Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Am thinking about purchasing a 996. Do you guys/gals think a newer 996 (2002 or later) warrants the premium that it commands on the market (compared to a 2001 or earlier)? I know the differences (engine, interior changes, lights, etc) but just like to know your thoughts. I have budget for 36k right now just wondering if I should save up some more for a 2002 or newer... Thanks.

POST 3Original post

I think you'll hear most people echo that you should get the newest Porsche you can afford. I've owned a 2001 and now a 2004 and I personally like the improvements in the 2002+ model year enough so that I would save up for the right 2002. Having said that, if you can't swing the price difference you'll be very happy with a pre 2002 911.

POST 4Original post

I second RIAD's comment, buy the newest you can afford. If you can't afford an 02+, for $36K you should be able to find a nice 00'. Since the resales are very stable, You could always sell it and move up to an 02+ later without taking a big hit.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your comments. However do you guys take into account the mileage in the car? In terms of getting the "newest" 996 one can afford? Say a 2000 with 60k miles vs. 1999 with 20k miles everything else being equal? Additionally, what has been your experience in the average yearly maintenance cost of a pre 2002 996?

POST 6Original post

2001 C2 here... my maintenance has been oil & tires, that's it.

POST 7Original post

NSG, buying the newest you can afford holds true, provided the condition is taking into account, of course. Naturally, an '01 with 30K well-maintained miles is a better/smarter buy than an '02 with 60K poorly-maintained miles. It certainly goes without saying a PPI is a must.

POST 9Original post

First off it is NOT a premium that the 02 is commanding, rather it is commanding the fact that it is a year newer than an 01, etc. The delta between 00 and 01 is very similar to the delta between 01 and 02. Do like most will tell you......buy the newest car you can afford. ANY P-car will be a joy to own and a dream come true behind the wheel. If you are patient and NOT overly picky then you will no doubt find the car you are looking for. Best of luck
