Glad you're ok and hopefully you can buy 'er back, make a few bucks off the parts and find a clean roller for your engine or something along those lines.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Blew a red light. Don't know how I missed it. Probably still the most frustrating thing.
I'm sure it's totaled. The a Jeep Cherokee hit it in front left doing about 35. It drove just enough to get it into a Walmart parking lot. Luckily, no injuries.
I have Grundy classic car insurance. They told me someone should reach out within 24 hours. Not sure if I should get it towed somewhere or just wait.
I'll have some pics up later. Considering buying it back if the price is right since the engine has just under 45k miles. I just did the IMS bearing, coils, plugs, RMS, AOS, WP, LT therm - you know all the good stuff. Feels like a waste to let all the documented work go to a junkyard.
Sorry about the loss....real bummer. You should definitely buy back and part out or sell to NorSpec dismantling who has paid other RL members a premium over buyback price. This way you get a few extra bucks. Especially with low mileage engine.
It's a 2000. Here are some pics. I have I think 15k agreed upon value. Should have made it higher.
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Will let you know how it goes down from here. Will definitely be looking into the buyback options.
Sorry about what happened.
As OP have stated you are ok and other folks ok.
Definitely buy your car bsck, your rear spoiler is a minimum $1500 resale if, not $2000.
Even your exhaust tips could bring $400-$500, if those are factory quad tips
Your engine should bring a decent amount.
Main thing, nobody hurt.
Ohh, ow. That sucks. Glad you're OK.
I was going to say; that will buff-out after seeing the first shot (rear). Then the next shot made me utter a few bad words.
Glad you're OK.
Kinda weird that the airbag didn't go off. That definitely looks serious enough for it.
Glad you're ok and hopefully you can buy 'er back, make a few bucks off the parts and find a clean roller for your engine or something along those lines.
Sorry to see this for you.
Very glad no injuries. And hopefully no injuries tomorrow when the endorphins start wearing off.
Let's also hope the Jeep driver doesn't start having "neck pain" tomorrow and lawyer up.
Hopefully you weren't ticketed. But that's easy to beat by going to traffic court, as the Jeep driver hopefully won't show.

That was my first thought with the first picture. Don't think the front will buff out as easily.. Especially a bummer after all the work you've done on it. But, at least you are fine so you can start your next project car. Engine swap into a nice roller.
I too saw the first pic and thought, that’s not so...(as I scrolled down)....oh, damn....sorry for the damage glad no one was hurt. I too am interested if you part it out. Interested in the engine and rear spoiler.
Sorry to hear that. Glad you're ok. If you would like your car fixed, I have just the guy for the job. He repairs and paints airplanes. He's done good work on several of my Porsches in the past. However, he does not work fast. He can't keep a schedule at all. His prices are good as well. It can be repaired, if you want to go to the trouble. I'll PM you.
First, glad you are ok! You can always get a new car.
if you decide to buy it and part it out I would be interested in the seats. The leather on the ones in my 2000 is disintegrating and the beige interior are not as common as the black.
Tow the car to your house and then deal with the insurance company. This wya you have control over the dialog. Under no circumstance let the insurance company tow the car to "their location or to their shop".
It flew out. Was about 10 fit in front of the car. Wonder if I didn't get it secured all the way when I put it back last time. I'm guessing ejecting headlights is not a design feature.
Got a call from the adjuster. He recommend this too since I told him it was likely a total. Getting a flatbed in the next hour. An assessor should be out to review the damage in the next few days.
So I have an agreed value of 15k. He said ~70% is the cost when they total it. So 10.5k to fix. I don't have a good feel for prices on fixing wrecked cars, but I'm guessing it's more.
He said if it's totaled they go get a guaranteed minimum auction bid. Then I get the option to keep it for that price or just take the 15k. I'm hoping this is under 5k - if it's much more then I'm not sure I'll bother with a part out.
He also said to let him know if I have a recommended shop they could work with if it is fixable. So if you have suggestions in the North Dallas area I'm open. (Thanks doc for sending one already).
I was too. Additionally, if the cost to repair is less than 15k, then it does not get a salvage title. I guess in Texas it has to reach the full value of the vehicle before it become salvage. That seems like a pretty high bar.
Some more pics of the tow. Nice guy.
You might be surprised how quickly 15k could be reached in parts + labour/paint. For me personally the determining factor would be structural or cosmetic damage and how attached you are to it I guess?
The repair list just from what I can see in the images might be:
- Front fender
- Front bumper
- Radiator + mounts + hoses
- Headlight
- Fender liners
- Rocker panel repair
- Front suspension looks like its got some damage (or the front wheel might just be turned - hopefully)
- Rear quarter
- Rear suspension (check at least) might be the panels that make it look skewed
- New rear bumper
- New tail light
Either way hopefully it works out for you! Is it manual or tip?
That is my guess as well. I honestly don't want it to be repaired. I don't think it would ever be the same. That front wheel is not just turned, it's been rammed into the car (and has a bit extra camber now).
Just very curious what the buyback price will be.
