Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I opened the caps to each cell - all have water and tested "good" on a battery hydrometer.
Leading evidence: 'Test "good"' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'alternator' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check battery ground' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I tested the battery - registers 12.4 volts on a volt meter.

Suspected cause
hello my996 if you've checked the clutch out and it's connecting, then check the starter then i would suspect the alternator.

Suggestion
check the battery ground to the body and the engine to the body the engine ground is the pass side head to the frame is it clean is it tight ?

Suggestion
then check the starter the small wire on the back have someone turn the key you should have battery voltage there if you dont then you have a starting circut problem if you have switched power to the small terminal and constant power to the big terminal at the starter then you have a bad starter
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Even trying to jump start the battery didn't work.
My 996 won't start. All the electrical accessories work - the windows, door locks, radio, head lamps, etc all work but when I turn the key the engine won't turn over at all - the starter is not turning. After searching some posts on this board, I thought perhaps the cars security system was on and disabling the start so I pressed the remote key a few times - on, off, on, off - to be sure that the car was disarmed, then it started up like a champ. Unfortunately, that was the only time it started. Since that one start, the car will not start. Again the all the electrical accessories work.
Does anybody have any clue what could be wrong with my car?
Thanks in advance.
Do you hear a clicking sound when you depress the clutch? There is a switch that tells the car that the clutch is depressed -- if you don't hear the click then the car won't turn over.
This happened to me a couple of years ago (out of the blue) - '99 C4 tip. Turned out to be a faulty solenoid in one of the cylinder banks of the engine. Cost 800 to fix. My car had to be flat-bedded to the dealer.
Fairly common fault, I hear.
Make sure it is not a dying battery. It is possible for your battery to provide enough current to run the radio, etc., but not enough to turn the engine over.
x2
I had a similar experience in another car once. The battery had enough juice to fire up the guages but wouldn't spin the starter fast enough to crank the car over. Even trying to jump start the battery didn't work. Turned out one of the plates in the battery had fallen over so not enough juice was getting out the terminals. Anyways, it was fixed with a new battery.
I tested the battery - registers 12.4 volts on a volt meter. I opened the caps to each cell - all have water and tested "good" on a battery hydrometer. I tried jumping the car and still the same result - no starter turn over. I'm leaning toward the idea that the battery is in pretty good shape and not the issue.
On my wife's car, there is a big block of fuses off the battery, not the small little kind but big beefy fuses. Is there another fuse block in the car, perhaps a fuse to the starter. I'm just shooting in the dark here.
Also, perhaps the security system is still disabling the starter? Is there some way to reset it for sure? (I'm shooting in the dark again).
Thanks
make sure it isn't a fuse....this happened to me....had it towed and felt pretty stupid!!
Check all your fuses TWICE!!!!.......my P worked....except the engine didn't want to turn over!!
YES
THERES A MAXI FUSE BLOOCK ON THE PASS SIDE NEAR BEHIND THE BATTERY BUT UNDER THE DASH. BUT IT JUST DISTRIBUTES POWER TO TO FUSE BOX NEAR YOUR FOOT.
step one
check your fuses with a test light point to point
check your postive connection at the engine under the hood to the pas side lil black box is the conection tight is it clean
check the battery ground to the body and the engine to the body the engine ground is the pass side head to the frame is it clean is it tight ?
next un plug your clutch switch it is the small square switch with 2 seprate wires
connect them with a paper clip does the car start?
alternaotr only causes your car nto to start becasue the battery dies if your battery is charged and the casr doesnt start the alternator isnt the problem
then check the starter the small wire on the back have someone turn the key you should have battery voltage there if you dont then you have a starting circut problem if you have switched power to the small terminal and constant power to the big terminal at the starter then you have a bad starter
