When I removed mine to install the deep sump kit, I discovered it already had the X51 baffle, which had been installed by the original owner when the car was new.
Leading evidence: 'Install by the original owner' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check put ln's new billet sump plate' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Since the OPs is cracked, it will need to be replaced too.

Suggestion
The deep sump also provids 1 1/2 quarts of additional volume when running the oil level at the half way mark on the dipstick (to prevent flooding the AOS).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My sump plate has a hairline crack that weeps a drip of oil after a while. I could JB weld but would rather get a replacement. What are the improvements to the standard plate and baffles over the years from the early boxster to the 997s? Does anyone know which are interchangeable? There should be plenty of them sitting around at the dismantlers and forums so as long as I'm going to the trouble I'd like to replace it with a better one. I have searched a bit and don't need/want a deep sump at this point.
The X51 baffle helps prevent oil starvation in long sweeping turns on the track. It comes with the LN Engineering 2 qt deep sump kit, which is what I put on my 911, along with the skid plate. You can install the X51 baffle on the standard sump cover. When I removed mine to install the deep sump kit, I discovered it already had the X51 baffle, which had been installed by the original owner when the car was new.
There is the OEM X51 baffle and also the metal version sold by LNE, made by EBS Racing.
All options use the stock sump cover. The EBS Racing metal baffle can be had for the stock cover, a 0.5qt deep sump, and a 2qt deep sump. The latter 2 incorporate a spacer between the sump and the stock sump cover.
If you street drive your car, IMO, the deep sumps hang down pretty far from the already low engine position.
If you don't want a deep sump, IMO, this is the best option:

Find a used sump cover to replace your cracked one. DC Automotive is a good used Porsche parts supplier, or

of course....search for Porsche 996 Oil Pan....I didn't see any listed as "sump cover"
Good point about reusing the original sump cover with the 2 qt kit. Since the OPs is cracked, it will need to be replaced too.
The original X51 baffle on my car has rubber flaps. The new one from LN Engineering has metal flaps.
Sump cover is the terminology I use. It's not an oil pan, but that is the most generic terminology, I suppose.
Yes the OEM X51 baffle has a metal frame but rubber flaps. The EBSR/LNE baffle uses the metal doors. The stock non-X51 baffle is all plastic and does not seal the full sump, only around the pickup.
As a street car that may see duty in the odd parking lot, train crossing, awkward transition, (Hood River has some STEEP HILLS), or ski resort the standard depth sump cover and skid plate are a better choice. Sitting at a sunny sidewalk cafe just the other day I watched a slick visor capped 991 Targa owner standing next to his car in a private lot across the street having conversation with an acquaintance. At the conclusion of their talk he hopped in his car and proceeded to take a straight path exiting over the rise up and out of the lot, high centering his undercarriage and then applying throttle to scrape through his mishap. New to performance cars or unfamiliar with the concept of advanced urban route selection I suppose.
It is my impression that the sump plate "oil pan" is interchangeable over the boxster 996 997 motors but that the early ones are less desirable given the exposure of the bolts, (the later ones are recessed).
It looks as though the 997 baffle may be an improvement over the original 996 version. Is it a variant of the X51?
Big thing w/ the 997 is they got rid of the swirl pots that the 996 had...this speeds oil return back to the sump, at the expense of more foaming. The swirl pots were to reduce oil foaming but they slow the return of oil to the sump.
The 2 qt kit I installed came with he 997 returns. I run Driven XP9 on the track to minimize foaming. The deep sump also provids 1 1/2 quarts of additional volume when running the oil level at the half way mark on the dipstick (to prevent flooding the AOS).
Good question. Replacing the sump plate is an opportunity to upgrade the baffle WIIT, etc. In addition to real world driving, there will be opportunities for sporty rides and track time, so there may have been baffle updates/revisions that are useful.
Mantis Sport makes a 1.2L extension that they say "saves 5/8" of ground clearance. It has an integrated plate (ie the plate and extensions are one piece) and a windage tray.
I agree that this is a waste for street driving.
The LN 0.5L sump "expansion" will accommodate their x51 baffle, which seems like a nice compromise for non-track but spirited driving. Thus when you drive on the "bottom half" of the oil gauge you have the full amount of oil a stock sump has.
