Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report a fix
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Replace starter' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'starter straight away' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace starter' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Replace starter', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Don't know how you'd trouble shoot it, my garage knew it was the starter straight away.

Suggestion
I'm guessing my problem might be related to the low battery and I either need to drive the car more often or get a battery maintaner (probably after replacing the battery).

Suggestion
I need to get the charge level above 12.45 (75%) before I can test the alternator.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone new to forum and new to Porsche I own a 2000 996 6 speed coupe and every so often when I start the car it makes a loud noise like if the starter is getting stuck has anyone had this problem and is the stater even the problem???
Any feedback is greatly appreciated thank you in advance for your attention
Elias
Thank you very much!!
How can I trouble shoot that to narrow it down. Because it really sounds like the starter and it does not do the sound all the time
Nice looking car, Elias!! After I wash my car I get a squeal from the belt, but it goes aways after a second or 2. Not sure if that is when you hear it. Maybe after one of those Florida rain showers you hear it?
It sounds like the kind of noise you would get if you DID forget to let go of the key while starting? It could be the starter drive gear grinding briefly on the flywheel, maybe because of a faulty solenoid. Just a thought. it's really that loud of a mechanical noise..It happens only when I have a crowd or im showing the car to a buddy..
I had the same thing, sometimes it made the noise other times it didn't. I had the starter replaced and problem solved.
Don't know how you'd trouble shoot it, my garage knew it was the starter straight away. Cost 300 supplied and fitted in UK ($560ish)
I have a '99 and had the same problem when I first got the car last year. It suddenly stopped happening and hasn't come back in at least 11 months (knock on wood) - the car is my daily driver. In fact, I think I started a thread on this if you want to search for the replies.
Jeff
I've had this problem intermittently for 18 months. I haven't sorted it yet, but I intend to. Following are things I've been told to check:
1. Power steering fluid (low fluid can lead to the PS pump making screaching noise at startup)
2. Polyrib belt (can slip if glazed or if belt tensioner has failed).
3. Idler pulley bearings
4. Alternator or voltage regulator
5. Starter
I've checked out the first three, but still intermittently have the problem. (especially when it is cold outside) I'm now checking out the alternator. One thing I'd recommend checking is your battery voltage. It should be 12.6 volts with no load on it. If it is 12.24 volts it is only 50% charged. I just checked mine and it is 12.35 volts, so it is only about 60% charged. This means the alternator has to work extra hard at startup to try to charge what is essentially a discharged battery. I suppose this could make the the belt slip at startup. I need to get the charge level above 12.45 (75%) before I can test the alternator. I'm guessing my problem might be related to the low battery and I either need to drive the car more often or get a battery maintaner (probably after replacing the battery).
Thank you all for all your feedback I have not had the noise again.
Porsche told me a little trick.
1. Get in the car
2. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to radio mode.
3. Wait for the little counter to go down.
4. Then start it on a short fast turn not slow
5. Off you go
Porsche says its amazing how many people dont know the correct way to start a Porsche and after doing what they told me I have not had the noise back yet. (20 starts and counting)
Try it post back if it works..
