For instance, do I wire the money in exchange for the original title being fed ex'd, should I use an intermediary/agent for this?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After a lot of searching, I am 99.99% sure that I found the car. It's a 02' seal grey 996 with full black leather (56000miles). I have provided the vendor with a $500.00 deposit and the deal is conditional on PPI inspection at Pioneer Center Porsche in San Diego. Thereafter, if necessary a further negotiation in price and hopefully a completed deal.
I'm wondering if anyone else has completed a long distance deal (i.e. Canada - San Diego). Specifically, I'm interested in the logistics of the transaction itself. For instance, do I wire the money in exchange for the original title being fed ex'd, should I use an intermediary/agent for this?
Any comments would be appreciated.

How much is the car? PERSONALLY...I would look at a local Porsche delaer, and get the Certified Pre Owned warranty to 100k miles.....I did and it saved me $10K with an engine replacement, as well as a TON of other things fixed under warranty and not costing me a cent....With 56k miles and no warranty it would have to be a pretty good deal, especially having to transport or drive it back to Canada....By the way, I bought my car from a Porsche dealer, BELOW blue book with a warranty. So I actually did well, just because its at a dealer doesnt mean you have to pay THAT much more for it.
Just bought a car from a local Porsche dealer in Chicago and drove it back to Kansas.
You did the right thing by putting a small deposit and leave room for further negotiation pending PPI.
I took a cashier's check for the balance and presented to the guy in exchange for the car.
Not sure if you are having the car shipped to Canada or not (Highway 1 is a mighty fine drive up the coast this time of the year!). But if you were to pick up in person, I won't wire anything in advance.
Good luck!

I live on Houston and I bought my car in New Jersey. I had it shipped in a closed truck. I can give you the name and number of the carrier I used. I was very pleased with their service, and everything they told me regarding pick up, price, delivery time, etc was spot on. I went through several companies who gave me differing prices, delivery times, etc. I finally found this company and they were straight up about everything.

Assuming it is a private party seller. I would first ask for a copy of the title, front and back.
If there is a lienholder, call the lienholder and arrange to pay them in exchagne for a release of the title to you with an assignment signed by the seller - usually part of the title form. The seller will need to give the lienholder written authorization to do so.
If there is no lien, ask the seller if he has a lawyer. Have the lawyer agree to release the money you send the lawyer to the seller when the seller gives the lawyer a properly assigned titled. Obviously, you need to get the lawyer agree to send the assigned title to you.
Sorry. Perhaps I was unclear. It is a private deal. So no warranty. I know I may be dancing with the devil on this one. Once again, I am relying on the PPI from the dealer to hopefully disclose all the faults of the car and then I'll go from there.
Thanks for the advice. I would prefer to use an agent (i.e. lawyer) as an intermediary to hold the funds in trust pending delivery of the vehicle and title.
If the seller happens to be buying a new car from a dealer, you could have that dealer complete the transaction. Some will do it as a courtesy. If so, the seller avoids some tax and you get a clean title from the dealer in exchange for a certified check. I've done this twice and it takes away some of the stress.
FORGET THE TRUCK - DRIVE IT HOME!!!
Good luck!
Try TFX out of Toronto. I was about to buy one in LA and had them quote on transport. It was going to cost $2300 CAD. They'll also broker the vehicle through customs and take care of all paperwork for $195 CAD. It should be about the same from SD. It's an enclosed carrier (NASCAR style)...I'm still thinking of using them for my car from Vancouver. They are pricey but they're the best; many of my clients use them for concepts and autoshow vehicles.
Good luck with it!
Have the seller photograph every nook and cranny of the car, interior, exterior and underneath. Check out the photos. Indeed, perhaps a SD rennlister can go check out the car for you and test drive it. The price seems fair so that's cool.
Last, you DEFINTELY should drive it back to Ontario. Take Hwy 1 north and then the Trans-Canadian highway. I have ridden it on my motorcycle and it was AWESOME. Take a week. Have fun and learn about the car.
PPI on the 02' 996 w/56K (private deal) revealed the following issues:
RMS leak and both valve cover areas
looks like vario cam solenoids are leaking;
rattle noises from the right rear (could be exhaust tips or muffler?)
Very stiff clutch engages at top of travel - needs replacement;
Wheels need alignment;
CEL - Mass air flow sensor about to come on;
car sits slightly higher due to 997 19's - not recommended by Porsche for the 996;
For $39,000.00 am I getting a repairable car that should be good to go or am I inheriting someone else's headache? The dealer that did the PPI gave me a rough est. of $1675.00 to fix the RMS and replace the clutch. Is this within the range for that type of repair?
Also, if anyone could comment on the wheel size and whether a car with these type of wheels (assuming they're properly spaced and aligned) which will never be tracked or driven at break-neck speeds, can live a normal life. OR, is this wheel size just a mistake that will cause damage to the suspension, etc.?
Any comments would be appreciated.

At the very least tell the seller you expect all these things taken car of before you seal the deal. If he doesn't go for it, walk IMHO. There are lots of meticulously maintained p-cars out there. Look in the PCA mart ads and try to find an enthusiast. That's the advice I got from this board and it paid off.
