Didnt look at this car as an investment, and the only thing Ive had to do was recently replace a hydraulic pump in the convertible, and then have the mechanism that latches to the front window frame repaired simultaneously.

I daily mine, even though my round trip is less than 20 mi./day 4x a week right now (more during busy season), so not many miles even though it gets used 5-6 days a week.

High performance machines cant just sit around for months, get used periodically, and then put away for many more months.

When I began my search for a 911 I thought they must have defective batteries because I saw so many posts from owners talking about replacing the battery.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I love driving my 03 c4s coupe. I didnt buy it as an investment I bought it as a gift to myself, at my wifes urging. Just surpassing 6,000 miles in just under 4 months (5,000 since IMSB replacement, not the solution) as a non DD. PO drove it 8,000 miles in 12 years! I drive mostly NJ/PA and plan on getting winter tires and driving it year round (within reason). When Im not driving my car Im thinking about driving my car. 15,000 miles of recreational use wouldn't surprise me at this rate.
So far zero issues other than window regulator and funky horn. Both fixed. Added 1qt oil in 5000 miles and not a drop of liquid anywhere on my garage floor. Being a regular on this forum for past several months I see all the issues that can suddenly pop up with these cars and I keep waiting for something. In the meantime Im gonna drive the .... out of my car.
Im starting to think that driving these cars daily is best for them mechanically. High performance machines cant just sit around for months, get used periodically, and then put away for many more months. When I began my search for a 911 I thought they must have defective batteries because I saw so many posts from owners talking about replacing the battery. Turns out they just didnt drive their car enough.
If something is going to eventually happen to my 996, so be it, but Im gonna get as many miles out of my car as I can before that happens. I just cant imagine owning such a great car and barely using it.
Sorry for the rant.
Well said, I bought my first 996 almost 6 yrs ago. It’s a 99 c2 and I drove it daily year round and no major problems.
I put a little over 80K miles in 5 yrs driving it daily, it sits at 205K miles now. well I upgrade this year to a newer 996 and I haven’t really drove my old one much this year and I feel bad about that too.
so I will be doing some maintenance on it so I can let someone else enjoy the car as much as I did. But I think the daily driving really helps them out a lot.
Don’t worry about the bugs or getting stuck in the rain even a few rock chips. Drive it and enjoy it as much as you can, if something does happen to it just think of all the enjoyment you got out of it.
I've had mine for 6 months and am just approaching the $5K mark. Getting ready for my first oil change in a couple of weeks. Mine's a daily driver and I can't wait to get in it everyday. I do have a truck and another car if I want to drive them. I don't though. I had done a lot of preventative maintenance when I bought the car. IMSB, RMS, clutch, water pump, alternator, coils and plugs. No issues so far. I'm planning on stacking the miles on this car and eventually getting a FSI rebuild at some point. That will depend on what shows up in the next few years/months. As a first time Porsche owner, I am very impressed with these machines. Glad I can do a lot of work myself. Will be doing a suspension refresh, Gundo hack, and brakes/rotors within the next few months.

