Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
My problem was the intermediate shaft housing was warped.
Leading evidence: 'intermediate shaft housing was warped' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'intermediate shaft housing was warped' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check crank' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If it was the RMS they were going to check the crank.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just dropped the car off at the shop to have the second RMS installed. The dealer called and confirmed it was the RMS. He also told me that the seal installed in December was not the updated one.
The car is about to turn 30,000 and I asked them to take a good look a the clutch. I may be selling the car and it would be nice to give the new owner a new clutch. It just had the 30 k service done and a new set of cats so it should be in good shape.
I took mine in a couple of months ago for an RMS leak. They replaced the RMS and intermetiate shaft seals. It is still leaking, so I took it back in this week. If it was the RMS they were going to check the crank. If the crank is out of round, RMS will keep failing. For this case, they actually replace the engine. Because my car has a very strong engine, I have no desire to have it pulled and replaced. I realize that a new engine would be literally that, new from throttle body to exhaust manifold; but there is no guarentee it would be as strong. In addition it would certainly be weaker the months I would go through a new break in. Keep this in mind if yours fails again.
Fortuantely my problems was different. My problem was the intermediate shaft housing was warped. They replaced the shaft, housing and the seals.
I'm in the same boat with the strong engine. My car is quicker than a friends with a re-mapped engine. I'd hate to roll the dice on a new one.
On a replacement, I'll have to wait until I get my next spine mod completed. I'm supposed to be getting some trick light weight titanium pieces.
I'm confused. I had the RMS update (997 part #) and the car is not leaking (my first Porsche ever that does not) and all we did was chaneg the seal, not the engine.
Ed,
The RMS seal to leak is not unusual. The 997 now uses a 2-piece seal that retrofits the previous 006 and Boxster seals. If they put a new seal in an it does not solve the problem, i.e. continues to leak, they are supposed to check if the crank is out of round. If it is out of round, then you get a new engine. This check isn't ususally done until the second leak. Normally they also replace both the intermediate shaft and RMS seals at the same time when either is leaking.
