I brought the car in for repair thinking it was the second gear synchro, but the tech says it's the clutch.

Yes i did on my 04, it was doing the exact same thing, grinding on downshifting at high RPM, It is a bad synchro..When mine was changed Porsche just replaced the tranny, No one was rebuilding them then.

Suggestion
you'd replace the clutch anyway if you had to replace your tranny so it would be a good place to start, in regard to the miles on your car...i can't remember if you mentioned you had a warranty...grinding during shifting will only be the beginning symptoms of a bad tranny...sorry, if its your tranny b/c w/o warranty your looking at a big bill (~10,000)

Suggestion
i think its your tranny but a bad release lever could be the cause as well...definitely doesn't need a clutch (no slipping)...i'd replace the clutch at this point anyway and the clutch release lever while it's out...its close to time on the clutch anyway (29,000 miles), and a release lever shouldn't be more than 50 bucks...make sure you replace the pilot bearing too...if all that doesn't remedy it - then its definitely your tranny.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My transmission is grinding, but only while downshifting to second gear from high rpms. I brought the car in for repair thinking it was the second gear synchro, but the tech says it's the clutch. The only problem is that my clutch pulls strong in all gears, I can even scratch all four tires (it's a 375hp c4s) without a hint of clutch slip (or smell).
So I need to know.
Is there such a thing as a clutch problem that only grinds second gear while downshifting from high rpms?
I am dealing with Stevens Creek Porsche, in San Jose, California.
I have used this dealership over a 20 year period with 6 different Porsches.
The dealership is top notch and everyone is very professional, but...
They once misdiagnosed a stall problem (due to a lightweight RS flywheel in a C2) that cost me several thousand dollars, so I'm a little gun shy.
A clutch that doesn't release properly will do that. Should be noticable going into reverse in the driveway. Otherwise, if it's just 2nd gear, sounds more like a synchro is shot.

One of the first things I learned in Racing School was brake pads are a lot cheaper than engine/tranny parts. There's no reason you should be downshifting to slow down IMHO.
29K IS ABOUT THE NORMAL MIALGE IN CARS THAT COME IN IN NEED OF A CLUTCH.
some have 100k o na factory clutch others need a clutch every 100 miles all depend on whos driving
Don't trust Stevens Creek. They've changed ownership and all their technician are now different. Try Carlsen instead. Ask for Brian's help. He's on this board.
Kevin: I started with the X51 option. This is a very expensive option for only 25 hp (you would be better off with the 425hp supercharger offered by EVO Motorsporst, it's about $8K when you buy with a group and another $4k to install). If you allready have an X51, Powerchip offers a 360hp chip for the X51 engine. And you can squeeze an additional 15hp with the EVO intake (don't get K&N, it's crap) and the MaxFlow exhaust (don't get B&B, it's crap). Sport cats could probably add anopther 5hp, but I'm happy with the performance and the sound. Unfortunately, my last car was a 993TT, so 375hp is a minimum for my somewhat jaded enthusiasm.
