I'm just not sure we'll ever settle a HP discussion until every dissenter and doubter has one installed on their own cars and independently dyno-verified.

The good news is once you get the heat sheild all assembled and installed once you can go back to the stock box within 15 minutes...so I may still be able to do my own test.

On an aside, and though it's a different beast, my motorcycle (Honda CBR 600F2) got a noticeable improvement in performance (that was dyno validated) by replacing the exhaust and the air filter for freer flowing versions.

To get 23hp--as K&N claim--you would need to pony up $17K to get REAL hp bumps of 26hp (OEM Porsche) which REQUIRES changing internals......not the frickin airbox.

I have 50 pieces. K&N requires you sell at NO LESS then Jobber pricing which is $299. Nobody else has the intakes. This is a great value compared to the competition intake. 23 horsepower is what K&N claims on their dyno tests. We will post the results soon. As well we will be doing an independent test on our dyno. Most of these are PRESOLD but we have some left. Shipment from K&N has left. Will follow up with a picture of these on the pallet
.
So if you see a to good to be true price, then that is what it is...
Call me to order or order online
hmm.. that's only K&N's dyno right? Are we gonna see the indepedent dyno? If it looks anything close to the K&N dyno, i'm buying the intake right away!
A. "You must return your vehicle to stock during harsh or inclement weather". Does this mean you can't wash the car or drive in the rain without reinstalling the original air box? Is water dripping through the rear hatch going to ruin the filter? Or void the warranty? Or F%#k up the engine?!?!!
B. The Evo set-up looks like a similar solution, but with less dead space, and a straighter shot between the filter and intake. I would need to see an objective, impartial, side-by-side comparison, and compared with stock, before I lay down my $$$. Believe me, I would LOVE to gain 23 horses for $299, but "show me the money" (or dyno stats!).
Scott
Guys, you dont have to return your vehicle to stock, does your factory intake suck down gallons of snow...no. They do that to cover their *** for those guys who drive through flowing rivers like you see on TV.
Is it better then EVO, um... yeah, price, quality, design, fitment, and power. The ponies are there. Just watch.
That company who posted that add screwed themselves. A. they dont have any, and B. they cant offer that cheap and K&N is on them for that...
Gotta love these claims of 23 hp by air filter makers. There is claims of 23hp and there is TRUE gains of hp. An air filter will NOT net you 23hp. You can create all the dyno's you want but it just ain't true. Why do you think the powerkit costs ($16K) so damn much to get 26hp???
I don't understand why these air filter replacement companies don't just market them as sound enhancer's (which is what they are). But then again how would they sell them for $250+????
This is a form of price fixing and is illegal. The free market decides the price of products not the manufacturer. I'll be happy to file a claim if what you stated is true.
Shawn
Its fine for VividRacing to state it and sell it, it's not fine for K&N to tell their retailers anything of the kind. It's a K&N issue, not Dan's issue.
All due respect, that is a very broad statement and probably incorrect.
There are instances where it is absolutely legal for companies to enforce a pricing structure. The FTC has consistently stated this.
From the FTC website:
Q: I own a small jewelry store and the manufacturer of TimeCo brand watches recently dropped me as a dealer. Im sure its because my competitors complained that I sell below the suggested retail price. The explanation was the manufacturers policy: its products should not be sold below the suggested retail price, and dealers who do not comply are subject to termination. Is it legal for the manufacturer to dictate my prices?
A: The law allows a manufacturer to have a policy that its dealers should sell a product above a certain minimum price, and to terminate dealers that do not honor that policy. Manufacturers may choose to adopt this kind of policy because it encourages dealers to provide full customer service and prevents other dealers, who may not provide full service, from taking away customers and "free riding" on the services provided by other dealers. If TimeCo got you to agree to maintain the suggested retail price, it would be illegal. It also would be illegal if TimeCo agreed with your competitors to drop you as a dealer to help maintain a price to which they had agreed. However, a complaint from a competing retailer is not sufficient to prove such an agreement, because the manufacturer may have decided independently that its interests were better served by sticking with its policy.
