Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was having some issues with Mode button on my Porsche Charge-O-Mat. I was able to fix it yesterday. Made a video along the way. Hope it will help anyone who is having this issue with any CTEK charger. https://youtu.be/5Rx_RXGKGj4

POST 2Original post

I have two of these CTEK chargers, and one had the failing mode button like Mzsaad. I used his process to get the failing unit back to a functioning state. It's not perfect, but it's 98% effective! Previously, I had to push the button probably 100-500 times before it would register a single button-push, and it was driving me crazy. Now it works almost every time I push the button! I bought some electronics cleaner at the local Autozone for $11, opened up the unit as described in the video, and sprayed the switch until it worked again. Some additional tips: 1. For me, the hardest part was getting the circuit board rotated in the housing so that I could even see the switch. It takes quite a bit of fiddling, twisting, and pulling to free it up. Fortunately, it drops back into place much, much easier! 2. After you clean the button, don't put it all back together before you test it. I did this the first time, and then grumbled when it still wasn't working (it took 3 or 4 applications before it was working effectively). Test it (carefully) before you put it back together. I used a hairdryer to ensure that the electronics cleaner had fully evaporated. And remember that you can get electrocuted once you plug it in - don't touch anything but the button! In fact, when you unplug it, give it at least 15-30 seconds before you handle it, as the capacitors can hold a charge even after the unit is unplugged. 3. I popped off the button cover so that I could try to get cleaner down into the switch (the contacts are inside the component that's soldered to the circuit board). The first time I tried cleaning it, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be spraying (and I left the button on for that application), and that's probably why there was no improvement. 4. I think I had the best results when pushing the nipple where the button attached, at the same time as I was spraying the electronic cleaner into the tiny crevice where the button depresses. Try to get into the crevice from every angle, and use a paper towel to catch all the spray outside the area. After the 3rd application I could see it was working dramatically better, and after the 4th I figured it was as good as it was going to get, probably working 90% of the time (vs. less than 1% of the time when I started). It took about an hour start to finish, and saved me from ordering another CTEK until - but more importantly, this repair means there's less e-waste in a landfill somewhere (although I usually drop all my old electronics off at a local recycling center). Thanks Mzsaad!
