Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

49 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This guy needed more sound and actually it's probably what I would do instead on an exhaust on a 996. You loose 45 pounds and just go to a bypass pipe from Fabspeed, which is cheap. I can't remember what type of blue this is but nonetheless it's close to that RuF baby blue.... Nice cab but now it's a LOT louder. It's been a while since we did the bypass pipes.

POST 2Original post

Nice, I've always wanted to hear how "loud" bypass pipes actually are.... Any sound clips?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's got a distinct rumble upon start up but then settles down pretty quickly. It's actually not bad when putting around.. then when you get on it's cetainly loud I wanted to get a clip of it today but sadly didn't get a chance and the car is gone. It'll be back some point or next time we do one I'll get a clip- promise!

POST 5Original post

how cheap is cheap and would you recommend this as a viable alternative to a Porsche sports exhaust or every dya use

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll get some for ya soon...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They're 550 for the pair so cheaper than an exhaust However, I would say you really need to listen and drive a car in person. I don't think they're for "everyday" personally

POST 9Original post

oh LORDY Jim. you do wear earplugs when you go racing right? how is your HP/torque curves with the open exhaust? looks like you need some equal length headers

POST 10Original post

Hey Carlos, Yep, earplugs are required. It sounds great though. I actually gained 13 hp and similar torque when I went from a setup like Sharkeys to straight pipes. All the power is above 5000. Below that the car just dies. That's ok for racing most of the time. You probably can't tell in the picture but I have Supertrapps so I can add backpressure if I am at a track where I need it. I've wondered about some different headers. These are the ones that come with the X51 package. I should probably try a set of equal length. Jim

POST 11Original post

hey jim, i did notice the flanges for the the supertrapps. i may have to do a similar setup for tracks like laguna seca and sears point or any tracks that are within earshot of civilization. button willow and thunderhill are in BF egypt and you can run pretty much open. your headers look like standard 996 fare. mine are sitting in the corner of the garage.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hehe very cool indeed (but you NEED headers) . I also run 5 inch straight pipes off of the turbos on my 996TT so I know where you are coming from.. I'll post pix. It's UGLY!

POST 13Original post

Those X51 headers look pretty nice to me. I don't think you'd get too much more pull-through exhaust scavenging considering how short the rest of your exhaust is. Look at the crap Porsche sticks us Boxsters with...

POST 14Original post

Yeah, if anyone has pictures of the X51 headers, I'd love to see them. Indeed, can you buy the X51 headers separately from the whole package?

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I should show you a pic of the stock 997S headers.. those are a joke!

POST 16Original post

What I don't get is why are the Fabspeed pipes so much? I mean (and I own them) all they are is a 90 degree bent pipe with tips. Why doesn't someone else mandrel bend some stainless pipe and sell them for say $100 a set without tips (which could be mounted seperately)

POST 17Original post

supply and demand.. right now they have the monopoly.. who else makes them?

POST 18Original post

That's my question. I can imagine that any good muffler shop could make them although I went to my local shop and they said they can't get that bend in stainless without kinking the pipe so maybe there is more than meets the eye but I wish someone here would chime in with a cheap alternative!

POST 19Original post

Does anyone here in the Chicago area have these?? If so PM me, I'd love to come out and hear your car!!!!

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mitch, I know what you're saying. I dont make them but.. if I had to harbor a guess I'd say the Tips (which are nice btw) are most of it? Shrug...

POST 21Original post

These are the headers that came with the x51 kit. If they are not the right one, I need to find someone to yell at. Maybe we could get a 40th owner to take a pic.

POST 22Original post

Alex, Different headers might have some impact. Right now I'm working on a mod that varies backpressure with rpm. Now that would be an advantage. Jim

POST 24Original post

What's the diameter of the 996 exhaust? It looks like 2 1/8". I think I might have a relatively inexpensive, but nice solution. Depends on the diameter though.

POST 26Original post

Yeah, I know about that route. I'm talking about 304 stainless mandrel bends and tips from Borla. It's about $200 if I can get the 2 1/4" to work. Get the ends swaged down or something of the like.

POST 27Original post

I really want to hear this set up...... Is there any way some one could take a quick vid? Thanks!!

POST 28Original post

If I understand correctly you could lose hp at lower RPMs due to a lack of backpressure? Is that correct? Has anyone done a before and after dyno with the these?

POST 30Original post

Just go here www.fabspeed.com They have a video.

POST 31Original post

I think Tq would be more in question than HP........ I would think you would gain HP at @ high RPM ***** Just read on their site that you get marginal gains...... 1-2 HP and a couple FP as well

POST 32Original post

FWIW, JimB is running a straight thru exhaust i think any loss in torque you gain back in better handling. 50 lbs less from the rear would be much better at the track.

POST 33Original post

I haven't dynoed the car but there are three of us 996's that run together at the track and two of us have the bypass pipes and we definately pull the third guy with his stock exhaust. Now we have put in "Pep pipes" and will know if that does anything at 48 Hours. I let you know.

POST 34Original post

Carlos, We're going to dyno the car on Wednesday at a few different levels of backpressure. It should be interesting. Mitch, Are you racing or doing the DE at Sebring? Either way, look me up. I'll be in the loud black 996. Jim

POST 35Original post

I only do DE. I tried racing but it took some of the fun out of it for me and emptied my wallet at the same time!

POST 36Original post

Jim, Please post your results! What are you using to increase backpressure?

POST 37Original post

i'd be interested in this since, i really can't justify paying the amount that fabspeed wants....not much really involved in them.....anyone know what the radius of that 90degree bend is, if so i can look into some options too.

POST 38Original post

I don't think it matters what the bend is, what is important is the inside and outside diameter. Look at the Fabspeed, it is a nice, but WAAAY overpriced, pipe.

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Eh speaking on 50 pounds extra... holy heavy and SERIOUS cage-batman... Arrived yesterday. That's some series hardware...

POST 40Original post

my gawd, how am i gonna offset the weight of the cage AND the supercharger?!?!

POST 41Original post

how can the bypass pipes be street legal if they do not have mufflers on them?

POST 43Original post

so is there any truth to this i hear about the bypass pipes causing premature failure of the cats.... the only thing i can think of is the reduced back pressure causes damage to the cats, but thats just an attempt to find a cause to a supposed problem.....

POST 44Original post

what is the loudest exhaust for the 996 c2? I want something to wake up my neighbors and enough power to feel it.

POST 45Original post

STRASPEC - the bypass pipes will wake up your neighbors - by far your loudest option, but feeling any difference in hp is doubtful from any change in exhaust only.

POST 47Original post

I'll tell you this. On the track, we have done side by side comparisons of the bypass pipes vs. the stock Porsche exhaust. The bypass pipes are faster down the straights than the stock mufflers. No doubt. Now, this is wide open, high revving comparisons and so may not apply to street performance unless this is how you drive. And we used the same car for both applications and compared acceleration to a baseline car.

POST 48Original post

I don't have the data in front of me but it worked out about the way I expected. With restriction we gained a significant amount of torque from the start of the run up to 4700. From that point on the open pipes steadily gained both hp and torque peaking at 17 more hp and a similar amount of torque with the open pipes. The restriction was added by adding 16 Supertrapp plates which may not have been the most efficient but I still think the results are directionally correct. I may make a run with cats on someday when I have some time to see how they compare to the Supertrapps although I can't see adding all that weight back on the car. We plan to run with open exhaust and focus on keeping the revs up for now. Jim

POST 49Original post

I wish I could hear the bypass pipes, anyone in OC, So. Cal w/ these things?
