For me a clean windshield and a good set of road tunes for the boring straight stretches are good.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I am planning a road trip in my precious in September, and this winter . What should a prudent person take along for emergency road repairs, or to help limp to a safe site? I am approaching 60k mi on the car. Runs well, and service is up to date.

POST 2Original post

A quart of oil (mine eats half a quart over 2k miles or so) and good snacks for yourself? That's what we did.

POST 3Original post

Replacement engine or a new IMS(b) at the very least.

POST 4Original post

Over the last few years I've done several multi-thousand mile road trips (NJ-CO, CO-CA-CO, CO-IN-CO, CO-IL-CO, CO-ID-CO) in mine with similar mileage and condition and at my most prepared brought with me: 1 quart of oil 1 phillips 1 flathead 1 set of waterpump pliers (basically an adjustable that you can grip all kinds of stuff with and use to lever stuff if needed) 1 Visa card 1 Cell phone I have never needed any of it for repairs. You won't either. But the peace of mind is nice and it all fits in that little cubby next to the spare on the firewall. I figure if the **** really hits the fan I will log on to Rennlist from the road and see who might be nearby...It's great to have a car that is so common. :-)

POST 5Original post

in addition to good tips above, may I add: * bottled water * coolant * bug spray/wipe * flashlight or equivalent * plug and pump for tires * emergency triangle * something to use as a weapon

POST 6Original post

Tow a second 996 behind you, so when your IMS self destructs, you have a spare. Dah, doesn't everyone do this?

POST 7Original post

Porsche tool kit and spare wheel plus Triple A, that should cover everything.

POST 8Original post

Factory tool kit, quart of oil, be sure your spare is fully inflated, and have the "key" for locking lugs bolts if you have them. Beyond that, I recommend having AAA coverage with the "unlimited tow" option. A flatbed tow will cost you something like $4/mile and if you're far away from a dealer a tow can easily become a >$1000 cost. (And you don't want Billy Joe Don Bob working on yer Porsh!) I completed a road trip this spring where two other P-cars suffered punctured radiators due to road debris--having unlimited towing road service saved them a ton of cash and grief.

POST 9Original post

All great advice. For me a clean windshield and a good set of road tunes for the boring straight stretches are good. Other than that the AAA/Visa card and the tool kit and a decent tire pressure gauge. Pre-trip maintenance is the most important part to a good drive anyway.