I'm also curious on opinions of the highest value things on the car that I should line up people interested in? I want to be confident in being able to do better than the buyback if I'm going to use it.
Seems like the engine, rear decklid, and maybe rear wheels are the biggest dollar items? I'll get some pics of the interior. The seats are pretty junky, but it has the nice shifter **** (its a manual), brake lever, and 3 spoke wheel.
The car and transmission have 93k, the engine has 46k. I have a well documented refresh done in another thread and it still starts up and runs perfect for someone to check it out. I would assume those things would help with the value.
Buy it back and help another unfortunate RL member out. There's more than one that need an engine right now. Never accept their first price on the buy back, negotiate!
That'll be much more than $15k worth of damage. Years ago I had a little fender bender that just damaged one of the fenders, the headlight, and the bumper needed refinishing. Cost $4k+
Once you get in there you'll see how many parts need replacing and it'll add up quick.
Best of luck working this all out, glad you're ok!
Yeah, it really comes down to the numbers. I'm not keen on keeping a scrap car in my drive for months trying to part things out. If there's not much margin on the buyback price then I might just have to let it go.
I posted up some detail on CL (
https://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/pt...961385908.html
). Not much interest yet. No one on here has confirmed they even want the engine.
I'm trying to think of negotiation strategies on the buyback. He stated they get a guaranteed minimum bid from some kind of auction estimator. Tough to negotiate with guaranteed. The only things I could think of would be the cost to get it towed somewhere for the auction and any associated fees.
The assessor came out today and said it's at least a 15k repair. He'll have a final quote by Monday. So it's a total with a salvage title. Next step is to get the buyback price.
You can bet the guaranteed minimum from an auction house will be very low. They will offer a number that they are sure they will make them a profit at auction time.
Buy back and part it out? Depends on your and your family's tolerance for mess and risk. Even if you bought it back and sold the key components, I think you'd turn a profit. The engine, transmission, wheels and aero bits would probably be the easiest to sell. But you have to deal with the time marketing, posting, responding to every question in the book, negotiating, dealing with non-paying-bidders, shipping/freight, etc. Even little stuff like trim parts can be worth a lot to the right buyer. But, on the other hand, you'll take up space with the disassembly and storage space for pieces parts. You'll take up nights and weekends disassembling, packaging, labeling, storing, shipping and the rest. If you have the space, the tools and the patience; and it is worth the opportunity cost, it could be a money maker. Don't underestimate the amount of effort though! (If it was me, I'd buy it back and part it out. My wife is insanely patient with my Porsche addiction.)
Make another post right here on the forum vs CL. I know off at least 3 guys looking for motors in the past month. One has already asked in this thread.
If you decide to part it out. I would be interested in the spoiler and mentioned before. Perhaps the engine, if others pass. And it looks like your interior is beige so even some of the interior bits. I am only a few hours away in Houston.
Sounds like at least 4 of us interested in the rear spoiler. Big stuff would sell pretty easily and the carcass can go to a dismantler. But you have some work in front of you to even part out the big stuff.
I hope so. Just talked to insurance. They submit the appraisal details to the auction house today and should have a bid in 2-3 days.
Spot on assessment. All comes down to the buyback price. If there's a nice margin window I'll gladly part it out with quick sale prices. If I'm gonna have to nickle and dime every part to break even, then I'll just let it go.
I'll likely do that and make a classifieds post once I've confirmed that I'm actually keeping it.
Got the call from insurance faster than expected. Minimum auction bit was $3750, so I'm buying it back. But I have to send my title off to get switched to salvage. I posted it on FB and there are a couple of people interested in trying to fix it up. I'm gonna see if I can get a decent price for the whole car first. If not, then I'll start the part out.
If you dont mind clarifying for me, do you now get $11,250 from insurance (less any deductible) + you keep the car with salvage title?
Again, best of luck and i hope you part it out for maximum $$. Seems like forum regulars will pick the carcass clean based on earlier posts.
So, this is clearly an example that you you were under insured with the declared value policy, right?
Do you also get sales tax on top of the $15k policy?
Do you also get reimbursed for things like registration?
Thanks! We'll see. Right now I'm gonna lay low on the sports cars. Probably spend some time focusing on how this happened and what things I need to change.
Yep that's right. I have to send them the current title with some paperwork and they take car of getting it a salvage title.
How do you figure? I originally got a quote from my insurance company for full coverage from Hagerty. It was going to run ~$886/yr with a $500 deductible and the most agreed value they would give was 13k. Grundy cost $212/yr with zero deductible and a 15k agreed value. So as long as you have a regular work car and a garage space the value for Grundy classic car insurance is pretty high.
I originally bought the car for 10.5k, so I felt I was safe with 15k. Of course I pulled the engine and did a bunch of work that ended up over that - a lot over that if I counted my labor. Maybe I should have requested to raise the agreed value after that, but hindsight is 20/20.
I'm not sure I follow on the sales tax and registration. Is this something you would expect to be reimbursed for? The only other reimbursement I got was for the towing which was covered up to $250 under this policy. Overall, my experience with Grundy (actually phly underwriters) has been great. I have never dealt with insurance before, but I've gotta say it's been above my expectation so far.
