Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just got my first under the hood look at a 996 today, I have a 911 3.2 and also a 930. this is my first look at a water pumper, where did they move the oil filter to and also is the oil tank in the same place? Does it use the same amount of oil as a carrera?

POST 2Original post

The oil filter is located underneath the engine, kinda near the drainplug. Drinks up ~8.75 Qts.

POST 3Original post

The oil filter is a cartridge that is protected by a plastic screw on sleeve that requires a special filter removal tool. There are great DIY instructions over on Loren's site ( renntech.org ).

POST 4Original post

Special removal tool? I just took my filter wrench and unscrewed it

POST 6Original post

996's dont have oil tanks, they are wet sump not dry

POST 7Original post

Kens911 - The 996 requires (+/-) 9 quarts of oil.

POST 8Original post

If you let it drain long enough, (I let mine sit over night), It takes all of 9.5 qts. I found this out quite by surprise. I had drained the (warm) oil sump. and it was just dripping a few drops, so I removed the oil catch basin and put a 1 pound coffee can in its place, so the drops wouldn't get in the shop floor. One thing led to another, and I did not return to the oil change job till the next morning. By then the coffee can had overflowed and there was oil on the floor. The oil cooler and lines apparently hold quite a bit of oil, and it does not drain readily.

POST 9Original post

I do the same as Gretch did on accident. I now let the car drain for quite some time and let it ALL come out. There is more oil in there that you think and you will be surprised how much you can drain with the more time you give it.
