I think this was my fault as I overfilled the reservoir after replacing the rusted line and bleeding the brakes.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, last weekend with my son (who was back home from Chicago - his home now) so we were out driving my newly re-powered (FSI 3.8 Stage II track performer - that's a mouthful!) car, and the brake pedal started to go soft. If you pumped it once it would get firm, but soften again for the next stop. We checked the fluid reservoir, and it was down an ounce or two. Oh boy here we go - I had just recently replaced one of the rear hard brake lines that had been leaking. We stopped at NAPA and topped it up with some DOT4, then drove the car home and parked it. Did I spring another leak in a rusted line? When I replaced the leaky one, the others though a little rusted in spots looked like they were in much better shape. I checked around the bottom of the car and near all the wheels - nothing. The fluid had to be going somewhere, so I removed the cover around the reservoir in the frunk. Fortunately, all the lines looked brand new and there wasn't brake fluid all over the place... Looking a little closer, I noticed a little wetness below the ABS Pump. Sure enough, after pumping the pedal, I could see the drip. With a mix of happiness that I found the problem so easily, and trepidation at the possible cost of a new pump, I prepared to surf the web. Sure enough, this seems to be a fairly common problem. Apparently, there's a pressure relief valve that pops. I think this was my fault as I overfilled the reservoir after replacing the rusted line and bleeding the brakes. Unfortunately, a new ABS pumps cost between $4-7k Hmmm, any used/operational ones available? Yup! To make a long story shorter - I got one from Specialized German (via Ebay - I've bought loads of stuff from them and it's always good and well priced) for $65... Yup, you read that right. It took me about 3.5 hrs. start to finish including bleeding the brakes. It's now working properly again - I'll update if anything changes.

POST 2Original post

Brakes.. Who needs brakes, we are here for going, not stopping!!! LOL Good find, and repair.

POST 3Original post

Nice job with R&R. Ive seen a few posts here about the abs pump and noticed a lot on eBay. Very odd that they are had so cheap on the second hand market given the alternative. Wish that was the case with so many other spendy parts on these cars.

POST 5Original post

the parking brake is non hydraulic, just use it!:-) Just kidding, but when we were kids my buddy and I both bought old Alfa Romeros. His had a bad brake line that we had to order from the dealer. We drove that thing with just the parking brake for a month or two. Oh to bee young (and stupid) gain.

We all did that dumb stuff, I drove a BMW for a few months that had with no reverse....always parked so I could head out, unfortunately sometimes someone would park in front, in the too small space I left...

I had to drive my 65 KarmannGhia home this way one time. I was terrified that it would fall apart after all the modulation at stop lights.

POST 8Original post

I thought you were going to part out your car and sell me your engine! Glad to hear you got it sorted out easily.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Upon figuring out I had a leak. I was amazed at how little I had to use the brakes! Brakes are for lazy mfs! 🤣
