Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Fan doesn't run after engine turned off on my '99 996. Is this normal? If so, how long should the fan run? What are the most common issues as to why the fan doesn't run? It runs if I leave the ignition on.
Thanks, Peter
The cooling fans and engine compartment fan are controlled by the cars DME. In most cases they will not operate after the car has been turned off. In some cases they will turn on or stay on after the car is turned off if the coolant temps or engine compartment temps get higher then the preset threshold.
There is a sensor on manifold on the passenger side. If the compartment temperature hits a certain degree (I forget what it is), the deck lid fan will turn on, and may stay on when the car is off.
In most condition, the fan will not come on. I will track mine on a 90 degree day and it won't be on.
Nothing to worry about if it is not coming on.
I have never once noticed my C2 running it's fans after being shut off....no matter the temp. However, the TTS seems to frequently run them after shut down.
The engine compartment purge fan rarely comes on.
From the service manual...
"Switch-on conditions for engine compartment fan (this fan pulls air into the engine compartment) The engine compartment fan is switched on when the engine compartment temperature is > 176 degrees F or the coolant temperature is > 216 degrees F.
After-running of engine compartment fan
If the ignition is switched off and the engine compartment temperature is more than 140 degrees F, the
DME
control module remains in readiness for another 20 minutes. During this time, the engine compartment temperature is retrieved every 10 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is > 185 degrees F , the engine compartment fan is switched on for 20 seconds. If the engine compartment temperature is still > 185 degrees F after this time, the fan remains on for a further 30 seconds.
Peter,
Check the right side of the motor behind the power steering reservoir, between the intake runners for cylinders 4 and 5. Should be a rubber grommet holding the temp sensor.
