I had a coollant cap problem...had to fill it up with something from a gas station...had the cap replaced...my system flushed and had to pay 189 bucks....big deal!
Leading evidence: 'Replace ...my system flushed and had' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill radiator yourself every few years' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I remember the days you could drain your own coolant and fill the radiator yourself every few years.

About a year and a half ago I had to replace a water pump in our '99 Grand Cherokee with about 55k miles.

Cooling system components will remain clean and free of corrosion normally found in vehicles using conventional coolant.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I remember the days you could drain your own coolant and fill the radiator yourself every few years. What is so different about todays fluids? Is Porsche's fluid something so magical it doesn't mix with an off the shelf NAPA product for example? Who has some do's and don'ts for flushing radiators or topping off a low one. Thanks. And no, I didn't search TF. Just thinking of questions I have as I'm reading posts.
I drain 2 gallons of coolant every 2nd oil changes and replace with Peak Lifetime coolant. This is much easier than flushing and keeps the coolant at peak performnace and removes sediment and acids. I do it while the oil is draining in about 15 minutes. Every car should replace coolant at least every 4 years or so, regardless of whether it is called lifetime coolant or not.
I'm much more of a sceptic than most when told I should us a certain type of product for a certain purpose, especially when the price is 4x the norn. I have seen this antifreeze question come up several times and a year or so ago I thought I get to the bottom of it so I researched it and found some interesting answers. The expensive coolant is phosphate free and is only made by one or two companies in the world. Its composition is such that it does not have or react with metals in the Porsche motor to produce abraisive particles that will in time cause premature wear in the water pump seals resulting in early failure. Cooling system components will remain clean and free of corrosion normally found in vehicles using conventional coolant. Sorry I don't have a link but if you search the net I'm sure you will find the info. About a year and a half ago I had to replace a water pump in our '99 Grand Cherokee with about 55k miles. It was really a SOB of a job as there was no room to work around. The steering box had to be unbolted from the frame, etc. Anyway the pump seal had failed, coolant damaged the bearing and the pump became useless. I replaced the thermostat as well and found whiteish powdery corrosion in the housing and some in the old water pump. I now think this contributed to prematurly taking out the pump. As much as I hate to, I think I'll pay the price for the Porsche coolant. I belive Audi and a few others use the same stuff.
That's an easy answer...and not necessarily true. There is always room for optimization, if one has time to focus on it.
Now..thread related...
If you plan to flush it every 4 years, I would just use OEM, and not bother thinking about it
.
thanks,
Amir
why are we complaining about 40 bucks for a gallon of coollant, while puting 1000 and up dollar mods on our P's???

BUT I agree with the original poster....I think that if you have quality aftermarket products..in this case coollant, the engine doesn't know!! It just creates paranoiya for people like me...who are not car mechanics.
Some of you may not believe this and/or agree with the following statement. I recently asked a tech at a local Porsche dealership. He said that the Porsche brand coolant was no better/different than Prestone Extended Life. It is available for $11-$12 per bottle at Autozone. I know that some will not be happy unless they spend a premium on anything for their Porsche. If it makes you feel better, go for it. I'm just reporting what I was told.
The more important thing to note is NOT which is better or worse, but what types can and, more importantly, CANNOT be mixed together. Mix the wrong 2 types, and presto...........JELLO!
Bingo! That is the big problem with mixing coolant. The good stuff all works well. It's not that complicated. It's not as big an issue as the choices in motor oil. You just need compatable stuff or a complete flush.
Just pick up some of the Peak Lifetime 50/50 mix and you can use it in any car and mix with any coolants without worrying about the quality of water you add.
