Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm replacing the bank 1 variocam actuator and am at the point of locking the cams down to remove the valve cover. Following the guide on Pelican, I ordered the SIR Tools P253 tool but it doesn't fit. The small cam locking tool from my IMS tool kit from LN fits in the exhaust cam just fine, and camshaft timing was previously verified as good by Cantrell so it must be a tool issue. I'm located in Seatac and am hoping someone local has a good tool available.
I am probably misunderstanding, but I think the issue may be that there is a different locking tool depending upon whether you have a 3 chain or 5 chain engine (two different locking tools). With one of them, you only lock one of the camshafts. That being said, it is possible that it could be as simple as your cams are 180 degrees out of position and you need to rotate the engine to get them in the right position. The slot is slightly offset from center and the tool only fits if you are in the right position.
cds72911 - Thanks for the input. I have a '99 996 with the 5 chain engine, which is what the Pelican guide shows this tool being used on. I had the engine set with the bank 1 intake cam timing mark pointing towards the valve cover as the Bentley manual instructs. I also tried rotating another 360 as you suggested and the tool still does not fit.
The SIR tools website says this is meant for 996's up to 01

I've found other posts online of people getting a poorly made tool and having to get a new one.
The tool I got was put together wrong (I'm pretty sure there's someone else here who had the exact same problem). On the end with the two hex screws, take them out and flip it around - then give it a try.

I was able to get the tool to work. I had to file the exhaust cam side down a bit to fit inside the cam and then I had to loosen the block for the hold down bolt so it could extend. What a hunk of junk.
