Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have a 99 C4 Cab I boought from a Porsche dealer, it delevoped a problem, so the dealer replaced the engine with a factory remanufactured engine.

Per the owner, the car had some subsequent repair work done due to an oil leak, but has been dry since.

What did he do to fix the problem, replace the block?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm in the market for a 996 C4 Cab, and have run across a vehicle that I'm interested in, and wanted some input from the community about this car. It's a '99 with 54k miles that had a remanufactured engine due to a slipped cylinder sleeve on the #1 cylinder. The engine was remanufactured by an independent mechanic, and came with a six month warranty. Per the owner, the car had some subsequent repair work done due to an oil leak, but has been dry since. The car has had about 2000 miles put on it since the work was done. The seller is the second owner of the vehicle, but does not report any evidence of abuse or neglect of the car. The exterior and interior look nice, very good for the car's age. I'm looking for a daily driver that would be my primary car in Chicago (and then next year in Baltimore). I'm kind of torn about this car; on the one side, I feel like things that could have gone wrong, have already gone wrong and the car's got years of relatively trouble-free motoring left in it. The reman engine means the car's been thoroughly checked out and "factory" renewed. On the other hand, the car's had major problems, and the engine's been pulled apart -- does this make her a setup for more problems to come? I've never had any experience with a reman engine. This will be my first Porsche, and I've dreamt about owning one for years. Any advice?
I'd stay away...no such thing as a mechanic "remanufacturing" an engine. It was rebuilt. Now how well it was rebuilt is anyones guess. Does this mechanic have excperience rebuilding Porsche engines? What did he do to fix the problem, replace the block? With what a new block, used block, or did he repair the bad block? I have a 99 C4 Cab I boought from a Porsche dealer, it delevoped a problem, so the dealer replaced the engine with a factory remanufactured engine. What that is is a BRAND NEW engine that has never been in a car. It didnt pass the initial inspection, so it was sent back, torn apart, rebuilt by hand with new parts and rechecked. These engines generally are very reliable and sometimes are stronger. Now if it was a purchased remanufactured engine from Porsche and just installed by an independent mechanic, then maybe....but what is the price? You are probably interested in this one because its price is appealing, but its a reason. You state that because of the remanufactured (rebuilt by an independent) engine that the car has been factory renewed...thats COMPLETELY false....they didnt do anything to the transmission, drivetrain, electronics, suspension, or anything else...and if they installed the engine improperly damage can be done to these systems as a result of it. I would look for a nice car at a PORSCHE dealer, then get the CPO warranty which will cover all major mechanical issues for at least 2 years and up to 100k miles. You may pay alittle more for the car, but you will save big in the long run.
Sorry, I incorrectly phrased this ... the remanufactured engine was installed by an independent mechanic. It was not a Porsche reman engine. The seller wants $37.5. You are also correct that the transmission, drivetrain, electronics, suspension, etc were not replaced.
