I had my local dealership look at it last year and changed the oil; they were amazed at the condition.

I agree about getting IMS bearing replaced, probably with the permanent solution vs retrofit.

They're still just used cars and a depreciating commodity.

Some might argue that don't bother replacing the IMS as it would be too expensive but you'll have a very hard time selling the car and get lowballs saying they have to replace the IMS and will offer $2-3k less anyways.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all! I love these cars very much but I have to move on from my 2004 996.2. It has only 19,400 original miles and it is in pristine condition. I want to sell it to someone who may aim to keep it like I have. Im thinking that someone would appreciate it. Im asking if anyone might have suggestions as to my options. Im based in Salt Lake, Utah. Thank you all.
Main reason for moving on is family. I have to use Porsches other, larger cars for my growing gang.
First, thank you for the reply!
Carrera Coupe. 996.2. 2004. I will take a photo of the original sticker. I have photos too; the car is in my garage. I have always taken it for service to a local shop. Never had any issues at all. I had my local dealership look at it last year and changed the oil; they were amazed at the condition. I wanted the dealership opinion just as a barometer.
Have the IMS replaced if it hasn't already, then pay for a proper paint correction, and then have some professional photos taken. Then can try listing on BaT if time is on your side.
A car with that low of miles,a proper service history, flawless paint and a recent IMS will go for top price. Some might argue that don't bother replacing the IMS as it would be too expensive but you'll have a very hard time selling the car and get lowballs saying they have to replace the IMS and will offer $2-3k less anyways.
Coupe command more than cabs, so that helps. Arctic Silver (i have same 03 c4s) is common and doesnt get price bump that other colors appear to get. 6 speed manual helps as well vs tip.
I agree about getting IMS bearing replaced, probably with the permanent solution vs retrofit. I would emphasize that when selling. As was said, great photos, low miles, and full service records on BaT and hopefully you getting a bidding war. Best of luck!
I have a feeling this guy isn't trying to find out how to get the most money for it, but how to find a buyer who would appreciate the care he has taken of it and continue to do the same. Honestly, it seems near impossible, but the best bet I think would be to call around to independent Porsche race-shops and see if they know of any customers who long for such a car.
I truly appreciate the words of wisdom. Ill consider the direction to take. Im not certain yet but this is great fodder for thought. Im not in a rush, fortunately. My goal is to sell it to someone who isnt going to just run it into the ground
)
Then an ad in Porsche Panorama magazine might reach enthusiasts who would treat it as well as you did.
I bought a low mile 996 (21,700 miles) 6 months ago and have put almost 9,000 new miles on it. The car performs perfectly and i feel like Ive given it a second life. Hopefully the same happens with yours.
Yeah I second the opinion that if your primary concern is selling it to someone who will love and cherish it - you either sell it to me. (I've got two already and I have a problem, please help me!) Or you take it to PCA meets, list it in your local PCA newsletter, etc. Perhaps even Rennlist marketplace if you become a member?
GLWS, I'm sure it's a showstopper.
I get the idea behind if you sell it PCA you will find a collector to take care of it, but I really think if you call around to some shops there is always some young person who would personally take incredibly good care of it through his own labor, dying to find the nicest one that he can afford.
Thanks, all!!
I have to figure it out and I truly appreciate the help. Im wondering what I should expect from a sale?
Quick pic for reference.
Another quick pic. Kept it like a baby but now I have real babies
I would say probably about 30k, maybe a little more. It is a time capsule car, but 996s without a GT or Turbo in the name (or even 4S) only get so much on the market.
You could always just keep your beloved time capsule. Baby seats do fit in the back, and once they are too old for that they have a few more years that they can fit.
I came back because I had the same thought as
@marlinspike
. With 996 Carrera prices being what they are, do you have a family member or super understanding spouse that will let you rent some storage space for it? Maybe you'll find the right owner in the meantime if you're really just jockeying for a 992
The more I think about this the more I feel like you should just try to hang on to it.
So, not to be the wet blanket here, but since no one else is, I'll volunteer...
A car with super low miles doesn't guarantee that when you start driving it most everything on the car won't break.
As for what you'll get for it, like my friend the car dealer says, "there's a butt for every seat".
I don't think you'll get north of 23K from anyone that knows these cars well, but I guess that's your goal, find some goober head that doesn't, and has more money than sense, or they want to put it in a museum!
But, good luck anyway!
I think in a private sale it's worth 28k, stock as is. I personally wouldn't let the IMS scare me away if I was a buyer. Hold your ground and you'll get your price, there aren't many 04's left with under 20k miles and I think they're underappreciated and are slowly starting to increase in value.
It does look very nice and low mileage is a plus, but face it...Porsche made a bazillion of these cars. They're still just used cars and a depreciating commodity. Given the really nice condition, I think you'd be doing very well to get $24-25K tops.
28-32k for a well presentented car on BAT right now. use their option for professional pictures and make sure the photographer comes an hour or two before the sun comes down and not in the middle of the day.
Go get a dme report from an indie or dealer and a lightweight ppi and ask them to take a few photos of underneath the car. Thats how you get top dollar.
Out of curiosity, can I ask...why does it matter to you do much what the next owner does? Your car is bone stock with some very basic options and a common color, right? It has been no labor of love (repair, restoration, customization)...and you've not really "made it your own". One could argue that you, yourself have not "appreciated" it by letting it languish in a garage (which, word on the street says, is the worst thing you can do to one of these cars) If your question is really "how do I get the most for it?", then just ask that, no? As some have said, get a preemptive PPI, get the car detailed/paint corrected, take a ton of photos, dig up all the maintenance records you could have, and perhaps look to BAT....and good luck to you, sucks to sell your baby.
I'll bite, What are you looking to get out your car ?
It might be easier to help you sell the car.
I get people ask all the time asking me about mine; cost, upkeep, insurance MPG and when they hear entry 911 prices, their 48-72K or SUV isn't as fun any more.