And also, if you want a little light weekend reading, here's a nice article from
Antitrust Magazine
regarding the implementation of an effective Minimum Resale Price Policy:
Antitrust Magazine Summer 2003
Actually a pretty good read if you're into this kind of stuff.
I agree that my statement was a broad generalization and it may not fit in all cases. However "If TimeCo got you to agree to maintain the suggested retail price, it would be illegal. It also would be illegal if TimeCo agreed with your competitors to drop you as a dealer to help maintain a price to which they had agreed." I won't derail this thread any further, but wanted to point out that if retailers don't stand up for themselves the customers are the one's getting shafted.
PS--I'm an engineer, not a lawyer, so keep that in mind when making your legal choices
ON TOPIC PLEASE. You cannot advertise below jobber price. If someone calls in and you want to only make $5 then sure... but would you lawyers make $5 hour? Cause I wont
For any lawyers, if you want to make a ton of money in a ANTI TRUST suit, call me, I have a company i want to blast!!! They deserve it too.

Look at the cars, look at the dyno sheets. Engineering, design, and testing. I have seen STI turbo cars get 25whp and i have see BMW M3 only get 7hp. They make power....
Of course, Vivid didn't say they were obligated to sell at a retail price, they said they could sell NO LOWER than $299.
The bottom line is that, in almost all cases, a manufacturer is allowed to set a minimum resale price as long as they clearly state and actively enforce this policy with their resellers.
Nothing we've seen or heard here would be actionable against K&N.
BTW, I'm not a lawyer either. But I am a member of the California Bar and I'm the CEO of a reasonably large ecommerce company. As such, I spend WAY TOO MUCH time with my friends at the FTC on these exact type of issues.
Ahhh... then we're talking about a MAP policy (minimum advertised price). Also legal, BTW. But at least dealers have the option to sell at any price they deem reasonable.
But I agree, back on topic. Can't wait to see an independent dyno. I want one just for the sound, any bump in HP will just be a bonus.
There are actually several dealers online with the K&N kit advertised for under $299. That is the retail price. The manufacturer can suggest they sell at list, but can't force it. After all we live in a free enterprise system. If the manufacturer doesn't agree with the sales tactics of their resellers, they can hold back product.
You don't always get gains on the dyno from an intake. The JWT intake on my G35 coupe actually made 2 rwhp less than the stock airbox on the dyno although they swear it has made 7 more HP. That was dynoed on the same day on the same dyno with the JWT intake dynoed first, when it was cooler.
i have 2 more left instock. $299 plus shipping. No where else in the country are these available. Call me to order.

K&N said you do have to return it to stock, probably because the stock intake doesn't have the filter element sitting out exposed in the engine bay like the K&N does. K&N specifically says it's for mild weather applications. Even here in extreme Southern California it rains. This might be a track mod, but I drive in the real world and the weather isn't always mild. No thanks.
Because K&N knows SO much more about the car than the folks who designed and built it? I'm with you - if Porsche could get 23 legit horses from an intake alone, I think they would have done it.
I thought that Vivid Racing was going to dyno test this pretty quickly, based on their earlier post. However, they seem to be selling well before any independant numbers are out. Since that is the case, I can understand why there is no reason to hurry. I don't put much faith in the "butt dyno", so I will wait for numbers. I find 23 hp hard to fathom.
I can't understand why anyone would believe that a modern day Porsche would have 23 HP just waiting for such an easy fix. I can understand why open exhausts can extract power at the expense of sound/emissions but if getting HP was so easy to get as just going with this airbox replacement, Porsche would already have it installed. They have alot more R&D than K&N does and adding 23 HP to the specs would certainly sell more cars.
IMHO you are correct. The hp numbers quoted for these intakes are pure BS (my opinion).
I don't think that Vivid will provide an intake for an independant test because they know that an intake alone is not going to get anywhere near 23 hp (my opinion).
To get that kind of gain you would probably need headers, an intake, and a re-flash (my opinion).
As someone mentioned on another thread, noise restrictions in some countries are quite tough. Also, perhaps the limiting airbox allows the car to burn less gas and thus get better mileage. Who the heck knows? So, we've seen the manufacturer's dyno. All we need is any indy dyno and we'll have better intel.
