POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last night I started the install of a Kenwood DNX6990HD, replacing the OEM CDR-220 head unit. This was probably pretty much like the other DDIN installs that have been documented, so I won't go into excruciating detail, just a couple observations: 1) I got an install kit from Rod Birch at Car Audio Innovations. Much of the kit is off the shelf (the head unit bezel is a custom piece), but the value add is being able to contact Rod for help and advice. I've installed a lot of stereo equipment in many cars over the past 30 years, but a pro probably does as much of this stuff in a month as I have in a lifetime. Big props to Rod for providing exactly the right parts, clear instructions, and prompt responses to my emails. FWIW, when I ordered a kit he contacted me to find out exactly which of the three audio options I had, and which head unit I would be using. 2) IMO the most difficult part of the job was relocating the climate control unit. And that was probably because I have XXXL hands and the harness for the climate control has four good sized plugs. Really, it's all pretty straightforward. 3) One tool that helps a lot is a fish tape of some sort ... mine is a long piece of flexible plastic with holes on each end. When I need to fish a wire through the dash I zip-tie it to one end of the fish tool, using the hole in the end. It really helped for the climate control harness, the Bluetooth mic wire, and the USB/iPod cables. I used a regular piece of wire to fish the GPS antenna connector from the top of the dash to the radio opening. Anyway, that's probably more excruciating detail than necessary. I've attached a pic ... I need to do some cable management on the iPod cable, but other than that I think it's a pretty clean install.

POST 5Original post

Nice clean install...... I would add a 911 logo in the free space between the top of the screen and the bottom of the vents....It would need to be the "right size" to look nice though.........

POST 7Original post

Looks nice. I also have a double-din Kenwood and think it really makes the interior look nice, plus the sound is quite nice (especially compared to the POS stock unit). I keep meaning to look up how to customize the screen on the Kenwood but haven't yet. Any tips?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There's a decent YouTube video on the subject here: How to Change Splash Screen on Kenwood DNX6190 - YouTube I actually found the graphic that I used as part of a piece of public domain wallpaper. For most graphics work I use GIMP ... it's free and does what I need it to do. IMO, the key to getting a decent looking splash screen is to keep the proportions consistent. What you'll eventually need to produce is a 800x480 bitmap. If you start with something that doesn't have the same 5:3 proportion, it'll get distorted when you scale it to 800x480. So, what I did was to take the original wallpaper (imported into GIMP as a JPG file), cut and crop until I had something that was roughly 5:3, then scale it to 800x480 and save it as a bitmap (BMP file). I don't know why, but the specific format required is 16 bit Full Color BMP and RGB setting of R5,G6,B5. Fortunately GIMP has this as a selection in the "save as" menu when you select the BMP format. After that it's just a matter of putting it on a thumb drive and following the instructions in the video. FWIW, my splash screen is actually on a textured background, but it doesn't show up well in my pic. I also have a version that just has the Porsche logo ... I loaded that first, thinking I would prefer it, but subsequently decided that the version with the text looked better. If you want my splash screen, PM me your email and I'll send it to you. I found the original wallpaper through a Google search and it had no copyright notices or statements of ownership. That said, I don't know if I'd load it on a flash drive and put it on eBay <g>.

I used to use GIMP awhile ago but ever since the advent of online editing has become relatively more robust(and automated in some cases), I've just been going to http://www.pixlr.com to do all my light duty editing. No software to install or manage. Also the advanced editor allows you to save in different formats including .bmp files.

When I first bought my car, I pulled the insides out of a couple of the cassette holders and used them for cell phone holders. Wouldn't work with the phone I have now though, it is too big. I put in a DNX6990HD not long after that. If you haven't yet, make sure you have the latest firmware update. The bluetooth was not useable on mine before I updated it. I put another in my Silverado after that and it had the same issues till I updated it.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10760111

Good advice. My unit needed both a firmware upgrade and a Bluetooth upgrade.

POST 13Original post

I only remember one option available when I did mine. Did you do both updates the same way? Bluetooth work really good with the Motorola phone I used to have but now I have a Samsung S4 and it takes a while to connect and sometimes I have to do it manually.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes. There are both firmware updates and Bluetooth updates available off the Kenwood site: http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Car_Entert...ment/DNX6990HD Select the "support" tab and you'll see two URLs. The top goes to the page with the v1.11.00 firmware update. The bottom (after several menu selections) goes to the download page for the v1.12.30 and 1.42.02 Bluetooth updates. FWIW, I have not had any success as of yet getting my unit to take the 1.42.02 Bluetooth update. It gets about 3/4 of the way through (judging by the update progress bar), then hangs. I'm thinking it may need the 1.12.30 update first, so I'm about to try that. UPDATE: turned out to be a bad USB device ... tried a different one, update went without a hitch. I drove around a little and tried a few "can you hear me now?" calls. Pre-update, Bluetooth had been as flaky as a Martha Stewart pie crust; it now seems like it just connects and does what it is supposed to.

POST 18Original post

Looks great!!! I got me a Pioneer and I like is so far.

