Thanks everyone, I've disconnected the cables so I'll re adjust.

I've tested 1-2-3 but didn't get time to get into 4-5-6

I just used an adjustable and one of my box wrenches to tighten the nut.

I have used these style cables on other trans' shifters and tcases with no issues with them loosening

I was just going to buy a 29mm crows foot until I saw the Numeric one was slightly thinner on the sides so for 28AUD it was the best option - it should arrive tomorrow.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
I'm halfway through my Numeric Racing cable install, got them in but few questions:
1. What lubricant should I use to get the rubber sleeve back into the car? Its being an absolute PITA
any tips? I'm just trying to press it in from underneath - i'be got a long extension and i'm pushing it back in but little to no movement. I've got B+ into the sleeve already.
2. When I hooked it all up I was able to get reverse, 1, 3, 5 engaged but couldnt get 2, 4, 6 - which cable needs to be adjusted? Feels like there isn't enough travel to get them engaged.
3. Was going to ask what everyone used to do up the nuts but I gave in and bought the Numeric tool, across the flats they are 29.3mm so I'd assume a 29mm crows foot would have done the job too.
Thanks!!
While were on the topic here are a few notes that aren't included in the Numeric instructions but are in the factory manual:
- There are two tabs that need to be bent up to release the rubber grommet to allow it to come out - the factory manual mentions to bend these tabs up to allow the grommet to release.
- B+ wire also runs through the grommet needs to be taken into account when re installing the grommet - its a major PITA because it inserts into the fixed metal housing which has very little play in it (as it should as its important!) although not a very thick cable.
Unfortunately the grommet is not available as a separate part in the 996 PET but maybe available under a different part number - maybe a 944 or 928...
Be careful of the b+ I had to wrestle the rubber boot out of underneath the car. I cut it up a lot to get it back in tightly. I cut big groves in the top and popped in the cables and shoved it back in with dawn soap. The numeric wrenches were brilliant and a must have.
Thanks I was able to get it out with quite some effort - definitely not an easy job! I used silicon spray to lubricate it and knock it out - then I realised there were metal tabs holding the top in place. Once I figured that out it slid out quite easily.
Getting it back in - different story - hard and challenging job I had lubricated it with silicon spray before getting it back in but its not enough. I was thinking about purchasing some red rubber grease but if dish soap works just as well ill coat the hole from the cabin and the grommet from the back. Did you hammer it back in or just push? So far i've been pushing with a long 1/2 inch extension but I think some slightly more brute banging into place might be required.
This job is painful!
Any recommendations on the gears if I can only get R, 1, 3, 5? also noticed the shifter didn't return to centre like it should but i'm guessing that's a symptom of the misalignment...
I was just going to buy a 29mm crows foot until I saw the Numeric one was slightly thinner on the sides so for 28AUD it was the best option - it should arrive tomorrow.
Yep thanks read it a few times and watched both before the install and still something is a miss.
I'll get back under and keep adjusting the cables.
Not sure which one needs to be adjusted. If I get 1,3,5 + R have I done one cable correctly?
Or do they work in tandem/together?
Also that grommet is an absolute PITA they don't make too much mention of it in the PDF! Haha.
Sorry i dont remember have much issue with the install. Maybe i just got lucky? I just used an adjustable and one of my box wrenches to tighten the nut. Its a little tight but u really dont need any special tools .
Thanks im sure I'm close just needs a bit more adjustment.
Unfortunately I didn't have a 29mm wrench and the ones I was going to buy were close to the price of the tool anyway.
I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but did you pay close attention to this:
#5. This is the import step. The demonstration videos are on the website and make sure you watch them. After the cables are connected to the transmission brackets. Move the reverse selector in one direction and in the other direction will require more force to engage. This selector is spring loaded and always returns to center. So you have to hold it in place. Next push and pull on the cable to make sure it will travel far enough to push and pull the selector in gear. Next do the shift selector. This one is not spring loaded and will stay in positon. Push and pull on this cable to make sure it travels far enough to engage the gears. Once it is adjusted properly lock the jam nuts in place. See pics!
One cable controls the left to right dimension of the shifter and the other controls the fore/aft, translating them both into the direction of the cable movement. The cable controlling the fore/aft sounds like it is not adjusted right. When the lever is all the way forward, the cable pushes the arm on the shifter all the way back. If you don't have the arm pried all the way when you tighten the ends on cable you may not be able to get into R-1-3-5. You can adjust the cable length with the turnbuckle to allow you to get into those gears, but you'll need to lever the shifter arm on the transmission back to get the adjustment correct.
I wrestled with the rubber plug for about 45 minutes before giving up and calling it a night. The following day I went back with some chemical guys citrus wash and shine... it popped in like butahhhhh...hmmm Im not sure that sounds appropriate 😳
Thanks everyone, I've disconnected the cables so I'll re adjust.
I made the error of making the cables line up with the pin - clearly not enough travel.
I'm also going to coat the grommet in dish soap to give it some lubrication.
Also another question - did anyone cable tie the mounting points just for extra security or does tighting up the nuts suffice?
Keep you posted!
I used silicon spray to get it out - worked well after I figured out the tabs.
I did give it a generous coating of silicon spray when I reinstalled it but it didn't work - think I need something thicker. The factory manual recommends tyre paste (contifix) which would be thicker.
I think silicon spray is too thin to get back in but perfect to get it out as it can get into the tight gaps.
I've got a gallon jug of tire installation lubricant (snot) I bought for doing motorcycle tires that works great for stuff like this. If you're in the area, bring a container with a lid and you can take some home with you.
Thanks for the offer - unfortunately i'm in Australia!! I'd take you up on the offer if I was local though
I'll cable tie them as well - last thing anyone needs is to lose gears :s the dealership had also cable tied them so I guess its just a best practice.
I did not cable tie them. The nuts jam the mount togethee tight. I have used these style cables on other trans' shifters and tcases with no issues with them loosening
Okay! Went back and adjusted the cables the bottom cable was too long not allowing proper engagement of 2,4,6 but adjusted and now all good!
Also I'm about 8-10mm from having the grommet seated properly that has been a major PITA!
The cables are thicker than the originals so I'd recommend modifying the grommet to accommodate them better. Basically I've had to just push it in with force.
Not a pleasant job.
Success!!
Got the grommet back in what an absolute PITA... Recommend to have a can of silicone spray handy!
Anyway got it all together im getting all the gears but haven't test driven yet.
Not that happy with 2,4,6 engagement though... Thoughts? Cable end might be too short or too long - it engages but doesn't feel as solid as 1,3,5.
Yet to test drive so I don't know what it's actually like.
Thanks Dan, appreciate that. I'm impressed with the Numeric quality as well.
I'll try and get our time zones aligned and give you a call.
If not everything is in place - (no test drive yet unfortunately) 2,4,6 engagement isn't as solid as 1,3,5.
Any thoughts? Guessing one end link either needs to be shortened or extended.
Right so!
Cables adjusted - test drove today - absolute perfection!
The install is difficult because of the grommet but otherwise - all good
I've tested 1-2-3 but didn't get time to get into 4-5-6
Verdict - would recommend - brilliant upgrade
