Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I read many contradictory messages regarding the replacement of the variocam solenoid cover replacement job. Mine seems to leak a little. My car is a 996C2 1999. I would like to replace the two variocam solenoid covers (part# 996-105-223-52 ) and also the solenoid O rings (part# 996.105.903.05). Can this be done without removing the cam cover? It seems doable according to the Youtube video : You Tube Any trick regarding the connector which seems too big to pass through the cover hole? Thank you for your help!

POST 3Original post

I think the connector fits through the cover. If not, do as CDS^^ says above... You don't need to remove the cam cover... good luck

POST 4Original post

You have a 99 with a 3.4 engine. The wiring will fit through the cover. You can replace the "cover/seal" without removing the cam housing. (there is no o-ring on the 99 3.4) It's been my experience that the "cover/seal" almost never leaks, more common is the solenoid is leaking out the end where the wires exit. It is necessary to remover the cam housing to replace the solenoid. You can give a try cleaning the solenoid/wiring really good and dry and apply RTV silicone sealer to the end. That stuff is amazing and will stop an active non-pressurized oil leak.
