You mean there are options without having to replace the head unit?

Crutchfield doesn't sell an adapter for our cars, the only option they support is a complete rip and replace of the factory amp and head unit.

I've had some direct connect cable boxes that plug directly into the back of a factory head unit in my previous cars and aside from some strangeness in navigating music using the stock controls, they were pretty nice.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A lot of the Amazon reviews vary wildly from "its perfect" to "it didn't work when it showed up" for the same device (i know they are all cheap crap, but I wanted to know which one is the least awful of the group).
So a few of my favorite radio stations over the past year have been taken off the air for various reasons. So I am now looking for a new way to listen to the music I like. I wanted to get an FM transmitter for my 996 but I wanted to know if anyone had specific suggestions. Also, if anyone has any input on the magnetic phone mount from Suncoast I'd love to hear about that as well. Thanks!
If you're serious about music, want quality, and plan on keeping the car for a while - skip the FM transmitter and look for a hidden bluetooth or direct connection solution. I had an FM transmitter wayyyyy back and it was just horrible. Drains your phon'es battery, buggy to use, and questionable audio quality. I'm sure they've gotten better - but FM is still a stone-age way to transmit audio by today's standards. I've had some direct connect cable boxes that plug directly into the back of a factory head unit in my previous cars and aside from some strangeness in navigating music using the stock controls, they were pretty nice.
Ill check out Roidmi! thanks for the suggestion
I'm definitely serious about getting music back in my car since I daily mine and the drive is not exciting by a long shot so music just helps pass the time. I'm not sure if I want to go pulling the head unit out just yet but if it comes down to it I would do it for sure.
@misterted, I'm not sure if it is true. That was what I took away from reading some of the above comments. However, I went around on some other sites and could not find anything saying how to plug your phone directly into the system.
From what I understand, if you have the original head unit you can send it to Becker for some type of hardwire hack. not sure what it gives you exactly (BT or Aux in) or how much it costs. Becker is the OEM for our head units.
The other option is a Bluetooth FM transmitter....they suck...tried many.
You would think the sound would be fantastic with fiber optic cables in 2004...way ahead of its time....no.
I never really pursued it because the engine is music for me and it's loud also. But I would like to have the bluetooth streaming option if there was a reasonable way and also to keep the car as original as possible.

I've read the hardwire hack isn't that good. For MOST there aren't many options, basically dension (have one would recommend it) or an amazon product that should work - I haven't tried if I hadn't bought the Dension already I would have:

I just had a Alpine Wireless Carplay, double din system with new amp, put in my targa. Even with the original speakers it sounds really quite good. And the ease of use is amazing.
I've been using the longate MOST converter box with an aftermarket head unit with good results. I'm not sure if there is a distributor stateside yet, I had to order mine from aliexpress. The Becker hard-wire mod is mono-only, so that ruled it out for me. As mentioned previously, the Dension is the only option I'm aware of that will let you keep the factory head unit *and* amp while giving you an aux in, but that also requires that you either have the factory cd changer already coded to your car, or in most cases requires a trip to the dealership to have them code it for you (or find a friend with a Durametric Pro).
Go to Crutchfield.com and buy one of their radios. Installing them is simple and reversible if you want to put the hideous stock radio back in. The modern BT enabled, phone integrated indash units have amazing features at amazing prices. I have a $250 Pioneer in mine and it matches the Porsche dash illumination color, sounds great, interfaces with my phone and plays Pandora, displaying the song title etc on the radio, and it handles phone calls hands free (as hands free as possible, single touch to answer or hangup, but calling takes some finger poking). The included microphone very unobtrusively clips to the sun visor, and my wife says she can clearly understand me even when I'm rolling at speed with top down! The Crutchfield installation kits keep the original Porsche connectors, so reverting to stock is a simple matter of unplugging the new radio and reinstalling the original.
The stock Porsche 996 radios are crap. The amps are OK, and the speakers are actually pretty good.
That's all well and good, unless you have a Bose MOST system, which OP has. Crutchfield doesn't sell an adapter for our cars, the only option they support is a complete rip and replace of the factory amp and head unit.
I have the CDR23 and did the following:, ref pic. Works great without replacing any of the OEM components. The phone pigtail can usually be found by removing the drivers side panel of center console. This pigtail has switched and constant positive along with the ground.
thanks everyone for the advice. I ended up just getting an FM transmitter for like $15 on amazon because it was a cheap fix to my situation while I try to figure out where to go next. I think the next step is going to have to be a total replacement of the head unit which will serve as the long term solution to the problem.
Not the greatest but I use a Motorola roadster. You can stream anything to the radio and also voice dial. Voice text etc. For the audio quality of the Bose system I feel its adequate. Plus, theres no installation. 70 bucks and done.
