The reason I am not jumping up and down to get the Adam suggested MAF is because I am not sure my issue is the MAF.

I then cleaned the MAF and reconnected it, I had to clear the codes caused by NO MAF connection since I drove the car for 2 days looking at the CEL and the annoying computer nagging me to take the car to the workshop.

I just installed a Bosche part that I bought from Rock Auto for about $150ish, AND MAN O' MAN, the car has never run smoother or quicker!

On this part I found a "mint mark" which is that molded in dial with 12 numbers around the circumference and an arrow with the year in the middle, you can check your MAF's and see when the plastic housing was molded by looking at the mint mark.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

it loose like the 03 Carrera needs a new air mass meter sensor, the PN I was given for this car is 986-606-125-02. I know these are expensive as having some experience with them on my boxter, so I was expecting a $250.00 hit. but all I can find online after a short search is just north of $500.00 for a genuine Porsche part.
Does anybody out there have a source for this part that is not a counterfeit, or used, or made in china that is a little more reasonable?
Thanks for the inputs.
X-man
You can also use the Bosch part finder to get part number(s) for 996 products, then search Amazon and your other favorite online resellers for the part number(s) you need. If Bosch offers a remanufactured version of an OEM part, the part finder will list it.
MAF(s) are listed under "Air Management Sensors."
Bonus: If you buy it in a Bosch box, it comes with a limited lifetime warranty. I do not know if this is true if you buy it from the Porsche parts counter in a Porsche box.
The only other one I see in your link is a Bremi which I wouldn't consider
generic
. Bremi is a German company that's been around a hundred years and is OEM to Rolls Royce, Audi, BMW, Fiat, Rover, Volkswagen and others. All the Bremi parts I've bought have been made in Germany but at $106 for that MAF sensor, they may be the latest company to add Chinese production to their line.
Also, it looks Amazon has a Bosch version for $155.
I just installed a Bosche part that I bought from Rock Auto for about $150ish, AND MAN O' MAN, the car has never run smoother or quicker! It idles smoother and most noticeably, it drives under part throttle MUCH better. It used to surge and just not pull evenly. I though it was variable cam timing changing, but then a CEL code came on, I replaced the sensor in like 2 minutes, and BAM! Runs better than ever and I do mean ever! Best $150 I ever spent. Hell, I'd spend $500 to have it run like this.
Adam, I do have a lot of the issues you mention in your response. do you have the link to the part you bought? I pulled the MAF this afternoon. The markings on the part are as follows: BOSCH 0 280 218 055
986.606.125.01
Made in Germany
816( with a circle around it)
381 18 1A
the mint mark molded into the plastic was month 12, year 02. I believe this is the original MAF that came with the car in 2003.
Adam, I would like to try the part you got from Rock Auto , is the part you bought the same one as I have listed here?
Thanks,
This is what I bought. I didn't have a Rock Auto coupon handy, but you can usually find 5% off.
And it was identical to the one that was in there, which I assume was replaced at some point in its 20 year history before finding a home in my garage.
(You'll need a torx bit with the hollow tip. T20 as I recall.)