On an aside, and though it's a different beast, my motorcycle (Honda CBR 600F2) got a noticeable improvement in performance (that was dyno validated) by replacing the exhaust and the air filter for freer flowing versions. It ended up improving peak rear wheel HP by 11% (or 8 HP in this case). Torque was improved as well across the range, but I can't remember the peak numbers.
So, there is some logic to freer flowing gear yielding results. Could it be as simple as swapping in a CAI? Could it add 23hp? We've seen manufacturer's graphs; let's hold judgment until we see an individual report (EVS on 6speed has mentioned he is doing just that).
the bottomline is K&N designed and developed this product. we stand behind K&N products, but have nothing to do with their manufacturing processes. We have seen alot of their intakes do quite well.
oh and Ray, search for our results on the Agency Power headers, same as pretty much all companies. They made 3HP. Headers dont do much at all. Your best increase on power is intake, exhaust, ECU reflash. I have run that exact combo before my SC kit. What mods do you have?
I don't doubt that you saw an inprovement with a freer flowing exhaust and possibly less restrictive intake with your bike. There are different market forces at work when your mechanicals are in clear view. However, with Porsche I have to believe when it comes to airbox design, Porsche has much better resources to attain maximum airflow. There is no benefit to restricting intake air, controlling airflow is better left to the computer. Now exhaust, as I've stated before comes under different constraints because of noise and controlling emissions so opening up that would have benefits.
On my 2001 Chevy truck they have restricted the airbox to "reduce" the
loudness of the intake.....I installed a K&N filterpak cold air kit & it is
considerably louder....I presume this was done for some governmental reason.
Hey Mitch will you bet on that? Tell you what, I'll buy an intake do a baseline dyno, then install the intake and redyno it. If it gains hp will you send me the $300? If it loses hp I'll send you $300. Sound good?
But does it have more power?
No I won't pay with dyno numbers. As we can see from the K&N dyno, the numbers can be only be trusted if it is completely independent. If you send your car to me, I can have it dyno'ed at an independent shop that I trust and if you get 23 HP, I will pay you $300.
I actually could not tell you, I forget what they claim you are supposed to get,
but I did not do any dyno runs cause.....it's a truck I drive to work, not a hot-rod by any means.......sure is loud though, lol.
The truth is, I don't want to start a fight. It's just that I've been around a while and find it hard to believe these claims about air filters for a car like a Porsche. If you are talking about replacing old technology with new, then fine. But to think that the designers wouldn't love to get an extra 23 ponies with just a simple modification which really isn't much louder (certainly not as much increase in SPL than getting the sport exhaust) than the one they are currently using is crazy.
Then again, it's only $300 so who cares?
They have indicated they will have results tomorrow. Unfortunately, they will be their results (not independant).
However, if they
really
believe in the K&N product one must wonder why they won't give a free intake to an independant rennlister for an unbiased test.
Guys, it is simple. These intakes are noise makers. Nothing more, nothing less. To get 23hp--as K&N claim--you would need to pony up $17K to get REAL hp bumps of 26hp (OEM Porsche) which REQUIRES changing internals......not the frickin airbox.
Yes it looks pretty and yes it probably sounds great, but it is the whole mindset of "it's only $300 so who cares" mentality that K&N (and Vivid, and every other dealer) are counting on to make a living $$$. I don't fault them for that, I do fault THEM for never following through with INDEPENDENT testing!
I don't think it will give you 23hp either, but if you don't think it helps at all then let's bet. You guys keep saying it doesn't do anything, and Porsche does it better. I'll bet any of you $1000 that it gives you some peak horsepower. I know what you guys are saying and probably right it won't give you 23 at the wheels but if you think you can't ever get any improvement over stock you're wrong IMHO. I would say realistically it will be between 5-7hp at the peak similar to the dyno you see, just the difference won't be so dramatic.
bowman.....all the bets that are out on the table right now are those of us that say it will NOT make 23hp. Nobody has offered a bet to say that it will not make "some" hp as you state. But 5-7 is a number that MIGHT be attained and I agree with you on that. Keep in mind as well, that it is quite possible that you might have a negative return on hp as well.
Dan has already posted K&N's DYNO (I know, not independent) somewhere, I just can't remeber which site it was on (maybe 6speed).
