Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

When people talk about having their "IMS done" or "IMS replaced", instead of IMS, they almost always mean IMS
Leading evidence: 'Replace ", instead of ims, they almost always mean ims' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ", instead of ims, they almost always mean ims' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

They can basically call it whatever they want as long as the name promotes the product (which in this case it does) - once you read the description of the product it's clear that it only replaces the bearing and not the entire intermediate shaft...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

[nitpick]

bearing
.
That is all.
[/nitpick]
Pedantic or not it's an important distinction. The IMSB is NOT the IMS. They're both real things and they both effect the performance of the engine. In fact, rotational run-out of the IMS can/may be one of the main causes of IMSB failure. This being the case, I don't think it's over the top or nit-picky to point out the distinction when someone refers to the IMS when they're most likely talking about the bearing (IMSB)... rant over!
I think it is reasonable to assume that many people think of the bearing as the "IMS" regardless of what the part name is, especially those that don't seep themselves in the websites or other documentation. Especially new people, or people that don't have the interest in knowing all the details.
If someone knows enough to add on the word "shaft", in the rare occasion that they mean to reference that part, I assume they know the difference. If they just say IMS, and don't otherwise clarify, I assume they mean the bearing.
Besides, when someone new shows up and asks about the IMS, it isn't especially friendly to jump all over them when they are just getting acquainted with Rennlist. It's like a first time guest coming to your home and you correct their grammar or pronunciation as you greet them. Might it be factual or correct? Sure. Friendly? Not so much.
Think about this: nobody corrects LN Engineering when they name their products "IMS Retrofit" or "IMS Solution". I suppose they should call them "IMS
Bearing
Retrofit" and "IMS
Bearing
Solution".
maybe you tell Jake or Charles that, and report back how it goes. lol
^^^ Lots of assumptions there...Adding "shaft" to IMS would be redundant as the "s" already refers to the shaft. On the other hand, if a "newbie" starts making inaccurate statements/questions etc. (however innocently) it's acceptable to correct them in the name of stopping the spread of said inaccuracies. Of course, no-one has to "jump all over them", but that's clearly not what happened above (post #'s 5 & 6).

I don't think a product name - in the case of IMS Retrofit or IMS Solution, has to be technically accurate. They can basically call it whatever they want as long as the name promotes the product (which in this case it does) - once you read the description of the product it's clear that it only replaces the bearing and not the entire intermediate shaft...
Hey
@Somerset1
, I'm deducing that you're from Somerset? It looks like on the Google machine a trip to Revolution in Leeds is a bit of a jaunt from Somerset. A similar distance to Hartech in fact...
I don't want to cast any shade at all on Revolution (I'm from the USA, after all,) but Hartech is a regularly contributing member on this board and the information they provide to us is top-notch to say the least. If I lived in the UK I would certainly take my 996 to them as they seem to be masters of the M96 engine. Two pence from someone used to giving cents.
Mark, I was where you are not too long ago. Everybody here is going to know my answer. IMHO, The only IMS bearing replacement that should go into these cars is the IMS Solution that is manufactured by LN Engineering. Don't get sucked into thinking the TunerRS or EPS direct oil fed bearings are the same level of quality and durability of the LN Engineering IMS Solution. If you want to have the best bearing, then go with the plain bearing design of the IMS Solution.