The new one is on the right with the box next to it:
Ok, my bosch part number is slightly different, its 0 280 218 055, that part is 150.00 there. much cheaper than the 525.00 that suncoast porsche wanted. I also found out this part 986.606.125.01 has been updated, the newest latest part is 986.606.125.02. this explains why my service writer at the dealer told me the part number is .02, but when I pull the part out it is a .01.
On this part I found a "mint mark" which is that molded in dial with 12 numbers around the circumference and an arrow with the year in the middle, you can check your MAF's and see when the plastic housing was molded by looking at the mint mark. This mark is common on many commercial products. my MAF in the car is month 12, year 02.... so I believe this is the original MAF that came with the car in 03.
I book marked the link, thanks Adam!! I have some CRC MAF cleaner coming next week, will try cleaning the one I have to see if that does anything, worth a try for 12.00 shipped.
You're welcome. But I'm telling you, for the increase in overall performance, to me it's not worth cleaning/putting off the new sensor. But I paid $150 to my door, not $500.
Interesting. A few days ago I stopped for a covfefe and when I refired up the glorious 3.4L H-6 with electronic fuel injection and VARIOCAM, the idle hunted for a couple minutes.
Think it's the MAF?
The reason I am not jumping up and down to get the Adam suggested MAF is because I am not sure my issue is the MAF. My car has been doing weird stuff for the past month. starting with the snowflake button being a no-go on first start up of the car... (I have a thread on that and have not found a resolution, yet). Lately the car has not wanted to idle, it will hunt, the generator light will come on then it dies, a restart and those issues seem to be gone but rough idle remains, give it some gas the snowflake switch will work and it will run. I unplug the MAF wire to the sensor and 99% of those problems go away. car will start, idles ok, and runs fine, not wonderful like Adam is saying.. I don't know if I have ever had this car run like Adam says.. the OEM part is a .02 part number at the end, they updated it recently. OEM part is just north of 500.00. but it has bosch markings on it.. so I am still in the get more data mode. Garrett, IF you change the MAF and your car is back to normal, let me know...
yep, the MAF if its an issue is not the only one. the spoiler malfunction light came on today on my way home. hasnt done that in a while. I had the battery checked during the snowflake issue I am currently having, interstate told me battery was fine. I am not sure how to check the charging system, so I will have to research that. my dealer has not been much help with this. he fixed the broken window, new regulator that was expensive.
What? Is this your first car?
Any big name auto parts store can/will check your charging system for free. I'm not familiar with how Interstate operates but they should be able to do the same and should have (unless they just had your battery without the car there).
No, its not my first car. the last time I had charging issues was with a 1970 Toyota Corona MK II back in the 70's. on that car when it failed, it was detectable and easily replaced. It had a separate voltage regulator too that was easy to locate and replace, and I had to replace that as well back in the day.
haven't had charging issues since on anything I have been driving since then... The voltmeter on the dash at startup will sometimes vary a lot... then it stabilizes out and sits at 13.5 to 13.9V as read on the dash voltmeter, and I did take a measure at the battery which matched to the precision of the meter I was using. the bizarre behavior is only at startup. This is why checking the battery or charge system reveals nothing, whatever is happening is intermittent and only present at certain times mostly at first startup. some weeks ago posters on this forum suggested battery or charge system. the car has an interstate battery with the vent tube. I took it to a interstate battery service center in Phx, they tested the battery and said it was OK. that is all I got... just a verbal OK, no data, no printout, nothing. I do now know what they did since they took the car to the back of the facility..
now on to yesterdays progress with the MAF. I went to autozone and bought a can of CRC spray MAF cleaner, took out the existing unit on my car which I believe is the original MAF from 2003 (based on the mold mark date clock). I sprayed it pretty good following the instructions on the can, interestingly the parts inside the openings of the MAF are silver, not black... so the spray changed the color of the sensor components. I air dried the unit and reinstalled. hooked it up and cleared the codes with my acton code reader. started it up and it seemed to be fine, I took it on two short drives so far, and idle is good, and the car seems to run good too. Of course I need more drive data to see if the improvement is permanent or just a blib in the space time continuum. I got it up to speed and the spoiler worked as designed, no light. This car is a TIP transmission. I do have a couple of MAF sensors coming in the mail, so I can try them as well. if I can get this car to fail and stay failing, I can get it fixed. this is the issue.
The saga with the 03 carrera is far from over, but right now it seems to be "fixed". the snowflake issue is still there, but goes away if you rev the car after start up. if its a charging issue, then its intermittent and as such very hard to diagnose. I will look into having the charging system checked at the auto parts store...
Bill, I have 2 threads going on with this car at the same time. one is the snowflake issue, and the other is the MAF. Going back to the beginning of my troubles. It all started with the snowflake issue. I determined the battery was not getting a good charge and was charging the battery at night, and that really helped the situation. On 9/10/19 while on my commute home, 110F sitting at a very long light I got the P0174 code, which is Bank 2 system too lean. I got home and read the code, recorded it and cleared it out. My service writer suggested I pull the plug to the MAF and see if that did anything. After figuring out where the MAF is I managed to get that out with some help from the Wayne Dempsey book. I had to remove the sensor to figure out how to get that plug off. I drove the car 2 days with no MAF wire connection. the car seemed to idle smooth, and drive fine. I then found out an OEM MAF sensor is over 500.00... hence the start of this thread.... I then cleaned the MAF and reconnected it, I had to clear the codes caused by NO MAF connection since I drove the car for 2 days looking at the CEL and the annoying computer nagging me to take the car to the workshop. the codes I got with the MAF disconnected are:
P0102 MOD $11, Mass or Volume Air Flow A Circuit Low
P0112 MOD $11, Intake Air Temp Sensor 1 Circuit Low input.
I ordered a new voltage regulator, will replace that part on the alternator when it arrives and report back. The dealer is NO HELP on any of this. I now fully understand why the previous owner traded in this car!!
