Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The next bank 2 I ordered came in black, same deal, I tested, double checked the part number, install and everything is ok.

I had ordered a bank 2 (gray) for a customer, it came in non-colored, I made the parts dept double check, (ok) I tested it for function (ok), installed and cured the problem.
Leading evidence: 'Test double' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check (ok) i' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The labor is just as much or more than the part, too, and you will need a few other parts to change these out on an MK1 engine.

Its funny to me that one reason the IMSB is an issue has to do with Porsche wanting to save money on die equipment for the cylinder heads, so they went to a single die head that could be used for both banks.

Im using Design 911 but still dont feel Im getting a good deal.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi ladies and gents I need some information. My 1999 996 3.4 variocam solenoid is trashed and Im about to change it. Does anyone know if the 1-3 solenoid is interchangeable with the 4-6 solenoid?
They are not interchangeable. Because the cam shafts are not the same, one adjusts one way, the other adjusts the other way. The dealer made a mistake and sold me the wrong one, once. I still have it. If it is the side you need, you can have it for half price.

Thanks guys! Saved me wasting my time and money. Just out of interest wheres the best place to buy spares? Im using Design 911 but still dont feel Im getting a good deal.
List is $500 for these solenoids. Its not uncommon for a failure, but if you do spares seems like a high probability that you will never use one or both.
The labor is just as much or more than the part, too, and you will need a few other parts to change these out on an MK1 engine.
Well, I thought that too, until I proved to my self that they are the same.Same resistance, same plug, both extend the plunger when powered, both retract the plunger when not powered. One is black, one is gray, the replacements may be non-colored.
I had ordered a bank 2 (gray) for a customer, it came in non-colored, I made the parts dept double check, (ok) I tested it for function (ok), installed and cured the problem. The next bank 2 I ordered came in black, same deal, I tested, double checked the part number, install and everything is ok.
I think the colors just help identify which bank it is, but the actuators themselves is what determines where the proper side it belongs to. They have the corresponding part numbers on them and the plungers/pistons are oriented opposite.
Always use the part number on the actuator to determine bank 1 or bank 2,
not the color of the solenoid.
Shame! Ive just bought separate solenoids. For some reason I can get the Bank 2 cheaper than Bank 1. If I had know I would have bought 2x B2s. Every days a school day!
My mistake, I had thought the question was about the "actuator" and not the "solenoid." It would not be surprising to me that the solenoid(s) are the same.
I can put my engine back in and I can sleep at night knowing Ive got the right part in the right place. Nothing worse than having to take an engine out but not finding out until its too late. Thanks for you help gents!
Its funny to me that one reason the IMSB is an issue has to do with Porsche wanting to save money on die equipment for the cylinder heads, so they went to a single die head that could be used for both banks. So it makes sense the solenoids would be the same - should be the same - but are listed with different part numbers, lol.
