Suggestion
not even sure they can calibrate maf readings (an issue on boxsters using later air boxes) change from NA to ROW (they have to start w an NA or ROW base tune) and try getting an answer as to whether fuel trims are used for open loop operation or post-cat o2 sensors are used to adjust trims (my understanding is that the bosch dme is capable of doing both, but uncertain if the porsche tune takes advantage of it).
Leading evidence: 'fueling issues at the time (due' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fueling issues at the time (due' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). I would think that if the injectors weren't up to the task of delivering enough fuel (they are new injectors after all) FSI wouldn't recommend the mod.

Havent touched a 911 with Motronic,, but isn't the biggest issue with that vintage of motronic is that its mostly a Analog system,, a lot of the operation is hard logic, not digital programmable logic, so you need a full test simulator to drive the ECU and tweak it live, Replace parts to get the correct reaction,, most of those systems even if internally they have some programmable logic, they don't have very wide ability to respond very well to changes in the engine like pipes/intake/boost/timing etc..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

808Bill, was this it?

LN engineering sells them.
I've had the ipd competition plenum and gt3 throttle body on a 3.4 996 and didn't experience noticeable gains. The intake sound was nice. I sold it after minimal use. It didn't provide good "bang for the buck".
808Bill and CDS, thanks for follow up. Idea of plenum makes sense (better air flow) but also have heard that it's not as noticeable without better air exit (i.e., headers and exhaust). Thoughts here?
I put 997.1 Tuby Style Headers on mine (996.2 3.6) and a K&N hot air intake and to be honest, I didn't expect to feel anything other than sound...It feels and sounds so much better than stock!
More air in needs more air out. I know nothing about the IPD but have read mixed reviews...
I do not know. I grew up being taught that an internal combustion engine is an air pump, and that you can get more power if you can make it breathe better. So it makes sense to me that it might be possible to increase flow on the intake and exhaust and get more power. Where that power lands in the curve is a mystery to me. That being said, I'd trust the experts on this one. These engines are well engineered and l suspect they tuned them for good all around performance and drivability. If you have $1000 that you want to spend, the ipd plenum and gt3 throttle body sound nice. If you get some extra power too, then that's a nice plus.
I agree that for roughly $1100.00 you'd be justified in expecting some noticeable gain from such an installation. I'm preparing to install the IPD "competition Plenum" along with the GT3 Throttle body on my recently built FSI 3.8l stage II. Jake Raby says that although the engine should/will adapt to the increased airflow, the ECU should really have a specific tune to maximize performance/take full advantage of the mod. Apparently, the early '99 cable throttle C2's (Motronic 5.2?) don't have the ability to modify the tune, so it's not surprising the stock 3.4 in the early C2's don't see a big gain. Once I do the install, I'll document it here or in a new thread.
Won't you need bigger injectors too?
If the tune is not spot on and A/F ratios are a little off...Boom! Make sure you choose the best when it comes to custom tuning.
The installation is super easy. A handful of wormdrive clamps, a plastic hose connector, four bolts and an electrical connection at the throttle. The trickiest part is fitting the plenum into the rubber boots that connect it to the intake, but I was dealing with cool weather temps so the rubber was less pliable.
I did it to mine and noticed a bit of a increase.
The 99 can be tuned but no one wants to do it. I've talked to quite a few tuners in the US and been told by all of them "we just don't like to mess with them"
Jake Raby will be doing the tune...based on my engine data both with and without the Plenum/Throttle body, as well as The "Tuner" (hand held tablet) is part of the package when you do a Stage II or better. The only caveat being that you must have Motronic 7.xx (i.e. E-Gas) - the cable throttle (Motronic 5.xx) is a no go (I don't know about other Tuners, but that's Jake's/FSI's position). * This is also one of the mods that FSI offers on newly built engines. The main reason I didn't have it done while it was there was due to the fueling issues at the time (due to venturi tubes - documented in my "impressions of 3.8 build" thread). This is also one of the few engine mods that FSI recommends as useful - especially on the "big bore" engines. I would think that if the injectors weren't up to the task of delivering enough fuel (they are new injectors after all) FSI wouldn't recommend the mod.
99=1 hit wonder,, most tuners want the easy way out..
Depends on how much of a given ECU has been reverse engineered to allow tuning..
The 99 may be a orphan in that respect.
Who!! Please let us know who cuz they will pick up some business. Iv called just about every reputable porsche vender in the nation including the ones advertised on this site and have received a no some have said we can but dont like to and .. basically wont. I even have a thread on here somewhere about it and no one posted a vendor that would. I have had a couple local shops offer to if i drop my car off for two weeks for a custom tune where they will drive it in all conditions and dial it in and in two weeks you will have a tuned 99 that has just had two weeks total abuse for $1200.