I'm confused about your confusion. My insurance didn't offer a classic car option so they went through Hagerty to get a quote. It was a significantly worse deal than Grundy but it did not have the same limitations of Grundy.
lol, I guess my confusion is that I've never heard of an insurance company getting quotes for a customer from other insurance companies. I have two boring cars with Geico and three cool ones with Hagerty. It never occurred to me to ask Geico to get quotes for me, I never knew it was a thing. Learn something new every day!
I can't help but wonder if your insurance company got a quote and then tacked on an extra fee for their trouble. I have three cars with Hagerty and they've never set a limit on the agreed value. The 996's agreed value is $35,000 and the premium is $579.
Good question. I feel that's tough to nail down for these cars. My best guess is 15-18k after all the work I did.
Ah yeah, I had never experienced that either. I'm sure there was some fee for the trouble and maybe I wasn't getting a straight story because of it. That's definitely a good price you got.
I did want to share my experience with the actual claims part of it with Grundy, because I had a hard time finding examples when searching. A lot of people just mention saving when switching and not even the actual yearly premium. It's nice to have the premium and claim experience documented for others to reference.
FrozenApples, what a bummer.
I did forward your ad to a friend who is looking for the wheels.
Just for this thread, I have agreed upon value with Hagerty (directly) for $25,000 (could set it to whatever I wanted to) for about $400/year with no limitations. I think I have a $500 deductible.
"

His "insurance company" is probably a broker - This is what they do...
Yes, both red cabs. One needs the trans and the other has a motor making noise.
https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/c...962933346.html
Buy them both and sell one when done!
This^. The motor alone would push you into profit making territory. $6-10,000. If it is a manual, that's another $1500. If the rims are decent, another grand, etc, etc.
Thanks for the offer! I'm gonna go down the part it out route for now unless a more convenient roller show up. Long distance buys are always a hassle.
Yep, just started a listing. We'll see how this goes.
i suggest you start a new "parting my 996 out" thread and collect everyone's wish list items. best of luck. i'm curious how much value you can extract from your car when its all said and done.
So sorry this ever happened. Must be a big hit, for several reasons.
Didn't want to go to vulture mode too soon. Simple request: if the guts from the headlights are still with the carnage, I'd like to start a science project.
The drivers side wheel well took the hit, I'd say nothing from there is usable. Not sure about the cowl. I'm seeing a slightly different number in the 996 katalog for -00 and 01-
Did you see the pictures in the part out ad? The seats aren't in the best shape and the drivers side has multiple tears. Let me know if you're still interested, but I doubt they'd be worth the effort to ship.
PM sent
I just saw you FB ad. Don't take this the wrong way but, you need to be realistic about your asking price if you want to move it in one chunk...
This one has a clean title and is fixable
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace.../?ref=feed_rhc
Haha it got me an offer for 8k. But I agree, I think that's about the max I can expect for the whole car together. It's just worth so much more as parts. So I'm going that route.
Of course it's worth way more in parts but for that, you need to take it all part, guarantee them and ship them. Then you need to keep the half taken apart car somewhere for a long time. I would buy a roller and swap the engine/transmission into it and sell it. You will make a lot more money on it fairly fast and then you can try selling the rest slowly to make even more money.
Yeah that is a major downside. Roughly estimating, I think it's worth at least 12k as a part out, but that's probably with at least 6mo to a year of parting it. Gotta figure out if that makes sense vs straight 8k offer and be done.
I've played with the idea of the roller. Honestly, if one shows up nearby, I might go for it. But it's all in the details of the car and the timing to make that happen / worth it.
Assuming that you don't want a shell in your garage/yard for a long time, I'd strip off everything of easily marketed value, and have a scrapper haul off the rest of the shell for scrap value.
Take lots of pictures, box up parts and label every box (keep an organized inventory).
The people that do this well, seem to have everything boxed up and ready to go.
Get some good shelves, and store everything away in an organized way so it can be pulled, labeled and shipped. Then I'd put ads here and on eBay (craigslist seems to be less effective these days), and wait it out.
If your prices are fair (and from what I've seen so far, they are), you'll sell stuff.
The biggest/heaviest bits are the engine and transmission. You already have offers for those, so I imagine they'll go fast. The rest will go with time.
Yeah I did. Sorry to those who have pinged me for stuff. Realized I don't have enough time to pull parts for people right now tho. Most want a bunch of little things that take a lot of time and will make it hard to sell as a whole. Trying to sell it as a whole or at least sell the motor before I start tearing it apart.
Also seriously considering getting a roller and just swapping it. Started it up the other day to show someone and realized how much I miss hearing the engine run.
Been scanning CL(search tempest) / Ebay / Facebook (modified search range to cover all USA) / 6speedonline / pelican / PCA / Rennlist for a roller. Tough to make a deal work in a way that makes sense when I'm looking at at least 1k shipping to get any of the available ones to me.
