dont' forget to check brake system, belt condition, lube all hinges (top mechanism if cab), inspect suspension & power steering for leakage and boot cracks, transmission leakage.

I thought that I had read somewhere on the board that the 30K also includes a spark plug change for the 3.4L 996's?

The 30K service is just the 15K (oil change & Pollen Filter) with the addition of changing the air filter. This is also the time that the brake fluid should be flushed. Brake fluid flush is do different from any other car.
Most people that have someone else do it pay $600-$800 for this.
If you DIY the parts (oil, filters) will set you back about $120, and you should be able to do it in about 2 hours if you take your time.

Ditto what Orient Express said. I just did the 30k on my car and it took less than 2 hours and some of that time was just waiting for the oil to completely drain. Save yourself the money.

I thought that I had read somewhere on the board that the 30K also includes a spark plug change for the 3.4L 996's? Is this true? I'm in the same boat where my 01 996 Cab is due for the 30K. I change my own oil - the air and pollen filters are a no brainer - flushing the brake fluid isn't too tough. The only thing was the sparkplugs...it looks like a bitch to do from underneath the car!

Check your maintenance handbook. for 02 and later 996's the plugs get changed at 60K. 98-01's I believe are 30K. The DIY instructions for plugs are pretty clear. It is pretty easy to change the plugs as well. I would put the back of the car up on Jack Stands, and take off the rear wheels to get better access to the sides of the engine, but besides that it is pretty straight forward.
When you have it up like this, it is also a good time to look for oil leaks.
i'm going to do my own 30k svc as well, what's the best way to preserve your warranty, save receipts? The dealer quoted me 1000$!!!!!!
I know this has been done somewhere, but can somebody post what's required for the 30k svc. TIA

Local dealer charges $650-900 depending if plugs need to be changed. if you change it on your 99-01 996, use the newer plugs so that you won't have to change it as often next time.

30k is more than just an oil change, filter change. Look at the service checklist in the DYI section. If you can't do the checks, you should ask on what exactly to look for instead of not doing it. A bent control arm or leaking shock will compromise your car's capability and can cost more expensive in the long run.