It showed somewhere around 20+hp at ~5500 RPM.
I agree with Dell. You have missed the point entirely. K&N (and Vivid) claim this unit will give you 23 hp. I (and others) call BS on this claim.
I didn't hear
anyone
say it won't do anything. Truthfully, I'd guess you might gain a few hp (possibly even lose a few).
If you'd like to bet, I'm in. I'll bet you $100.00 that an independent rennlister will get less than 18 hp (I'll spot you 5 hp on their claim) in a same day before and after dyno with this intake. The only change allowed is the intake (no reflash or other mods).
Whadayathink?
I think that's a good bet for you. I doubt it'll get 18hp at the wheels too. No action buddy sorry. We're on the same page with this, just be careful saying it does nothing because it's not true in my OPINION. I think we all agree on that.
I'm not taking action unless you think it won't get more than 7hp.
The thing is we need companies to keep coming out with mods for our cars because the competition drives the price down. I think K&N should be appreciated for coming to the market with a nice product for $300 instead of $600. Will it give you 23hp at the wheels, I highly doubt it but it's still a good product.
Cute......
Fact is I never posted the comment you attributed to me. I'll use your own "be careful" line on you.
"Be careful" attributing statements to others that they never made.
I really hope you're joking, just relax bro. We're all on the same team. This statement was made to WE We're on the same page with this, just be careful saying it does nothing because it's not true in my OPINION.
I wasn't singling you out. I really don't even care that much. Please just let it go
I think the real problem here is the credibility of the companies that manufacture and peddle performance products with false and misleading promises (I am not singling K&N or Vivid out).
If I go to the supermarket and pick up a dozen eggs, there should be 12 eggs in the carton. If Porsche says that my 996 makes 320hp it should make at least that. If I go to Lowe's and pick up a 15' extension cord it should not be only 10' long.
Why is that so hard??
I understand that a dyno test is not a perfect test. I realize that many factors can influence the results, but come on. The numbers that many vendors quote for a muffler, or headers, or whatever the latest and greatest power making mod is, strike me (more often than not) as being little more that pure BS. Worse yet, "we" (the consumer) usually don't hold them to their claims.
So, 23 hp from an intake???? I hope it's true because I'll be first in line if someone can independently verify that number.
Let's just say I'm not holding my breath.......
wow, i just wanted to know what Ray had on his car. This thread is crazy. After tomorrows video and dyno results, hopefully the naysayers will change there mind.
First of all, everyone needs to get this 23 hp number correctly defined in their arguments. K&N is not talking about a 23 hp increase in PEAK horsepower, they are illustrating a 23 hp increase somewhere along the rev band (in this case, around 5500 rpm). From an estimation of the dyno chart, the peak increases looks to be no more than 1/2 that if not slightly less.
Nonetheless, I do agree with you guys about measuring the product independently. The satisfaction with my bike's mods all those years ago was derived from the fact that we did before and after dynos, performed by a mechanic who was my friend. We we're both hoping that some gains were noticeable but surely didn't have a vested interest in the product. If we registered no gains, we would have tried other products...or nothing at all.
Here's another thing to bear in mind: Dyno testing is not always the great arbiter that we are seeking. Dinan did a study a while back on how temperature and air flow can dramatically alter readings on a dyno. So, at the end of the day, perhaps the best thing to focus on with CAI kits is their benefits to throttle response and the better sound. I'm just not sure we'll ever settle a HP discussion until every dissenter and doubter has one installed on their own cars and independently dyno-verified.
This guy has it at least half right. Are you guys looking at where these two points are taken? The after HP is shifted over several hundred RPM. The true gain using the before number (look directly up) is 10 hp.
The other important missing info is torque.......HP can be gained, but you might lose torque in worse places.
I could VERY WELL be wrong, but I believe you are looking at the chart incorrectly (or maybe I am), but it appears to me that the numbers are tied to the 5500 rpm mark by a straight line & the
*
&
*
are just there to call your attention to it, not to mark on the chart where the numbers are coming from (or maybe not, dunno).
ZX9 is correct. K & N is claiming 23hp increase at 5500rpm, not peak hp. the red dot points to the left at 265.98hp, the blue dot points to the right at 241.18hp.
