Suggestion
Don’t forget to turn the heater on high to get the air out of that part of the system as you run the engine and fill the reservoir.

Suggestion
If this doesn't work, your best bet would be to drain the system and re-fill with a vacuum filler.

Suggestion
#3 - You should really be changing your coolant every 24 - 36 months, so the cost of the "airlift" vacuum tool will pay for itself rather quickly (you can use it on your other cars as well - it's not Porsche specific).

*if it's not worth the hassle, just pay the dealer/shop - in my case, it's a matter of trust (I just rather do it myself, and not worry whether they did it correctly - or even at all- or used the right stuff etc...).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

02 996 cab 130k. Think I had a little coolant leak but I added coolant and then the light comes on "Low Coolant" and the red light on the gauge flashes. The car did not overheat. I checked the coolant level and it was fine. Not sure what to do next.
Is there a procedural on burping these cars?
Pull the wire bale up on the "burp cap" and leave it that way while running the engine. When the thermostat opens and starts to circulate coolant, keep filling the expansion tank - the air bubble should work it's way out. If this doesn't work, your best bet would be to drain the system and re-fill with a vacuum filler.
Thanks man. Because I don't know who old the coolant is in this car I think that I will go ahead and change all of it. Never heard of a vacuum filler. Where can I get one? Can I use a shop vac instead?
Post #1 and #15 tell you everything you need to know:

This should be one of the top tips for any car with a large capacity cooling system.
You will need an air compressor capable of pulling enough vacuum for the siphon effect to work.
Here's the airlift unit I bought. Not cheap - but worth it, in my opinion.

LOL- this was my original reply to c didy, because I didn't read--- Never open the cap until it's cooled off. It's still pressurized and will blow extremely hot coolant as soon as you remove the lid. Think of it like the top to a plain old school radiator.
To answer your question, I started it cold with the cap off. Flipped that cool burp switch up and added coolant as it was warming up until full.
I got a quote of $200 including parts and labor. They have the right equipment, this is one that I'll pass on. Thanks for the help.
The coolant is circulating in the heater core at all times, regardless of the setting. Cabin temperature is regulated by the infamous foam throwing flaps.
Lol, they want $60.00 here in Hawaii. I didn't bother to ask if it was pre-mix or concentrate. Porsche brand coolant is not the only option for our 996's.
#1 - don't open the cap when the engine is "up to temp" it's pressurized when hot and will push steam and hot coolant out of the opening...
#2 - you can start the engine with the filler cap open and fill as necessary when the fluid level starts to drop (when the thermostat opens) - the problem with this technique is that it's not good to let the car sit and idle (maybe take it for a quick spin around the block?) - just don't let the temp get too high, and make sure you coolant level doesn't get too low.
#3 - You should really be changing your coolant every 24 - 36 months, so the cost of the "airlift" vacuum tool will pay for itself rather quickly (you can use it on your other cars as well - it's not Porsche specific).
#4 - The Porsche coolant is $40 - $50/gal, but you cut it 50/50 with water so actual cost is only $20-$25/gal. Every 2-3 years, this shouldn't break the bank... especially if you consider what a dealer/shop will charge you*