Seriously, if you know someone.. please share cuz there is plenty 99 owners on here who would like a tune.
Plenty of websites have it on there site that they do... call them, they will tell you ohhh ya the 99 is different, sorry cant tune it
Softronic is reputable and they offer one:
http://www.softronicsoftware.com/996...tware-1998-99/
Call Scott and ask. He's a very approachable guy and will give you the straight dope.
APR has it on there website as well. Called them and they said yes, sent me to there closest vendor to me(1hr away) got there and they said no and they called apr with me there and apr told them oops our mistake we need to update our website lol
if you have had a 99 tuned please share with the community where to get it. I dont need one anymore as i had one done and i cant with a clear conscience send anyone to the guy that did it as he is a .... anyway waste of money and im now doing an engine swap.
Dont use fab speed!!! They can do exhausts.. there tuner does not work for them and he is very unprofessional. Hes the guy who did me AND my brother wrong. Plus they dont do the 99 tune. It was a favor for me and it was a train wreck.
I've wondered this same thing.. even started reading up on tuning and trying to learn about it to get over this headache of relying on others to tune my cars and start doing it myself. I know the 98-99 CAN by tuned but why wont anyone do it or don't like to do it? Two shops by me will do it but they both want to keep your car for two weeks and abuse it. Not an option for me lol
i think it's the dme. the bosch 5.9 (?) unit they used on the early cars. not sure if it is hard to get into, or the fact that it was only around for a short time before they went to the 7.2 then 7.8 bosch dme. realise that porsche/bosch does not make any of the proprietary tuning info available; the third-party tuners have to reverse engineer the dmes to be able to tune them - they dump the data off them which is just a pile of numbers, then they try to figure out what each number means. i would suggest that even softronic, etc., don't have 100% knowledge of what is happening in there; they can tweak fuel maps, rpm limiters, timing. not even sure they can calibrate maf readings (an issue on boxsters using later air boxes) change from NA to ROW (they have to start w an NA or ROW base tune) and try getting an answer as to whether fuel trims are used for open loop operation or post-cat o2 sensors are used to adjust trims (my understanding is that the bosch dme is capable of doing both, but uncertain if the porsche tune takes advantage of it). so, tuners are not going to invest a bunch of time and money reverse-engineering what is for all intents and purposes an historic car at this point for small returns. even the 7.2 is tough to get tuned. there is open-source info for the 7.8 which is a lot easier.
i think your best (only?) solution for early cars is a piggyback - apexi or something similar. fools the stock ecu into thinking that it is getting signals (airflow, etc.) that it isn't. achieves the same results, and is probably what your local tuners would be offering which is why they would need the car for so long.
apologies for the hijack.
FYI-
We only offer tunes for cars that are fitted with our engines. That's all. We only support what we create.
That said, I never said that a -99 car with a cable driven throttle could not be tuned,
what I said was that I cared nothing about doing it.
The biggest gains we see from tunes come from mapping the throttle on the E Gas cars, so without that being done, a ton of the benefits go down the drain.
The last "well- known tuner" I spoke to couldn't recite the 4 strokes of a 4 stroke engine, and didn't even know the sequence of events of these within the engine. All too often we see "tunes" that are made b y people with zero engine building experience, and sometimes with no mechanical experience at all. This leads to issues.
whoa whoa whoa... who said anything about flat 6... not me. not sure if this reply was directed at me or not if so ... huge misunderstanding if so. the vender who did me and my brother wrong was not flat 6, I want to make sure that is clear. I'm not throwing names out there and trying to bash anyone.
Jake I have talked to you a couple times and tuning is something we have never discussed. If your reply was not directed at my posts... then ignore this response lol I just don't want to be a part of bashing anyone... I'm old enough to be done with that stuff.

there's a company in britain that does alpha-n tuning for the 996 which is, if i recall correctly, setting fueling based only on throttle position. allows you to remove the maf sensor from the airflow for less restriction. might be another option for early cars.
So, it was probably my comment that Jake/FSI responded to saying "
Apparently, the early '99 cable throttle C2's (Motronic 5.2?) don't have the ability to modify the tune"
... the text on the FSI page is actually this - "
The 1999 Porsche 996, and 1997-1999 Porsche Boxster are not currently supported with our tuning program." ... In any case, it was merely semantics as the result is the same. I didn't mean to imply that FSI couldn't do the tune - only that they don't/won't.
My car had Fabspeed Maxflo mufflers on it when I bought it. I've since added Agency Power Headers
https://www.agencypower.com/agency-p...8-p-24314.html
but my cats remain stock. **Early on when FSI was having problems with the high rpm fuel trims (going lean above 5500rpm on the Dyno) the headers were actually part of the discussion - but it turned out they weren't the problem.
