. All feedback appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like your power steering being very unhappy to be held at full lock. Solution: stop driving in circles in parking lots with your steering wheel pegged at full lock.
Obviously it was done to recreate the sound for purposes of the video. Sounds like your feedback is unhelpful and offers no insight or feedback, other than to be insulting.
Solution: consider not saying such stupid things so thinking members who want to help have a chance to do so.
Somethings probably going on your steering rack. Before you go down that road, get someone to renew your power steering fluid and make sure it's bled properly. That noise could be from air in the lines.
Also, to CDR's defense, a lot of cars make odd noises when you keep the wheel at full lock.
Man to Dr.: Dr. , it hurts when I bang my head against the wall...
Dr. to Man: Sir, stop banging your head against the wall...
I think your best bet on Forums such as this one (especially this one) is to just ignore advice you don't find helpful...
As I recall, none of my cars likes being held hard against the full lock stops, some like it less than others. My comment and advice above was dead serious. If you experience the sound in normal driving, then I'd be concerned, If you only hear it at full lock, stop holding the car at full lock. You can do the obvious things like check for fluid levels, cavitation in the pump, and rack damage, but if it is only at full lock, it may not be an issue. Seriously.
^^^ I brought my car to the local Porsche dealer for a NYS safety inspection. upon finishing the inspection I was told my car was finished, and I could get it in the front lot (the service dept. is in the back) after paying the $37 bill... Oh cool i thought and gladly paid the bill. When I got to my car, I noticed a growing puddle of green oily fluid emanating from under the front left corner of the car. I abruptly turned around and went back to the service manager and asked him to come look at my car. Turned out that one of the seals had blown out of the steering rack - seems like it was due to the tech cranking the front wheels when parking my car... $3500 for a new unit - uh, no thanks...$900 + "cost labor" for a re-built/re-sealed... Cost me $1100 for the privilege of having them replace my steering rack (and f'up my alignment...) after breaking it.
Don't hold the wheels at full lock
All good and thanks. Sorry for the strong response. Yes , definitely do not hold it in a full lock, but there are occasions where its unavoidable sometimes because of my parking situation. Even though its just momentary Ive noticed it getting worse each time.
The internet is a hard place for people who are direct and to the point. Almost as hard as real life.
I have always held that no car "likes" being at full lock, and try to avoid it where possible.
I think everyone is in agreement that maintaining a full wheel-lock is not recommended. That said, it happens sometimes and when it does the car should not produce a sound resembling a moose in heat.
Im checking into the steering rack issue as suggested above by cds82911. Any other ideas are appreciated and thanks to all for their help.
You clearly haven't been around long enough to identify truly unhelpful, insulting feedback. Give it a little longer - someone around here will set the bar properly high.
Have you determined whether the tire is touching the fender well liner when the car is at full lock? Your video doesn't sound like this - but it also doesn't sound like a typical pegged-out power
steering pump
to me.
Tire is clearing the fender fine. I should add that this sound is really, REALLY loud, much louder than the video depicts and I can feel the steering wheel vibrating. It doesnt seem to happen when turning right, only left.
Just an update to my original post earlier in the month, when I descibed a loud and strange sound from the front of my 2001 911 base Cab during a full locked left turn. I was unable to dedicate any real time to the problem until very recently, and the update is that while I still don't have a formal diagnosis, I do have some information which could stand for some feedback. I recently had new rotors and pads installed and am reasonably sure this sound did not start until after that. I took the car back to the mechanic and after he spoke to his staff he was told when they did the job there was a small mounting boss cast into the front right spindle (which is the original spindle) which did not readily match/fit into the newly installed rotor, and might have been rubbing against the rotor. This mounting boss is on the front right spindle only. This was not an issue for the old rotor (which of course is gone now), but the original rotor for this car is Sebro and original pad is Textar. After reading many posts here in the 996 forum which appeared to suggest they were one and the same, (including one post where a person called the factory in germany and was told the only difference was the box they came in), I decided to save a couple of bucks by buying Sebro/Textar, instead of "Porsche". In light of this most recent info I'm re-thinking this.
Shot in the dark, but if anyone is familiar with any of this please chime in. Other than this noise issue, the car is a very good example with IMS, new upholstery and a host of other upgrades. I plan to sell it, but I like sleeping at night and refuse to sell anything which might have even the chance of an issue, and if there is an issue I want to be able to say what it is. I'm reposting the vid below - for those with decent volume, go ahead and turn it up because the iphone version doesn't do it justice.