I am suprised they did not use the HP number from 5750rpm. as stock line dips down to about 242hp, but K&N line is on the climb, at least 270hp, difference of about 28hp.
as for torque. if the K&N line is above stock line at all RPM (which K&N shows), then torque should also be higher across the board, as torque is a function of HP (hope I did get this right, my math is a little rusted).
May be K&N tested with a dirty Porsche OEM filter ?
Very interesting suspicion. Could be.
UPDATE: It very well could the be case. On reading the Dyno chart, the Stock Porsche was a model year 2003 Carrera 3.6 with 13,580 miles on the odometer. And, humidity was a little higher so maybe that impacts performance a little bit more.
OK guys...here is the skinny. We installed the kit on our 996 test car, looks great, fits great, sounds great. Outside temp is 110F right now! Our dyno room would not cool past 88. So tomorrow morning we are going to REDYNO at the same temp of 74F as our baseline we did a couple weeks ago. Here are the install pics.
Also thanks to our buddy Mitch and Champion Motorsports for doing the install on a 997. It FITS!!!
Look for dyno results tomorrow.
BTW we are sold out. Nobody has these in the country. We have another 50 pieces on order. Stay tuned!
WOOO i bought one on monday i beleive so it should be here tommorrow just wanted to thank vivid and matt for helping me out. ill be sure to write my immpressions of it once i get it on my car and test it out. i can't beleive they sold out im so happy i ordered it early. anyway thanks again vivid and matt it was great doing business with you and im going to do some more soon when i get my fabspeed muffler bypass from you guys (should be in a couple weeks.)
Is that dry charger on the filter needed? Looks like it could be restrictive and something that you could put on and take off as needed. Is this correct?
let's have a contest guessing how many HP gain Vivid will get out of it !!
I am guessing 15hp
again not peak hp gain. but highest delta between 2 graphs. as this is how all CAI company make their hp gain claim.
Man, you're thinking too hard! Buy it if you have a stock intake, I mean it's almost at Honda Civic cold air intake prices..
Changing up a bit on my post about this intake. I just went outside to look at my Evo intake by opening the rear hatch. Well when I did, the left over rain from last night flowed into the engine compartment from the lovours(sp) right into the area where the cotton intake will be with this K&N CAI. No water drips onto the intake portion of my EVO intake when I opened the lid.
WHOA!!!!
I was getting nervous there. Finally got the dyno room cool and the car running. We got 18WHP. Listen here. If you dyno the car, everyone is going to dyno differently. Unless you have a full aerodynamics testing room, the car will not get the airflow properly. So dynoing the car with the rear decklid closed and no air pushing past the intake will yield no HP or in our case gained 6hp at the wheels. Our dyno room cooled down to 77F degree and the time we started running it was 81F degrees and when we finished it was 90F degrees from the car heat. We had one huge fan cooling the radiator and one fan on the intake to simulate what driving at 70-120mph would be like. Also if your going to run the intake, REMOVE THAT STUPID black sock. Does nothing! Another very important thing to do before you dyno or expect INSTANT results is to DRIVE your car around for 1 day. Let the ECU relearn. The intakes alter air/fuel mixtures and the ECU needs to adjust. Our problem yesterday is immediately dynoing the car. Once the car had miles on it, the kit worked great. Gary who will post here later and owns the 996 said it had a great sound and butt dyno appeal. "From 4000rpm and up, the car really whaled!!!"
The test we did used the baseline from the car bone stock, with exhaust, and with exhaust and intake. We took the gain of horsepower from the car with the exhaust to the gain with the exhaust and intake. That was 18whp. The addition of the Agency Power exhaust system and the K&N intake kit was almost 30WHP. Its on the dyno, LOOK! I expect there to be naysayers, but all we did was dyno the car like we dyno any car. K&N showed a number, we did a number that was respectable.
If you have a 997, this kit was designed on a 996, however the setup is the same. I have heard a couple of guys getting CEL. Please PULL THE CODE and find out what code it is. You might just need to reset your ECU!!!! If you have problems or would like to discuss the intake, please call me anytime, or email me and I will call you back!
