I ran straight 100 in my Lotus track car, but it was supercharged and I tuned the ECU to run on 100.

Suggestion

If you are comparing it to fuel with 10% ethanol then replacing the low energy content ethanol with gasoline will certainly make a noticeable difference.

But again in the Porsche I'm only running a couple gallons to get 93+ octane not straight 100 since the stock tune on the 996 is for 93.

IMO, this proves that these motors that are tuned for 93, run more efficient on 93.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In my area we only have 91 octane. I used to run 100 octane in my Lotus race car and there's a 100 octane pump in my area, about 30 miles away from my house. So I put about 1/4 tank of 100 octane on top of the 91. The car runs so much better, feels like 25 more HP. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'll be keeping a couple fuel cans of 100 octane to top off the top 1/4 every fill up from now on!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14158791

I have read about that stuff, my understanding is it's nowhere near as good a real race fuel.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 14158776

You know this how? Calibrated butt dyno? Unless you reprogram the ECU, putting 100 octane gas in won't do squat

POST 6Original post

Ehhhhh.. If the car is tuned for 93 and you don't have 93 available you can do the math and combine 100 and 91 to get to 93. Will the difference be butt dyno detectable? Dunno, but it's not impossible that there is a difference. Is it worth the hassle? Probably not. Would going to straight 100 make a difference? Almost certainly not. Especially in street driving conditions.

POST 7Original post

never noticed a difference running race gas in my cars. Only added race gas for safety measures, not for upping my power. Would need a tune for that.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14159100

That was my thinking. By adding a bit of 100 I am getting to 93-94 which according to the manual is what the car was tuned for. Running 91 and at altitude (5000 ft) has to take its toll.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14159056

I do have access to a dyno at my local race shop, might be interesting. And yes my a** has been calibrated.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14159100

Agreed. If the car is not tuned for it then the benefit will only be up to what it's tuned for. In this case raising from 91 to 93 by adding a bit of 100. I ran straight 100 in my Lotus track car, but it was supercharged and I tuned the ECU to run on 100.

POST 11Original post

And you can actually feel a difference between 91 and 93? The ECU adjusts for 91 and I seriously don't think you could feel any (if any) difference Will you think its better, absolutely! I have done the octane dance at the track and in reality, no difference, at least for me

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14159517

Well is sure feels much more responsive on the low end. High end no difference.

POST 13Original post

So, the title could have been, "Wow, 91 vs 93 octane makes a difference!"

POST 14Original post

You think you can keep up with a viggen now? I suggest you also add couple of cans of NOS to your fuel tank. That should definitely give you top end boost you are looking for. Probably extra 50 WHP from octane and NOS booster alone. Not bad.

POST 15Original post

If you are comparing it to fuel with 10% ethanol then replacing the low energy content ethanol with gasoline will certainly make a noticeable difference. I hate ethanol.

How have I never seen your car in Northern Colorado? I drive 1,000 miles per week I have a lowered, exhausted silver C2 with black GT3 lip.... if you ever see me around

POST 17Original post

+1. Race gas has no ethanol. Pump gas does. Our local track offers 93 without ethanol as well as 100. 110 is leaded! Has! Side note: I switched over to race fuel for my lawn mower and weed eater as well. It can sit for the whole winter and not clog the carbs. -td

POST 18Original post

All good thoughts. Here is some facts comparing 91 to 93 I have a scan gauge II in my 996. Twice while traveling I found myself not being able to get 93 , so had to get 91. Both times mpg fell 3 mpg. Secondly, my wife's Jaguar requires 93. This car is driven very conservatively by wife. She drives me crazy by putting in 91 instead of Sunoco 93. Her mpg is 24.6 mpg with 93 snd 21 mpg with 91 based on 300 miles before refueling. IMO, this proves that these motors that are tuned for 93, run more efficient on 93. One could conclude that more hp would be logical. Just my $.02

I'll look out for you. I live in south Fort Collins and work in both Fort Collins and Greeley. The 100 octane pump is at 47th Ave and 34 in Greeley. It's labeled "Cam2 racing fuel" for legal reasons but I've talked to the local Sunoco rep who told me that it's really Sunoco 260 GT race gas. It's 100 octane with 9.8% ethanol. When I had my Lotus race car I used it all the time... Way cheaper than buying fuel at HPR or in 55 gallon drums. But again in the Porsche I'm only running a couple gallons to get 93+ octane not straight 100 since the stock tune on the 996 is for 93.
