I can see the advice now: Don't buy a 911, buy a Boxster, but change the tires to cheap rock hard versions with an 80,000 mile warranty.

We use CU's website occasionally to research stuff like home appliances, however, their ratings are also suspect.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Current auto issue lists 02 and 04 911's as used cars to avoid. Apparently CU is not on speaking terms with J.D. Powers. I sort of have to admit that with the chronic RMS problem, perhaps the cars belong there. Listing only two years is probably due to the lack of response and CU's wholly unscientific method of only sending surveys to its own subscribers. My family seems to collect cars on that list, yet somehow, they are all pretty trouble free. The magazine also presented manufacturers' spec'ing high performance tires as a conspiracy to make car purchasers overpay for tires. These tires, say the experts at CU, cost more and wear out more quickly.

POST 2Original post

Go figure. Sticky rubber lasting less than non-sticky, long distance rubber.

POST 3Original post

Wow good thing I avoided that and bought my '04 911 new instead. This weekend I finally crossed the 10K miles mark with pure joy. I would buy this car again regardless of what the magazine says.

POST 4Original post

People who read CU are generally not risk takers. You probably won't find many of them with 911's. We use CU's website occasionally to research stuff like home appliances, however, their ratings are also suspect. We picked a toaster off CU's site yesterday, and everywhere else we looked on the web users hated it. We ended up with one not recommended by them. You'll also see a lot of bias in their reporting, such as - "the Toyota had a roomy 16.2 cubic feet of trunk space" - "the Ford had a cramped 16.2 cubic feet of trunk space"

POST 7Original post

What's the context though? For a compact Corola, 16.2 cubic feet is roomy but for a mid-size Taurus it might be a little cramped. But I agree that they seem to be biased in their reporting sometimes.

POST 8Original post

Oh, Oh, I am in DEEP Sh*t, 'cuz I bought a USED '04! BTW, did I miss any of the negative/bummer emoticons?

POST 9Original post

Programmatore, You are correct that context matters, and I don't recall the exact series of articles. Nonetheless, they are hopelessly biased to vanilla cars that cater to the driving-as-transportation-at-best-value crowd.

POST 10Original post

I agree. They seem to be all about "value-for-money" and "safety really counts". They can't comprehend that a buying a sports car is mostly emotional.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They gave the Boxster a rave review. Curious how no Boxster year models hit the used cars to avoid list. I suspect that 911's being there is simply CU's flawed methodology. They do not even list 911's in their specific trouble area tables. One presumes that is due to a small sample size because the Boxster is listed. Nonetheless, with a small sample size from a very non-random sample, they decide to list two model years as cars to avoid. I suspect any real "car guy" thinking (they must have some since they liked the Boxster) gets watered down by committee. I can see the advice now: Don't buy a 911, buy a Boxster, but change the tires to cheap rock hard versions with an 80,000 mile warranty. Then, don't drive it; ride the bus.

POST 12Original post

Gota911: I don't think you missed any of the emoticons, just the amount of them. 'Cuz according to the mag you're going to be and since you bought a USED '04.... And you'll probably need a lot of after all the obscenities you'll share while driving your car. Sorry my friend life is very unfair!
