When I started putting it on I couldn't get the back bolt out so I decided to leave it there and use the new roller/nut with the old bolt on the back.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I ordered replacements for my tensioning & deflection rollers a while back and I got the upper/lower rollers switched out with no problem. I started on the tensioning roller on the pulley and holy moly, it was a PAIN to get off. The weird thing is that the new looked a bit different, but all the pictures look like the one I got, not the one that's on my car so I'm pretty sure it's correct. The new one also had two metal pieces that aren't on the original and I'm not 100% sure how they fit into the picture: When I started putting it on I couldn't get the back bolt out so I decided to leave it there and use the new roller/nut with the old bolt on the back. Welp, no matter what I did I couldn't get it screwed in all the way. The roller would move back and forth slightly, which I know wasn't right. Were those metal pieces supposed to sit in there on both sides to keep it from slipping back and forth? They just don't feel solid enough for my comfort but maybe I'm overthinking it. Anyway, I got the roller back off and the GD nut had gotten flattened a bit on the end and wouldn't come out. Sigh. Pretty much useless now. So, with scraped and bruised knuckles, I just stuck the old one back on and I guess I'll have to order another. Anybody have any tips I might be missing on replacing that roller that makes the job any easier?

POST 2Original post

I'd like to see a link to what you actually ordered. This is from Pelican And looks different... A second look and it appears to be the same. Your pic has the black nut seated from behind.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I ordered from Pelican and that's what I got. Everything is the same. Just wondering what the black metal pieces are for. I'm guessing that they go on either side of the bearing with the small (bottom in the pic) side towards the bearing but I don't want to put it on that way without knowing for sure.

Yes, that looks obvious to my eye. Black bearing seal covers on either side and bolt with spacer/collar on the outside.

POST 5Original post

^^+1^^ They appear to be shields for the bearing. There is one on the tensioner of my m96 motor.

POST 6Original post

Typically referred to in parts manuals as dust guards. they usually lock to the center race and don't turn.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any suggestions/tips for getting the tensioner roller off? Getting anything behind it to get a grip while turning the front was really difficult. Also, how on earth do I get the bolt out of the back once the front is off? It's pretty close up against the engine. Just wonder if I was missing anything to make it easier.

Not sure you can replace it without removing the P/S pump mount. Getting that mount off is a bit of a pain.
