My guess is a segment of your original pipe got damaged before and instead of replacing the whole long pipe, someone cut out the damaged section and replaced it with a 3" rubber hose.

Was going to say go to a porsche breaker, seeing parts still on the car can be a big help, I sometimes used to go down to mine to look at assembled parts to remember where stuff went aswel as getting cheap original parts, I had to get a full set of rubber hoses as mine were contaminated , would have cost a lot for new but I get good used ones quite cheap!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Need help to identify the part on the attached picture. There is no part number punched on it. Porsche dealer is not able to correctly identify the part as they are telling me it doesn't seem to be an original 996 2002 part. It looks like an original part to me. They ordered a few times the wrong parts and I had to returned them. Last piece of hose received today from a special order in Germany was 996.106.720.02 but once again this is the wrong part. This aluminum hose is part of the cooling system my 996 Carrera 2 2002 and is leaking since something rubbed it and perforated the tube. This hose is forward of the rear axle on the passenger side. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide Pierre

POST 2Original post

If you can't identify it I would just take it to a weld shop and let them repair it. It is probably cheaper.

POST 3Original post

Something strange about your pipe. I have a 2002 C2 in my garage with the engine removed so I could see all the coolant pipes clearly. The only aluminum coolant pipe on the passenger (right) side of the car below the right rear seat is a very long pipe, part #4 here http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=105-05 99610661074 https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...e/99610661074/ Is your car a left hand drive?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your reply. My car is a left hand drive so the hose is on the right side (passenger). I tried to compare the hose you've indicated in your reply (on site ECSTuning) by flipping around my picture. It is remotely similar if I put my picture upside down and compare with the far end of the picture shown on the Web site. Looks like mine may have been fabricated with a portion of that hose from that hose ... but I don't understand why. My Hose was connected to another aluminium hose right above the half shaft ... in between these two hoses there was a small rubber hose about 3 insches long ... that's were my problem started ... a small leak that is now a part chasing trying to figure out what the heck happened in the past with this tubing. Thanks Pierre

My guess is a segment of your original pipe got damaged before and instead of replacing the whole long pipe, someone cut out the damaged section and replaced it with a 3" rubber hose. I bet you that hose is not a Porsche part. I think replacing the whole pipe makes sense as it's not expensive and it will also fix the leak for good. You need to make sure the pipe is not rubbing on anything on the chassis/suspension so it won't get damaged again.

POST 6Original post

Btw, look closely at the left of the pipe in your photo, obviously it was cut there as the cut was not completely perpendicular to the pipe. Also structurally there's no reason to have that 1/4" overhang there to accept a rubber hose.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Ahsai The portion of the tube that is bigger (which need a special clip) is the end that is closer to the engine or it is connected somewhere in the middle of the car (on the right hand side)? Thanks Pierre

POST 8Original post

That end with a quick connect clip (female end) is closer to the engine. It connects to a rubber hose that has the quick connect (male end), which connects to the engine coolant flange. A is the quick connect. The pipe has the female end with a clip on it. The A-B rubber hose has the male end of the quick connect. B is connected to this flange here where coolant is supplied to the radiators.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now it is pretty clear to me what happened with this hose. I know that my car was damaged in the back and this hose was cut at the Arrow on your picture right aboe the half shaft. That's where I had a small rubber hose connecting two metal hoses. Obviously changing this hose while the engine is on the bench is straightforward but in my case I was trying to fix a small leak :-( so only the half shaft have been removed. So getting a shop to solder the hose rather than buying a new one and cut it is probably much easier since I just checked and the hose need to be ordered from Germany or from US (since I'm in the foreign country north of you guys) or maybe from a recycler. Thanks a lot guys ... first time I post on Rennlist and within 12 hours the mistery has vanished. Best Regards Pierre

Makes sense and exactly what I expected (about the cutting point). Check out posts #14 and #16 here http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...-hose-diagram/ Someone used Durafix to weld a small hole on the coolant pipe using a propane torch.

I have a 996 C2 which I am parting out. The OEM cooling pipes and hoses are pristine, and available. You can write to me at porschefamily at g mail if you like.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi .. me again Guess what after fixing one side .. now the other side is leaking... due to a metal clip rubbing against the hose. This car was not properly maintained in the past causing these issues today . On this side (left - driver side) the long hose was not modified so either we drop the engine or we try to fix it in place with Durafix or something equivalent. For sure the hose need to be emptied from the front connection and we need to scrub the hose and put some heat shield around the area (multiple layer of aluminium foil or something like that). My question is: Can this be done since the hole is rather small? or even a small amount of coolant fluid inside the pipe will prevent the Durafix to bond adequately with the pipe. Next time I'll drop the engine I'll certainly fix these two hoses but right now I don't have the time. Any advise good or bad are welcome. Pierre

POST 15Original post

You can drain all the coolant quite easily if you have compressed air. Just search a thread from me with the word "simple" in its title. Let me know if you can't find it. My wild guess is once you drain all the coolant, you should be able to braze it if the hole is far from any rubber hoses that connect to this pipe.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Ahsai for the quick reply. I found your other posting. On this metallic hose the rubber connection is relatiely far if I look at the parts diagram that you refer to on your initial posting to this thread. There a rubber hose nearby that we can disconnect, the rest we will shield it... a couple of layers of thick aluminium foil should do the trick. Now I have something planned for my vacation. Will keep you posted on the result ... hope not to report that a third hose decided to break or the car burst into flame ..... which may not be a bad thing after all . Pierre

POST 17Original post

Just don't torch any fuel rubber hose and you should be fine BTW, you only need to use steps 1 & 2 to drain most of the coolant in this case. Step 3 is to drain the coolant in the heater core, which you should not care about anyway.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just a quick update. I ordered the Durafix product but it took 3 weeks to get the stuff across the border :-( sometimes you wonder how useful a trade Agreement is. We practice on the bench on a few aluminium parts then we went to the infamous hose which was not too easy to reach with a torch. In addition the hole being on the side of the hose made the job a bit harder. Took a few attempts but we ended with an OK result since it was not too obvious to grind the extra bit ... not the prettiest job but anyway car is back on the road ... thanks to everyone. Best Regards Pierre