POST 19Original post

I updated both today in my truck. Will do it in the 996 when I get the transmission done. I didn't realize you eventually get to the bluetooth update following that link. Hopefully that fixes the connection bugs. Have you tried updating the Garmin part? Have you adjusted the equalizer and other audio settings? It really improves the sound a lot. I forgot how terrible it sounds with the default settings compared to after they are changed. Doing the update reset everything.

POST 20Original post

Looks very nice. Im about to pull the trigger and replace my ancient nav radio unit in my 02 996. I've done a bit of research and planning to go with the Pioneer avic x850BT. Replacing the nav radio means I'll also be pulling out the DVD unit (stores the ancient, outdated nav maps) that is above my climate control and will replace with a pocket insert like you have. Anyone know where to purchase the pocket insert? Is that a Porsche part, or justa standard car dash piece? If anyone has any opinion on my choice of the Pioneer X850BT, let me know.

POST 21Original post

I ordered all the dash pieces separate and the install kit from a place in England. I will see if I can find the part numbers tomorrow if you still need them. The pocket was the most expensive and I think around $50 I would take a good look at the Kenwood DNX6990HD. I liked mine enough that I had to put one in my truck too. lol

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10766572

Ditto on the Kenwood DNX6990HD. The factory refurb units are pretty cheap (well under $500), the firmware seems reliable, and it uses Garmin navigation, which IMO is a plus. That said, I can't really say anything bad about Pioneer; I had a Pioneer AVIC in a previous vehicle and it just worked. The only issue I ran into was that Pioneer's iPod cable was junk; it's notorious for losing one channel after a few months of life. The consensus recommendation on the AVIC forum was to use an Apple cable instead. Anyway, my DNX6990HD install was into a 996.1 (2000 Cab) with the "hi-fi" (non-Bose) stereo. The harness is probably different for different OEM stereo options. Here's some info on part #'s and other useful products. : The cubby that fits the upper half of the lower console is P/N 996.552.253.01.01C ... $49.75 from Pelican Parts The trim piece for the climate controls (in the lower half of the lower console) is P/N 996.552.339.00.01C ... $8.50 from Pelican The wiring harness for my car is a VW/Audi part, $14.99 from Crutchfield: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1207017...g-Harness.html The antenna adapter is also available from Crutchfield ($4.99): http://www.crutchfield.com/p_12040VW...a-Adapter.html To get the factory radio out, you'll need radio removal keys. The OE Porsche parts are available from Pelican or Suncoast for about six bucks. FWIW, the radio keys work OK but they're hell on your fingers. Wear gloves. I didn't and my fingers are just about healed up Crutchfield sells two tools I'd recommend -- the Pro.Fit Panel Tool and the Wire Worm: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_042DM40...anel-Tool.html http://www.crutchfield.com/p_042DM45...Wire-Worm.html I have a gazillion panel tools and use those flat plastic panel tools the most, by far. The Wire Worm helps a lot for running wires, maybe because I have big hands that get stuck behind dashboards. . BTW, if you have Amazon Prime, some of this stuff -- like the antenna adapter and wiring harness -- is probably cheaper from Amazon than anywhere else. Hope this helps.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10766469

I haven't updated the Garmin stuff yet. Yes, the 1.42.02 Bluetooth update seems to have fixed the flaky connection problems. I haven't tried some of the functionality yet, like streaming music from my phone. Mostly I just plug in an iPod, or turn off the music and listen to the engine I left the equalizer and audio controls alone because I'm in the midst of a speaker upgrade ... when I get that done I'll have to go back and re-adjust everything. FWIW, before I installed the storage cubby I pulled out the rubber insert and drilled a hole in the back of the cubby so I could pull the iPod and USB cables through. Once you put the rubber insert back in place it covers up the hole, so it still looks pretty clean. Having access to the USB port makes upgrades (firmware, splash screen, etc) far easier.

Yes, I found it online and used GIMP to get it into the right format (800x480, 16 bit full color BMP, RGB setting of R5,G6,B5). You can use pretty much anything with scale of 5:3 horizontal to vertical. PM me if you want a copy of it.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 10768904

Where did you get the surrround trim panel for the unit? And how does the unit mount into the dash?

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14072488

The surround trim for the Kenwood unit is from Car Audio Innovations. There are several other options available ... for example, go to eBay and do a search on "Porsche double DIN install kit." The unit mounts into a double DIN cage. The cage fits into the dash opening after some cutting. I used a couple small screws to secure the cage.

POST 28Original post

Very quick question... I found this kit on ebay and my question is this all I will need to make the connection? http://www.ebay.com/itm/321174534207...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Thank you

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14090681

This kit should have everything you need for a 99-02 car with either the base or "hi-fi" configuration. FWIW, the difference between the two is that hi-fi includes speakers in the doors. That doesn't matter because you're not changing the connection between the amp and speakers (assuming that you're retaining the factory amp). If you have Porsche Communication Management (PCM) you need a different wiring harness because the connections to the amp are different. 03-04 cars use fiber optics between the head unit and amp and require a different solution.