I wish I got to drive mine more but I don't drive much in general. I agree with your point though, nothing wrong with driving these all the time, just keep up with the maintenance, cars are made to be driven.
I agree with you. Enjoy the car. I'm OCD and used to try to preserve pretty much everything I owned. I learned to enjoy the things I have now, within reason though. I don't drive any of my nice cars when I know it will rain or snow, will be really hot/cold, or there's salt on the roads. Oh, and I rarely drive my nice cars to run errands. That's what I bought a beater car for.
Having a beater car has allowed me to keep my nice cars maintenance costs way down, and having a little time away from my nice cars renews my enjoyment. Believe it or not, it makes me enjoy my beater car more, too!
How many miles are on your car?
21,700 when I bought it mid March, just under 28k now. As for driving in the rain, there may be nothing more beautiful than the view in the rear view mirror of the vapor trail coming off the wide c4s rear tires as you fly down the freeway. Wish I could capture a photo.
I daily mine, even though my round trip is less than 20 mi./day 4x a week right now (more during busy season), so not many miles even though it gets used 5-6 days a week. It's just a car. Maintenance isn't any more than my old F10 BMW was, and this is way more fun to drive. Just under 91,000 miles here. Plan to keep it next 1.5-2 yrs I'd say. Not terribly worried about what I'll get 'back' out of it when I go to sell.
Dario Franchitti drives his F40 for this very reason, you'll never be on your deathbed wishing you drove your 911 less!
I love seeing people really putting the miles on.
Mine had ~46k on the odometer when I purchased it in April. I now am closing in on 54k.
Some Sundays, i’ll leave in the morning just to fill up and “stretch it’s legs” and then I find myself 150 miles away in the mountains somewhere near the GA/TN/NC lines and I’m texting my wife stuff like: “I dunno what happened... Of course I know that we are having dinner with Millers this evening... What appointment with the HVAC repairman?...”
Reading the 996 subforum on Rennlist can make one go crazy in anticipation for the failure that never comes..
Do the normal maintenance, change your oil regularly and mile her up. A porsche that sits is a porsche that breaks
Cheers
i constantly find myself intentionally slowing down just so i can accelerate again. can't be good for fuel efficiency but it surely raises the smile/mile efficiency. these cars are just too much fun!
Same. Getting these engines up in the rev range on the street is sometimes difficult, but it's what they're made for, so any chance to do so, it truly never does get old. I now see what all these magazine/YT/etc. testers talk about when they say the turbo'd engines lose that N/A "character" of revving so high and free.
i have yet to experience any porsche turbo, even as a passenger. it's on my "must do" list. i think i'd get in trouble if i had that much power at my command, based on how i push my c4s.
Typically drive mine once or twice a week to keep components moving and not sitting too long, sunny Friday's to work and on the weekend to the golf course.
Bought our 1999 C4 1 1/2 years ago and have put on 20 000km since then.
Lots of family road trips. Daily driven (but not winter). Been great. IMS solution goes in this winter.
I've averaged about 8,500 miles a year on my '99 Carrera 4 (a few days per week of commuting plus weekend road trips) in the six years I've owned it. Other than the preventive replacement of the IMSB, the only mechanical failures thus far have been minor (coolant tank, fuel pump starter, water pump) - failures I consider acceptable for a car older than this year's college freshmen.
I have had my 02 for three years now and love driving it. Bought it at 48000 miles for weekend driving and a few trips.
It now has 68000 and I have seen a lot beautiful sights that I would not have otherwise seen.
I put about 2500 miles on it last year, but thats what we bought it for. Its our "marina" car. To and from the marina on weekends, and the occasional dinner.
I have a really fun twisty commute to work (downhill and back up) and it's the best 12 min of my day. If someone is in front of me I'll back way off just so I can punch it to the next turn and repeat!
I daily drive mine! Rain or Snow! Put snows on in the winter and the hardtop. I use the touch-less car-wash in the winter. Used to take it skiing but I need more room for "stuff" Thats what the Subaru is for. I put 12k on a year but thats because I need the Subaru to haul stuff half the time.
I also bought a Turbo S this year. The power is amazing! But I like driving the C4 much better. LOVE the sound of the PSE! Turbo got a little water in the back seat carpet. I think from the drains being plugged. Ruined my Immobilzer under the seat $1200 part! Do it myself. Although I love the power of the Turbo its going to get me in trouble...
I have 17" rims with snows on them that I swap out! 17's run better in the snow due to higher sidewalls. Also that way I'm not as **** about them as i am with my summer 18's
Just got back from a 2800 miles road trip that included The Tail Of The Dragon. Aside from the horrible road surface of I 75 in Ga., the 2000 C2 didn’t miss a beat and got 24 mpg start to finish. Oh , and NO discernible oil consumption. Btw- engine is all original and never been opened up.
I drive mine 3-6 days per week. I thought I was doing great, until I realized that I only put 10k miles in 2 years. I am at 106k miles now. I intend to drive mine for another 60k miles before getting a Turbo. I am not watching mileage. I love driving it! I love that it is not too expensive where I am afraid to drive it. Mine actually stays dirty and is seldom cleaned. I generally on;y clean mine when I am going to PCA event or breakfast.
I think I have accumulated about 5400 miles since I bought Speedy at the end of January. A little over 100 miles to get home. Then was down for about two months while I went through a lot of things. So realistically, it's 5300 miles in about four months. Loving every minute of it...
My original plan was to keep going and do Tail of the Dragon! Plans changed but I will make the drive in the fall. I don't think I've ever gotten 24 mpg!!
Bought mine 16 months ago with 88,000 grandpa miles on it and since then Ive put 5,000 miles of spirited freeway and canyon driving. Didnt look at this car as an investment, and the only thing Ive had to do was recently replace a hydraulic pump in the convertible, and then have the mechanism that latches to the front window frame repaired simultaneously. Love having a cab in So Cal, but not loving the $2500 it has set me back. This car is my drug of choice so its worth it.
Nice cab. Like the plates too, same initials. If 88k is garage queen, what does that make mine which only had 21k. Ive now added 6300 in just over 4 months. I make sure all three digits on the digital speedo work on every drive. Drug of choice indeed!
70 miles a day right now (rain and snow). Daily driver. Never failed me (knock on wood). Had 2.5 years, put 20k miles on it roughly. Best decision I've made and best of all cars I've owned
Thanks. Garage Queen was the wrong description. Im not that active on social media, so thats my only excuse, but my 996 was garage kept, and used as a daily driver by an older retired guy who also had two Italian super cars in his garage. The 996 was well maintained, had the RMS, IMS and clutch, water pump, new leather on both seats, new carpet, and a few other known issues remedied before I bought it. The only thing I didnt prefer was the aftermarket 19 black wheels, but it had brand new Continental Contis all around, and it drove so much more smoothly and quietly than half a dozen other 996s I had tried, so I bought it.
