Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I bought my e36 M3 that slid into a wall at the track but was repaired by the owner and never showed up on the Carfax.
Leading evidence: 'Repair i bought my e36 m3' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'over 100k miles and accident damage is the explanation' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean turbo' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Granted, that is still a hell of a deal for what appears to be overall very clean Turbo with a desirable color combo.

Suggestion
I see at least one dealer selling on BaT who is routinely earning 30% returns on quick flips of dealer auction cars with little/no added value (oil changes only, leaves everything else as-is.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Been watching that little guy as that auction is a bit of a conundrum. Its a 99 and the seller is a ship in Knoxville (not too far from me) and sells a lot of nice 911s. But anyone collecting the early 996 cars wants a low mileage car. I was thinking it might hit $15k, lets see what happens.
Is going to be interesting. I think the seller is going to be disapointed.
Does look to be pretty rough with the burnt & yellowed headlights, torn seats, "landsail" tires literally the cheapest tires you can get for a porsche, mismatched seats (draped leather in the rear, regular seats up front), weird carpet stains, worn steering wheel, nasty stains everywhere..... honestly I'm surprised BaT allowed this to be posted on their site.
I would be doing a hard pass on this car even at $10-12k just because if the interior is that crappy with those ****ty tires, can only imagine how much the previous owners skimped on mechanical stuff.
IMO, a lot of cosmetic problems that would add up pretty quickly and I agree with Outbound that COULD be an indicator of generally poor maintenance--certainly a lack of TLC if nothing else.
Might be a good platform for a track car, but not at that price and the the BAT fees added...
That's the worst cosmetics I've seen on any listing on BAT.
The fact it has an upgraded IMS and Fabspeed 200 Cell X-pipe tells me one of the owners at some point spent some $$$ on it. An expensive preventative maintenance item and an expensive fun upgrade says they cared about performance and keeping the car running.
Very interested if it hits $15k. I agree with most comments here, could be a great driver but looks a bit rough. 10 owners is on the high side for me.
I paid under $15k for a '99 C4 (black/black) with 78k miles and 3 prior owners just over 6 mos ago. Pretty spotless car, especially compared to this one, IMS serviced at around 50k. Granted, it was a dealer-only auction so not directly comp'd to BaT - but still...

This one seems to be much nicer than the one from earlier today, and the bidding is pretty weak still.
The comments above are accurate. Rough car bought cheap and sold for a nice $4-6K profit. And the audience raves about the great deal. Was offered from KY in cars.com in 2015 with 97,000 miles for $16,986 - so it was rough four years ago.
Dealers are doing very well on BaT because BaT buyers are naive and competitive. The costs add up quickly with the BaT fee, shipping, deferred maintenance, surprises, etc. Few good buys on BaT but it is certainly entertaining. Great place to sell, poor place to buy IMO - it's a sellers site with the buyers paying the 5% buyers fee. I see at least one dealer selling on BaT who is routinely earning 30% returns on quick flips of dealer auction cars with little/no added value (oil changes only, leaves everything else as-is. Probably checking for and removing any IMS metal in the oil). And the BaT audience loves this guy. Go figure. Naive bidders and commenters. Knowledgable car guys probably are silent. The free market at work.
It takes all participants for price discovery to be most effective. I like following the prices even though i dont intend to ever sell, which Im guessing is like most of the regulars on this forum.
Not really, I've seen several cars under $15K (that look and run well) that aren't selling. Asking price's might go up, but actual sales prices not so much.
The UK guys claim they're still dropping there.
But, Australia is ridiculous!
I think it really has to do with presentation. That's what BaT excels at, and what you see for cars that sell quick on forums here. Provide a prospective buyer with 150+ beautifully taken photos, pictures of the service records, a full comprehensive writeup of the history and what you had done with it while you owned it and can easily fetch an extra $2-3k over what is typically out there. Paying for a professional detail and paint correction before taking said photos might cost $500, but it'll easily add another grand or more to the selling price.
Post on CL with some fuzzy pictures, something like "119k, new IMS, manual, silver" and I bet you that 99 that just sold on BaT for $16k would be sitting for $13k all day long until someone offered $12.
This:
"
The rear bumper cover has reportedly been changed three times, and the drivers door and quarter panel are said to have been replaced two years ago. Accidents listing minor damage are noted on the Carfax report in May 2008 and January 2013. Cosmetic flaws include cracks on the front bumper and dings in the roof as shown in the gallery below."
This:
"The brake rotors are said to require replacement."
And this:
"The cigarette lighter is inoperable and the cupholder tray is missing pieces, though said to remain functional."
Granted, that is still a hell of a deal for what appears to be overall very clean Turbo with a desirable color combo.
That silver 99. 10 previous owners per carfax, big negative to me. Assume that a couple of those are probably dealers. But 10. A discount of $500 per prior owner and the sold price makes sense. But plenty of 2 or 3 owner 996s in this same basic spec out there for only a few dollars more. Quick fling, or long term commitment. Pick your poison, pros and cons to each option for sure. But all the prior 10 all got sick of sticking their keys in any more. Personal preference is always low number of owners, and via craigslist, pcar classifieds etc, can look the most recent owner in the eye and form an opinion on whether honest or hiding something.
I dunno about dealers but I've seen some weird stuff show up on Carfaxs because of title changes. I owned a car that had 3 owners change with no additional mileage on it. I think for dealers it comes up as something like "offered for sale" or something like that. I also take Carfax with a grain of salt. I bought my e36 M3 that slid into a wall at the track but was repaired by the owner and never showed up on the Carfax. Its a good bench mark but doesn't get everything.
I think part of BaT appeal is that its mainly enthusiasts and enthusiast cars. Couple that with the thorough write ups, pictures and relative exclusivity it makes things look better than they are sometimes.
I agree...many owners are a flag....however one of my cars that I still have and bought new in 2002, so I am the only owner, car fax shows as having 3 owners....it has to do with the fact that I moved states....just saying.
My 2004 TT has 4 owners listed when it really has only been 2.
The first owner’s company leased it for him (1) he eventually bought out a the lease (2), then moved to a different state (3), now I have it (4). All of that in 17k miles.
