Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I found two pieces of sealant on my pickup tube screen recently when I installed the deep sump kit.

Leading evidence: 'Install deep sump kit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good time' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install deep sump kit' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
Probably a good time to be replacing the actuator chain tensioner pads anyway.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Could be the seal on the VarioCam actuator piston. See my thread here:

Not good news I'm afraid if it turns out to be this. Start saving money now and keep driving it until you start getting a CEL. You won't hurt anything in the meantime, you just might not be getting ideal cam timing and maximum performance. I never even noticed anything in the performance of the car at all until the CEL came on and I started logging things with Durametric. Eventually I paid a bunch of money to turn the CEL off
Are they rubber or plastic? It is common to find bits of chain guides in the sump. The guides are palstic and two different colors. As I recall, the guide for the IMS chain is black. The IMS chain guide cannot be replaced without splitting the case. The cam chain guides are (greenish?) and can be replaced. I am color blind, but they are some sort of green or brown. I had several bits of those on my sump.
Another possibility is sealant if the sump plate was previously removed and reinstalled with too much sealant. I found two pieces of sealant on my pickup tube screen recently when I installed the deep sump kit. The sump plate only needs a very thin layer of sealant when you reinstall it. A previous owner had removed the sump plate to install an X51 baffle.
If it is a vario cam actuator o-ring, that would be unfortunate because you can't buy the o-rings separately and the actuators are quite expensive. If the bits in your sump are these o-rings, I would expect the bits to be somewhat thin and tubular. I'm not sure how you would tell them apart from spark plugs tube o-rings. I don't recall any previous posts where someone described finding bits or o-ring in their sump. I wouldn't mess with the vario cam actuators unless a Durametric readout told me the cam duration was way off. Even then, I would look at the chain guides first.
if I was a gambling man, I would bet that you have bits of cam chain guides in the filter.
Meh, it's not the end of the world, and not a reason to sell the car IMO. Yes, it's expensive to fix, but it's not a risk of catastrophic engine failure. Just a nuisance. Probably a good time to be replacing the actuator chain tensioner pads anyway. It's just a shame they didn't design the thing so that this can be replaced externally without taking the cam cover off and needing all the timing tools, etc.
^^^^ this ^^^ he is right, not the end of the world, actually I would consider it a minor event in the world of m96 problems/failures..just fix it and carry on.
