Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If the engine exceeds the 1,300 rpm mark *, the intake camshafts are adjusted by 12.5 (by 25 if measured a the crankshaft).
Leading evidence: 'Adjust by 12.5 (by 25 if measured a the crankshaft)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust by 12.5 (by 25 if measured a the crankshaft)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just disconnect the solenoids and go for a drive, then re connect them and see if you feel a difference.

Interesting thread running over on the turbo side.

On the second run, the variocam would have been off over 1500.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Interesting thread running over on the turbo side. Essentially:
Stock:
0-1500 RPM: Variocam off, 0 degrees
1500-redline: Variocam on, 30 degrees
Performance Modified:
0-1500 RPM: Variocam off, 0 degrees
1500-4000: Variocam on, 30 degrees
4000-redline: Variocam off, 0 degrees
The modification provided powdrhound with and additional 120 hp and 120 ft/lbs of torque above 4500 at 1.2 bars of boost.
He tested this by doing 2 runs. One with the
solenoid
connected, one with it disconnected. On the second run, the variocam would have been off over 1500.
With very similar DMEs it makes you wonder what the NA engine would respond to similar changes. Anyone with a dyno want to find out?
Factory forced induction engines have a completely different cam profile so the results will be completely different. It would be easy to test this on a NA. Just disconnect the solenoids and go for a drive, then re connect them and see if you feel a difference. If you can't feel a difference then the results are insignificant.
N/A Vario-Cam 0-1300 OFF
1300-5200 ON
5200-redline OFF
This is for the 3.4 Vario-Cam, the 3.6 Vario_Cam Plus does similar but is not ON-OFF it's progressive
Basically, the N/A motors already use this "trick" to get the most out of the engine on top-end !!!
So does anyone wanna place some bets? I think if it works at all I doubt it will be more than 5hp on the NA engines, that turbo car has some mods to it so i can see how it would create a ton of difference there. But im always looking for more power so im open to trying it
To be clear I have to unplug the vario cam correct?
Before I asked them I read the post and im not 100% sure on how to do it. If someone else is able to look at it and can give me an idea of what to do I'm willing to try it out.
Great info. I'm very surprised by the RPM points. It seems like the 3.4 has the most power starting around 6,000 RPM, so I always assumed that VarioCam was having the most impact at that 6K-ish RPM range.
For whatever reason, my notes indicate the RPM range is 1,300-5,920:
VarioCam, the adjustment of the intake camshafts at engine speeds of approx. 1,300 rpm* and 5,920 rpm, produces a major part of the engine output, the engine torque as well as the good exhaust values at idling speed. Engine speeds below 1,300 rpm produce a slight overlap in the valve stroke curves for the intake valves in relation to the exhaust valves.
This particularly affects low proportions of hydrocarbons (HC proportions) in the exhaust gas before the catalytic converters. If the engine exceeds the 1,300 rpm mark *, the intake camshafts are adjusted by 12.5 (by 25 if measured a the crankshaft).
Adjustment of the camshafts to produce a greater overlapping of the valve stroke curves for the intake and exhaust valves results in improved cylinder charging and thus an increase in engine torque. In the case of engine speeds above 5,920 rpm, the intake camshafts are returned to the basic control times (as for engine idling speed). If the intake valve closes later, additional amounts of intake air can be drawn in. This produces a recharging effect since the flow of air is not interrupted. This also results in improved charging of the cylinders and an increase in performance.
