The large bearing is not able to be installed unless you split the case and that's why you dont hear people actively installing those in theirs.
Leading evidence: 'Install unless you split the case' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install unless you split the case' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Anyway, it wasn't clear how many miles are on that car now (you said the engine was replaced after the 100k mark) and I'd pick a factory reman over a "rebuild" any day.

The engine was rebuilt by 9xx and the bearing was replaced with the 2008 model bearing.

I have a 2002 C2 whose engine was replaced with a factory remanufactured engine by a Porsche dealer in 2009 (replacement was not due to IMS failure but it now obviously has the later, larger bearing that has an extremely good record).

Sounds like the 2002 IMS shaft & bearing was replaced with the only IMS you can buy from Porsche, a 2008 IMS shaft with the largest IMS bearing used in M96/M97 engines.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I used to own an 02 boxster s and now I'm looking to get into a carrera. I am familiar with the IMS and many of the boxsters woes and preventative maintenance, but still learning about 996's.
I oculd use an opinion on an opportunity that I have/ There is a 2002 996 carrera 4 available locally for $22k. It had 100k on it and the IMS went. The engine was rebuilt by 9xx and the bearing was replaced with the 2008 model bearing. Good deal, or run for the hills?
Story doesn't add up. The 2009 IMS is the bigger upgraded type which can not be retrofitted into the earlier engine case.
Not to say the car is bad - just that the story as written doesn't work.
2009 is the 9A1 engine.

model bearing is the m97 if I recall correctly.. low failure rate.
OP - ask the seller for the engine part #. You'll find out exactly what heart is in the car.
The engine is about 75% of the value of a low-to-mid mileage 996.2, FYI. Get a healthy drivetrain and electrical system and ignore the rest.
I have a 2002 C2 whose engine was replaced with a factory remanufactured engine by a Porsche dealer in 2009 (replacement was not due to IMS failure but it now obviously has the later, larger bearing that has an extremely good record). Total miles on chassis is 84k, total miles on engine is 26k. I've been toying with selling the car and would be looking to get more than $22k but not that much more ($5k more?).
Anyway, it wasn't clear how many miles are on that car now (you said the engine was replaced after the 100k mark) and I'd pick a factory reman over a "rebuild" any day. But obviously, condition is everything, right?
I don't mean this to come off as a "for sale" post but it's a data point I guess for you to compare. Seal Grey, manual, 18" factory lightweight wheels, Black leather (Comfort seats option), PSM, Aero side skirts, Xenons and some other stuff...
Yes, C2 much quicker around the track.
And if you have to say you don't mean for it to come off as a for sale post then you already know that it's coming off as a for sale post.
OP, If it's a reputable shop it probably isn't too bad of a deal. I've got an '06 3.4l factory crate engine in my '99 track car and it has the larger single row IMS in it (like the '09). That's the first I've heard of a shop using an '09 IMSB but theoretically it could be a good approach. I would ask more questions and then offer 18k hoping to get it for 20k.
Yeah, C2 is preferable to me as well as many others, but everyone has their reasons and preferences. Poor weather at ownership location is (somewhat surprisingly) not necessarily a good reason for choosing one over the other. I don't think a C4 holds its value any better than a C2. A C4S maybe but they seem to be sinking a lot over the last year as well...
Rest assured if I do decide to sell it it'll be advertised far and wide, responding to one post with my thoughts is hardly a hope for a sale or any kind of marketing strategy. There's no other way to accurately convey the information that makes any relative sense and would be useful for the OP besides even better info from people who just completed a sale with somewhat similar circumstances, none of which so far have responded (besides you having just sold your Mk1 on BAT.)
Sounds like the 2002 IMS shaft & bearing was replaced with the only IMS you can buy from Porsche, a 2008 IMS shaft with the largest IMS bearing used in M96/M97 engines. If the car comes with a good warranty it could be a good deal.
It's an independent sale and the rebuild has a transferable one year warranty. The rebuilt engine was just installed. I've not heard of people retroing a newer model porsche ims bearing. I had only heard of people installing the LN solutions. That being said, ims solutions were kind of off of my radar after installing the LN sollution on my old boxster.
I appreciate everyone's feedback! I'm torn between this and a 99 C2 that still has 84k and the original bearing. I would have the LN installed on the 99, which would make them nearly the same upfront cost.

Don't feel bad most of the people here have but don't seem to recall much about it.
Mine is a dealer reinstalled and the new short block has the large bearing that's non-serviceable, same as 2008 model.
I guess if they rebuilt everything, they could fit the large bearing once the case is split. The large bearing is not able to be installed unless you split the case and that's why you dont hear people actively installing those in theirs.
