Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I purchased my 996 I received a spare key fob that has tag with a barcode and lots of alpha numerics on it. I recall the seller telling me not to discard this tag, as it might be needed to reset the anti-theft feature for my 996. Can the RL pro's help me understand the codes or point me to the posts that explain this? /X3

I just recently had new keys programmed and decided to purchase one online from Porsche. Like you, the keyfob came with the barcode and the dealership explained clearly NOT to lose that code or they could not program the new keys. Its my understanding this is just one method that Porsche has chosen to use to prevent stolen cars and the grey market for Porsche keyfobs. That barcode is needed to authenticate that keyfob with your car via the Porsche PIWIS systems. Don't lose it!

POST 3Original post

I recently looked through my owners manual folder and found two key code tags and the original window sticker. Thank you previous owner!

When I picked up my 996 I was looking through every page of all of the owners manuals, nothing. I looked again just now after seeing your post, and tucked inside the business card area, out of site, was a key code tag! Woohoo!

POST 5Original post

Its kinda weird that I never looked at my owners manual. Thats what I normally do when I buy a new car. But I had a .PDF version of the 996 owners manual, so I just left the paper version in the glove box and read the electronic version. But I removed the paper version since my 996 is headed to the body shop for the aerokit side skirt installation after they paint them this afternoon. They said they would install them for free! Woohoo! Just for S&G I looked in the leather folder and saw my key code tags and window stickers.

The numeric code at the bottom of the tag is entered in PIWIS and is used to "marry" the remote to the alarm control unit. This numeric code cannot be retrieved and is not stored anywhere in the system, it only comes with a NEW remote.
