Unfortunately I'm in New York, where changing cats can be problematic.

I had a previous set which I think may have been Cargraphic that I did not like....for me Maxflo was finally what I am happy with after a half a dozen different set ups.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking for a sound upgrade to my 996. I like a deeper, more guttural sound. Based on videos of each, it seems the Fabspeed is more to my liking. That doesnt mean the Fister sounds badbecause it doesntI think I just prefer the Fabspeed sound. But, in all honesty, its hard to tell from a video. Ive never heard either in person.
Im wondering who has experience with either one of these (or both) and looking for opinions/reasons why one might be better than the other. While they both produce great sounds, theres a significant difference in price and benefits.

So I have tried Fabspeed Supercups and Maxflos on my 996. Here is the Supercups:
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q...30FF&FORM=VIRE
The supercups sound great on the track as you can see but I did have drone at 2500-2700 that drove me crazy on the highway. My wife hated them when I left in the morning too. So I went to Maxflos and it really has been perfect with no drone. The sound may not be quite as loud on the track but really its good enough.
I also have some bypass pipes that I bought from someone for $120 that I never used because I was happy with Maxflos. While they are not fabspeed, they look identical. If you want, them I would sell them for what I paid. Low investment in the event you don't like it.
I have heard great things about fister but never had them on my car.
I responded on the FB post too - but I have had both on my 997. I currently run the Fisters but had the bypass on for a year... I loved them both.
The Fisters are definitely more subtle. Something about the bypass pipes though....
Make your life less expensive and get the ones from NHP instead.... I can't fathom paying that much for 2 pieces of pipe from Fabspeed. OR - the really inexpensive way to see what you like is this - go to the local muffler place and have them bend you 2 pipes for $50 to try out. See if you like the bypass and go from there.
I've got a lot of good advice here! From what I've been reading here, and other places, I think the Fabspeed is going to be overkill for me. I don't want drone, my 996 is a pretty much a daily driver for me, but I attend a lot of car events with it… however, I don't track or race the car, so I don't need the crazy, insanely loud option. Just a little more meaty sound. The Fabspeed Maxflow setup was recommended, but that has quite a price tag on it. Regardless, I have a lot of options now I hadn't heard of or considered prior. Lot's to think about!
I bought a used set of Fabspeed Maxflo mufflers last year. I'm very pleased with the sound -- a little louder than the stock mufflers with a deeper, throaty tone. Maybe it's because I have a cab, but I do not notice any droning. I also bought the Fabspeed quad tips; I don't know if these make any difference in sound, but the finish quality is excellent and I like the way they look.
I had a previous set which I think may have been Cargraphic that I did not like....for me Maxflo was finally what I am happy with after a half a dozen different set ups. If I were you, I would wait for a used set and pay 50%
I loved the Fisters I had on my 993, so decided to go that route for my 996.
In fact I just picked up my mufflers from Darin yesterday, and will be installing them this weekend.
One of the reasons I went with Tubi, they are not that loud until you accelerate a little harder than conventional driving.
At idle my suburban with stock exhaust is louder than my 996 with Kline long tube headers, 200 cell X pipe and Tubi Style mufflers.
I really miss my Tubi mufflers. The sound - complete with the burble when you get off the gas - is unparalleled for M96 mufflers, and I've listened to a lot of M96-powered cars.
I have Afterhours Mufflers $900 and Aftermarket 200 cell High Flow cats $Free due to helping a friend swap his entire system.
My car is pretty damn loud, but in a good way. However my mid section with HFC's is not an X pipe design and I do like the higher pitch sound of an X pipe. So that is in my future.
I've had my Fisters for about 6 years and still love them. I can't compare them to other aftermarket exhausts as I've never tried any other ones. You might want to try the Fisters as the biggest bang for the buck. If you don't like them (which I doubt), you won't have any problems selling them.
I love the sound of my Fisters - and continually get compliments on it. I think it's an easy choice when you consider that no muffler really gives you more power. Go with FD and spend the money you save on suspension upgrades.
Thank you for chiming in with your feedback and kind words on the Maxflo mufflers, they are to this day the best selling muffler system we've offered for the 996/997 platform.
Supercups definitely aren't for everyone that is for sure, we tailored that system towards those who operate the car consistantly and enthusiastically above 3k rpm. That being said, I'll tell you what our Sport Cat X-Pipe with the Supercups have an exhaust note on throttle that to me is worth every sacrifice in cruising comfort. This 997.1 below is running this setup, albeit with our

Thanks for posting! One of my favorite videos haha.
I appreciate the kind words! What setup on you running on your car?
I am glad to hear you are enjoying the Maxflos you picked up, they change the exhaust note into what I believe the car should have sounded like from factory. For a more aggressive overall sound level, most of my Maxflo clients end up picking up one of our X-Pipes as well as those factory cats are the biggest restriction on power, and by freeing up that restriction you get more of a change in sound level and overall aggressiveness compared to change in exhaust note.
Muffler bypass pipes are certainly not for the feint of heart, and are overkill for most but intoxicating for a select. Inexpensive way for a weekend warrior to enjoy some good laughs, wreak havoc in tunnels, and smiling until your face hurts accelerating next to the highway divider and under overpasses with the windows down
For your reference, for your goals regarding the sound of your car I would suggest starting our Maxflo mufflers. Superb throaty, deep, sporty exhaust note, and even with our Sport Headers and Catbypass X-Pipe they promote a very comfortable sound at cruising speed, to the point where myself and two local 996 clients running that setup can't notice any resonance/drone characteristics as cruising speeds. Here are some videos our our Maxflo Mufflers in action on the 996/997.1 platform.

I was going to try Fisters but I needed to take my exhausts off the car and send to Darrin because he didn't have any to fit my C4S. Found a great deal on Fabspeed Maxflows. The sound was good but I wanted a little more. Added the xpipe and now I'm loving it.
IMHO the most significant change to type of sound is achieved moving from crossover cats to an x-pipe which sounds more high pitched at high revs to my ear. Which sound you like better is just personal preference. You're right about youtube, 996 exhausts Ive been lukewarm toward online sound vastly better in person. Fisters to me sound nearly just like a PSE, but I've heard homeade versions with larger diameter pipe that sound too deep for me. I think the fabspeeds have a nice bassy growl without being overly deep and seem louder than the Fister mod.
I went with Fisters plus 200 cell crossover cat pipes to give a little more volume and aggression. Sounds great, never drones. Very civilized with the windows up under light throttle, and makes nice burbles windows down in the same circumstances. Things only get better the harder you drive. Sound improvement per dollar ratio is tough to beat. That said, it might sound like crap from the outside for all I know!
Unfortunately I'm in New York, where changing cats can be problematic. I assume that CARB certification is prohibitively expensive just for California and New York?
Well, luckily the cats are staring you in the face once you put the car up in the air. In the event you can't get through emissions, you can also take a short bit of time to switch them back to factory for the test. Small price to pay to enjoy the benefits of upgrading them through the driving season : )
