Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If you don't want to change it out now, then I would watch the oil filters (after oil changes) like a hawk.

My Porsche Specialist is not promoting the IMS change as he says the car had a pretty easy life so far and that IMS should be OK noting the car has reached 80k without issues and said to do it when I need to replace the clutch.

Have anyone had engine rebuilts after replacing the IMS with reputable ones?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I have purchased (from a friend who owned for 5 years) a 996.1 November 1999 Carrera 4 Manual Coupe. I bought the car with about 79.5k miles and it has just hit 80k. The car has full service history (yearly)
Since buying I have done the following:
- Service Oil + filters (just for peace of mind as last service was in April/May time and needed new filters)
- Full showroom valet with machine polish
- Interior seat refurbishment to remove some side bolster scuffs
- 2 new N rear Continental tyres
- Headlight treatment to remove some yellow-ish age related
The car is now booked to fix a few things from the PPI:
Track rod Ends
Front bump stops
New driver's door lock
New key head
Coolant sender
Coil pack inserts

My Porsche Specialist is not promoting the IMS change as he says the car had a pretty easy life so far and that IMS should be OK noting the car has reached 80k without issues and said to do it when I need to replace the clutch. His view is that I can do all remedial work IMS, RMS, water pump, etc and lose the engine to bore scoring, so might as well keep maintaining it well and I should have a good car other than invest 2-3k on a low probability issue.
What is the view around?
Have anyone had engine rebuilts after replacing the IMS with reputable ones?
Thanks all
My opinion is swapping the IMS bearing is a preventive measure, not repair. Remember, just because you have only 80K miles on this car, it's still a 20 year old car and from what I understand, "garage queens" suffer more from bearing failure than the ones that were driven more often. If you don't want to change it out now, then I would watch the oil filters (after oil changes) like a hawk. Change the oil twice a year regardless of miles. Do you know if the bearing has every been changed?
I also agree with the Indy's assessment. It's a 99 model so it has the more reliable dual-row IMS bearing from the factory. It's made it this far without issue. Cut open your oil filters, open them like an accordion, and look for metallic particles.
Original engine? Generally speaking I agree with your Indy, but there's a whole lot more to this engine than the IMS bearing. That being said, is he a M96 expert? The M96 is fairly idiosyncratic and has lots of potential modes of failure. Knowing how these potential problems present themselves can be a life/engine saver. Good luck with it!
Hi - yes he is really good - full Porsche specialist, drives a 968 CS himself
Just love the car, would love it even more if I could have full piece of mind