Overall this is as about independent as you get. I think this intake is a huge success. Not everyone will agree, but the results prove themselves.
Thanks!
It would have been nice to see a baseline dyno and a CAI only dyno to REALLY see what the CAI does on it's own. Adding the exhaust introduces a 3rd variable for which you CANNOT just subtract exhaust/CAI and exhaust only to claim 18hp for the CAI only. That is what we call a mediating variable in the stats world.
Dan, possible to explain 3 things for us (1) What happens to the OEM intake? Looks like it is maybe capped or something? .....and....... (2) How is the CAI protected inside the bay with the lid DOWN from all the engine heat? .....and.....(3) Please explain how the CAI gets its cold air? I don't see how the filter is receiving it.
I will say this, it sure is a beuatiful unit but just pics and hp claims don't do it for me. I need for engineering and explanation for me to jump.
Hey Dell,
From looking at pictures of the K&N CAI uninstalled, (2) the air filter sits inside a little compartment (like a box) that is isolated from the engine. There is a slit in the left port to allow for the oil filler tube to sit flush, but in so doing, it completely seals the 'box'.
(3) The CAI gets cold air the same way that the stock airbox does...via the air snorkel to the engine deck lid. I think what makes these cold air intakes more efficient is that they use the 360 degree intake, NOT that they are getting air which is any colder than the stock box.
Incidentally, the stock box also utilizes a muffling mechanism to mitiage any sound, which may or may not impact performance and flow just like restricted exhausts. The design of both the EVO and K&N look equally efficient, though I love the 'look' of the K&N unit. However, the EVO looks like it would be better protected from the elements since it doesn't sit under the engine compartment fan. in the event of rain.
However, I hear you on the exhaust. I think that a new freer flowing exhaust AND the CAI in conjunction are required. I'm ready to jump.
One more thing: it looks like EVO uses a K&N filter in their product; I noticed that their cleaning solutions for the filter are made by K&N.
One quick question: if you could remove the muffling mechanism from the stock airbox, wouldn't a K&N or BMC filter in place of the paper filter work just as well?
Does not matter about the exhaust. You are looking at the difference. The dyno with the exhaust is the baseline. Adding the intake is your variable. I added in the original bone stock baseline so you could see the stock, test run, and then the combo of intake and exhaust.
With the lid shut, there is a trim and shield that seals the filter into place.
EVO filter is not K&N, it might look like one but is not a K&N part number to my knowledge.
Using a flatpanel will not yield those results.
BTW since these are sold out, I expect K&N to have more in 4 weeks. We have more on order. I also expect to get atleast 3-4 returned from people not able to install or just plain dont want them. So I suggest you order online at
www.vividracing.com
.
If I get any used ones from people thinking they dont work, I will sell them cheap.
It was my car used for the testing. My expectations were even lower than LVDell's. Like I've said in previous posts, I had no plans to mod my car for hp. PSS9s and sticky tires were enough for me. When I answered Dan's ad for a test car, my idea was to have a fun time, check out some new products, meet some other Porsche nuts. Well I acheived all that & wound up buying the mufflers and intake. The sound of the car is totally transformed from stock. Some of you saw the clip of the car with just the mufflers. Now with the intake I'll put it this way.....it's 110 deg in Phoenix and this fool lowers his windows everytime I approach an overpass. Butt dyno correlates with 27hp gain (mufflers & intake). Ear dyno says more like +50
I think the left side of the torque curve (blue) is the most telling. @3K RPM the contribution of the muffler is minimal, but the intake shows ~18 ft-lbs gain.
Intake made a good improvement on TQ and HP. Not much more to say, Gary was right there the whole time. Gary and I both thought it would not do nothing, but it did!!!
Gary - I had a great time with both projects, let me know when the next event is your going to!
Yeah, you guys are misreading the chart (I work with heavy machinery performance charts all day long so I know what I'm looking at
). They are misrepresenting the product with this chart.
looks like the biggest improvement comes at 5781rpm, it looks like there is a 27 hp improvement !!! torque also shows 27ft/lbs improvement at same rpm.
K&N is also making more torque at 3800rpm than before at all rpm. so mid range drivability should be better.
this is more than what K&N claims. I am guessing it is due to the exhaust. with it, CAI helps even more.
very impressive !!!
