Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

Can try cleaning the wheel with diluted APC and a scrub brush (not too hard though) to lift those oils out of the leather, but chances are you'll start pulling the dye out with it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car (2002, metropol blue) seems to have peeling on the steering wheel. It is stitched, like you would expect with leather, but the peeling makes me think some kind of vinyl? I have the build sheet, and this does not have the optional leather wheel, just the standard 3 spoke, but I found a listing for the same wheel part number on ebay that describes it as leather. Is it leather, and this is some kind of topcoat that is peeling?

POST 2Original post

All modern leathers are a base leather then dyed the color, then a clear coat kind of thing on top. Most of the time on steering wheels the clear gets worn through, then the color dye wears off exposing the base leather. Though sounds like in your case the clear is cracking off. Best bet is to have it recovered if can source someone who has the blue leather. That's what I did on my car and love it. $450, much cheaper than the OEM replacement.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2 things: 1 - any harm in me just stripping all this clear and moving on as is? Beneath the peeling is a nice feeling and nice looking matte finish, which frankly I prefer to the gloss that is everywhere that hasn't worn though. 2 - in the parts catalog is a much more expensive wheel that is associated with a leather steering wheel option. What's that about, just a more premium leather?

POST 4Original post

Trying to strip it will result in just rubbing the dye colour right off. You can see in my picture comparing the two where it started happening on the OEM wheel. The gloss appearance is from 20 years of body oils, sweat, dirt, grime, etc built up. Can try cleaning the wheel with diluted APC and a scrub brush (not too hard though) to lift those oils out of the leather, but chances are you'll start pulling the dye out with it. I bet the upgraded wheel was either the 3 spoke of the carbon techart one
