Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have installed lead bulbs on modern cars with proyector lens, and they work really well (I wont install them in a headlamp without projector lens)

I did a set of stock halogens to replace the LED aftermarket lights that were on my car when purchased.

I did this swap a few months ago to replace my tired burnt halogens.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 1999 996 with standard halogen lights. Does anyone know if you can do a direct plug in swap of litonic lights from another 996 with out rewiring?
What is the current best solution to improve the lights?
There are extra wires and ballast/transformers for the HID's. There are kits available. I can't give you a "best" solution, but there are options out there. Tough to assess "best" without actually trying them...
As compared to what? They're not as good as current offerings, but you have to remember they're 20 years old. Compared to the regular halogens available at the time, they were the shizzle!
I find the bi-xenon quite acceptable (much better than the halogen of course)
If you dont want to rewire, maybe an option would be to install xenon headlamps (they are quite expensive thought), but instead all the xenon bulb and ballast, install a kit of conversion from halogen to led. I have installed lead bulbs on modern cars with proyector lens, and they work really well (I wont install them in a headlamp without projector lens)
I upgraded my 986S with factory Techequipment Litonics after purchase of Car, dealer had them on Shelf in parts dept. For 1,000.00 at the time included in sale of new car if I installed them
If I remember, Few wires, necessitated one hole to be drilled. but other than that, 2 hour job at max , half of that was being careful.
As far as Litronics vs. Halogen. Nice step up.
LED's are nice but I haven't compared to Litronics.
If you get some used ones, makes you get all components, or the won't work.
The lamp assemblies plugged right into receptacle where Halogens were.
Retrofitting HID projectors is an option. I did a set of stock halogens to replace the LED aftermarket lights that were on my car when purchased. Currently designing an upgraded build.
Early stages of redesign
Current setup. Retrofitted HID into stock halogen housings.
Yes litronics are a direct swap for the halogens no rewiring required - unless you need the electronic self leveling function to work. I have not found myself wanting this fuctionality. I did this swap a few months ago to replace my tired burnt halogens.