Rant on.
How are they misreading the chart? And moreover, how are they misrepresenting the product? Using a freer flowing exhaust with the freer flowing intake is the key. It made sense before, and now it makes more sense.
You guys all think Porsche is God. Since they designed it, they designed the car to the max possible. Wrong. They have to deal with regulations on noise and emissions the world and states over. Besides ,if the car was such a gem stock, then why does Porsche mod the hell out of it for racing? With all things, there is trade-off with total performance (louder, rougher), longevity and driveability (quieter, smoother, etc).
Dan is a salesman, sure, but he also wants to sell the best product. Not everyone out there is a scheister. Some guys have fun with this and get excited about modding same as us. And without a doubt, Gary, a impartial party (with the exception of wanting more ponies) was there. If you had been there and seen the changes, you'd be lauding the product instead of looking for inconsistencies everywhere. And as I've said before, Honda's R&D budget could take Porsche to the cleaners and back, but their products (motorcycles) had proven gains when increase air flow in and out.
What is so shocking about this notion? I mean, Porsche also puts in a speed governor. Are you naysayers going to now tell me that no product could offer faster speed because Porsche designed it the best way possible (read, the governor is clearly a regulatory artifact). What about Smart and Remote Top? Porsche didn't design those? I guess they don't add value either. I mean the list of aftermarket, third party mods goes on and on.
Here's a real test: any naysayer out there should buy any product they think is bunk that alternative parties have posted dynos of and go and buy it, install it, and test it yourself before and after. Dan has proven a good guy; he'll take the product back no questions asked (or so he said) if you don't like it.
Why don't you guys show us YOUR proof claiming that it adds no benefit?
Rant over.
I agree with most of what you are saying, I think the product is a great value, just be careful opening the engine compartment after rain and car washing.
I've learned in my past 10yrs of car clubs that the people who complain the most don't even have the product and rely on more ancedotal claims against the product than those who are for the product.
I also agree with the whole "porsche is god" statements I see on this board, yet folks will purchase exhaust systems that do nothing but add sound then complain that it doesn't sound like a porsche. This Pcar world is very of odd to me.
What he said. There's a crapload of additional torque across the range. This is a no brainer. The best bang for the buck I've ever seen (Porsche NA-wise). Can't see how the exhaust would skew things much at 3000 rpm. This with muffler bybass pipes and... look out.
so i got mine in yesterday and installed it. all i have to say the noise is amazing, its almost deafing how loud this car gets. i listen to techno and was blasting all the way up and it cgot completly muted by the engine noise. it is more responsive and i can't say its faster yet since i really still haven't gunned it. anyway a few question. 1. my cel came one should i just clear the code or what? 2. my car made this werid sucking nosie before but only when i was cruising at like 2k rpm for a constant time (in parking lot or something like that) now it does it sometimes when im standing still. should i be worried or not really? anyway before i forget build quality is awsome and thanks vivid for the deal and pleasure doing businness with you guys.
I love my new intake. It was a PITA install. I had trouble with the air duct. It was not lining up and would make the heat shield hit the belt tensioner. The sound at 4k is sick. No CEL(knock on wood) I feel she is fasterand more responsive. Now I'm researching the exhaust and headers options. I have read to many contridictory statements. Are headers worth it? Which exhaust is the best?
I just installed my this morning and I agree...the sounds is awesome!! Same problem with the air duct and the heat shield touching the pulley on heavy acceleration. I ended up adding one more mount on the bottom side the air intake to the K&N "box" and it seems as though its a little more stable now....but the sounds is great!!!
So I am not the only one. I used two oversize washers connecting the airduct to the box, but this morning heavy on first gear I heard it again.
Where did you put the extra prop under the box?
I actually did two things....I added a bolt at the botton of the oem air intake (you'll see a black colored nut in the picture at the botton of the intake.
I also added a bracket to hold the other side...its a little too flexible in my mind and it could be that the whole box flexes there during hard acceleration. None the less, not sure which "fix" ended up making things right, but no sounds on hard acceleration now...except for the GHL exhausts!!!!
