Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

As background, the clutch was replaced 12 months ago, but before I owned the car.

I pulled over thinking I had run over a branch or something.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last night I had a failure resulting in "no go no mo." The car is a 99 C4. As I was slowly driving out of a parking lot, there was a series of loud thumps under the car. I pulled over thinking I had run over a branch or something. Nothing under the car. Nothing leaking. No smoking. I start it back up, try to leave, and . . . nothing. It feels totally the same - shifter notches into gear, engine runs, clutch pedal pressure unchanged. Just no movement in any gear, forward or reverse. When it thumped, I think it was in rhythm, but my speed was so slow I couldn't say whether it would have been relative to ground speed. It definitely was not related to engine rpm. As background, the clutch was replaced 12 months ago, but before I owned the car. 95k miles. It was flat-bedded to the shop, where it sits. I'm in a place with no Porsche-specific shops, and want a sense of what direction you all would investigate based on these facts. Thanks.
Sounds like something broken in an axle or the transaxle if the engine is turning fine, the clutch seems completely normal, but it's not getting any torque to the wheels to move the car.
Sounds like one of the half shafts/drive shafts has came loose, probably was not torqued to specs when clutch was replaced. Hopefully nothing is damaged, just install some new bolts, torque to specs and carry on !!
If I were an investigator I would say based on the information you shared something wasn't handled properly at the last clutch service. Count your lucky stars it wasn't the engine! First thing I would look at is the gear shift linkage under the car. These are known to pop out. If those were fine, then you'd have no other choice than to drop the transmission and examine from the fly wheel back. Just my two cents. (see YouTube video for the gear shift linkage - jump to 6:55)

Thanks for the replies. My first thought was drive shaft or U joint, but then I remembered the axles come out of the transmission. Will report back when I have some info.
The diagnosis of Porschetech3 was spot on. The thumping I heard was the ricochet of bolts flung off the half-shaft. Now fixed. That's a Merry Christmas to me.
