Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

I would also recommend that the IMS ( Porsche calls it "Bearing base gasket") be replaced also.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Found this today, don't know if it has ever been posted. There may be some dedicated gearheads who would attempt it, I'm not one of them! http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/996rms/rms1.php

POST 2Original post

Thanks for posting. I found it very interesting.

POST 5Original post

Very interesting to see. I don't know if I'd have the ***** to do that work myself.

POST 9Original post

Replacement seal looks similar to the original to me, anyone know which improved version PN# 999 113 490 41 is?

POST 10Original post

Nice post! I think I'll be using that for referance this spring.

POST 11Original post

Interesting post but....Porsche has a specific tool for replacing the RMS. Is is suppose to assure the RMS is placed in evenly and at the right depth.

POST 12Original post

The newer style RMS looks similar, but is different. Most seals have a spring on the inner area, (where the seal would make contact with the crank). The updated RMS has no spring. When you buy the newer RMS it has a plastic piece on the inside of it. This is there to protect it while installing it with the factory tool. After it is installed, the plastic piece is tossed in the garbage. The newer RMS retails for $16.04. I would also recommend that the IMS ( Porsche calls it "Bearing base gasket") be replaced also. If it has the older style bearing base, then it should be replaced with the newer style. The way you can tell, when it is removed the old style gasket is round, where as the newer style is flat. You cannot install a new style bearing base gasket on a older style bearing base. You must replace the bearing base with the newer style. ( I believe the newer style is $40 something dollars.)

POST 16Original post

Good information woody-77, 4 sound and Tool Pants It seems the 4th generation seal carries the 997 101 212 00 part number, and according to Uwe, of RennTech forum, the 997 engine has an extra crankshaft bearing to reduce vibration in this area. The tool also allows to push the seal in further to minimise the unsupported crankshaft length.

POST 17Original post

The m97 also has a lightened counterweight on the crank at that position, all in an effort to decrease the load at that point.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