LEt me know if you need anymore info...seems like a miss on K&N's part of not adding that other bracket to the left side of the box!
what should i listen for to make sure mine isn't touching the belt. i haven't heard anything werid so im not sure if it is but maybe im not sure what i should be listening for.
Interesting test.
Unfortunately, it is a test of the intake AND a muffler. Not an intake only. Additionally, it sounds like the intake test was run with the decklid open!?! Was the baseline run with the decklid open? (With the decklid closed a 6 hp gain was reported).
I have not seen the product up close, however the seal around the airbox seems fundamentally flawed as the space around the oil filler tube and the bend in the intake tube is obviously not sealed. That space it appears would only draw heated air from the engine bay.
Finally, having a re-seller run the test is far from un-biased. I'd love to see an independent test with the intake only and a better control of the test variables.
At this point I'm leaning toward putting the EVO unit in my car as it seems to be a higher quality piece with a better integrated design.
As if this thread isn't long enough yet...I'll chime in late to the party.
First...it's been determined that the sound is nearly worth the price of admission in itself.
Second: after installing the heat sheild on the intake isn't bad...but I'm going to modify mine some to see if I can get a true seal with the lid of the trunk lid of the car. The edging that comes with the kit just doesn't extend far enough upward to go all the way to the lid...but it's close. Question...if the fan on the rear trunk of the car is removed what are the implications? I'm thinking that without it there you could really take advantage of the intake and get it to seal with additional opening in the lid.
My imressions....lots of noise in 1st and 2nd but no apparent HP increase. I swear however that once you get moving near the top of 3rd gear 75+ that it feels like it pulls harder. I was going to do before and after HP readings with the G-tech on 3rd gear pulls but my brother has found it convenient to lend out the G-tech so I have yet to do so. The good news is once you get the heat sheild all assembled and installed once you can go back to the stock box within 15 minutes...so I may still be able to do my own test. I think the intake has some benefit at speed...again I think and don't know at this point.
Andy
Got mine on late Saturday night. Directions could have been a little bit clearer but it all worked out OK except I don't know if those 2 bolts holding the stock intake snorkel will stand the test of time. I might add the additional bolt as wlee69 did when I get a chance.
As for performance...I like it. I had recently put on the GHL Louds (which I also love) but they seemed to have reduced throttle response in the lower ranges while adding it to the top end. Now it just may be my imagination, but with the new intake I have smoother and even quicker throttle response throughout the full RPM range. The one downside is that I am killing my gas mileage and have been playing a little too much chicken with the redline
I guess it's time to get chipped and really enjoy the benefits of these two mods.
Jeff
I read through every last post and its good to see that the intake did add a few ponies. Maybe once vivid has them in stock again I will take the plunge.
You can use a OBDII scan tool. If you dont have one, you can disconnect the negative battery terminal and cycle the key. But you should have the code pulled to know what it was. Good be something non related to the intake???
Hello everyone.
This will be my first post , but I have been lurking in the back ground for some time.
I had just finished a conversation with a very reputable P mechanic, in reference to K&N.
He had mentioned that as a side effect of K&N, is that it will allow oil to build up (clog) a MAF sensor and trigger a CEL.
This might be an early warning signal, but worth examining further.
PS. I would think K&N had done testing of this set up prior to release,
MAF are pretty costly.
oh god... that "Knowledgable" P Mechanic obviously does not know much. the CEL that these guys are occuring immediately is not from the build up. This would take time and a enduser over oiling his filter. Really weird that all intakes use this same design and that is never the problem. Anytime a MAF goes bad from oil is not from the filter. Go read oiling instructions and information at
www.knfilters.com
. Get the facts.
Does not matter if it is a EVO, K&N, AEM, Injen or whatever. This is how they work.
c43
Um, yes you need to scan it. Maintenance has nothing to do with it. You could have not tighten the gas cap all the way. You need to find out the code. You might have put the MAF in backwards. Several variables.
Vivid .. I agree.
Oiling or over oiling would cause the problem for air mass meter.
I did not mean to apply to K&N only.
I hope it makes makes gobs of power as I would surely purchase one myself.
As a side note suggestion, why not offer a second replacement air filter to allow the first one to "cure" properly.
